The American Girl Mine was discovered in 1892 and produced over 20,000 tons of gold over the next few years. It was worked again in the 1930s and its changed hands over the years throughout many legal battles. Its still a working mine now, so tours unfortunately are not available. But the surrounding hills and canyons on the California-Arizona border are a site to see.

Most states have lands that are managed by the states Fish and Game Commission. These are usually called Wildlife Management Areas . Many allow you to camp. Mount Tamalpais State Park is a 6,300-acre state park in Northern California. It features the notable 2,571 foot Mount Tamalpais and fun activities like wildlife watching, picnicking, and hiking.

San Bernardino National Forest
There are only a handful of campsites for dispersed camping along with stringent norms. Wooden or charcoal fires are not permitted at the campgrounds, while the facilities are also limited. In case you camp here, you need to clean up the spot completely before winding up.

Located at Eagle Lake just outside of Susanville, California, Rocky Point West is a quiet campground with no amenities. Boating is allowed in the lake during high water periods, but it is not recommended during low water periods as the bottom is shallow.

Lassen National Forest And Lassen Volcanic National Park
The Lassen National Forest is roughly 3.5 hours north of Sacramento, CA. Within the national forest boundaries, you can prospect for minerals, ride horses, fish, hike, explore caves, and more.
Nearby, at about an hour away, is the Lassen Volcanic National Park where theres a whole bunch of other awesome spots including more lakes, sulfur vents, mud pots, and Lassen Peak .
The forest has lots of plant life and wildlife abound like black bear, coyotes, mule deer, skunks, woodpeckers.
The landscape of the forest and the volcano area around it include two major river systems as well as many lakes, cinder cones, rivers, and lava flows. If a picture is worth a thousand words, here are a few thousand.

Where Can You Camp For Free In California
California has a variety of ways to find a dispersed campsite. Usually, you can camp for free legally on BLM land , and some National Forest Service land.
We usually use apps to find free campsites in California. A few good free camping apps are The Dyrt Pro Membership, iOverlander and Free Roam. You can use these apps to make sure youre on BLM or National Forest Service land and read reviews of free California camping.
When youre trying to find a free dispersed campsite, make sure you camp where someone else has camped before. You dont want to trample undisturbed plants and stay out of meadows. Look for clear signs of tire tracks, flattened ground and a fire pit.
Make sure you research local fire restrictions before starting a campfire in a dispersed campsite you may need a campfire permit in some areas.
Please, please, pack out your trash when boondocking in California, or anywhere else, for that matter.
Finding Dispersed Camping In Southern California
This is not going to be too difficult to do or find in Southern California. If you do not know what dispersed camping entails, all the term refers to is camping outside of designated campsites. In other words, you are going to be roughing it even when you have a trailer or RV attached to your car.
The positive aspects of disperse camping are that, one, it is usually free to do, and two, you can do it usually on federal land without any issues. A third reason to do this type of camping is that you get to test your camping skills and fortitude.
The negative aspect of this style of camping is that you are basically on your own. There are no campground managers nearby to assist you if you have problems. Also, you are unprotected from many elements including wild animals and those humans who do not care to follow the law.
Also, and this can be either a good or bad aspect, you will be away from any cell phone signals. There may be weak ones but those are as bad or as good as being without a signal at all. The areas to check in Southern California would be the differentNational Parks, National Recreation Areas, and National Forests.
There are websites available that should fill you in on the rules as well as how safe these areas are. There will be fire warnings so pay special attention to those as the higher the warning the less likely you will be able to have a fire.

Keysville Special Recreation Management Area
In central California, youll find Keysville Special Recreation Management Area . It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Free camping is allowed as long as you park in the established areas.
Kern River passes through the area, and Lake Isabella is nearby, so you can go white-water rafting, fishing, and pan for gold. Swimming in the area, however, is highly discouraged. There are over seventy miles of trails for mountain biking, horseback riding, and motorized recreation use. If you need supplies, the city of Bakersfield is less than an hour away.
Alder Creek Dispersed Camping Sequoia National Forest
The dispersed camping at Alder Creek definitely falls under the category of boondocking. Located at Sequoia National Forest, the only thing you need a permit for is a campfire. If your camper van has self-contained cooking abilities, you can camp for entirely free.
Along State Highway 155, this campground is under the giant trees of the National Forest. It is one of the more out of the way spots on the list. It would fall under the roughing it category even though it does have a few restrooms.
There are no fees to use the dispersed campsites at Alder Creek. Because of this, it could be a good option for people who are living the van life who want to save on the cost of living. The frugal nature of the lifestyle is one of its main selling points.
There are very few amenities at Alder Creek. There are a couple of cement stall bathrooms right at the campground entrance, but that is about it. Other than that, you are only left with the Sequoia National Forests splendor to surround you and keep you company.
The area is usually under fairly heavy fire restrictions. This factor makes it a good option for van campers who want to enjoy the National Forests hiking and trails but dont need a campfire. Safety in the outdoors is the number one priority, no matter what kind of camping you are doing.

Utica And Union Reservoirs
Region: Tahoe and Northern Sierra
Scenic rating: 10/10
These twin reservoirs are set in Sierra granite at 6,850 feet. Union is a beautiful and quiet lake that is kept that way with rules that mandate a 5-mph speed limit. Utica does not allow motors of any kind. Most of the campsites provide lakeside views. Fishing is often goodtrolling for kokanee salmonbut you need a boat. The setting is great, especially for canoes or other small boats. This area was once a secret, but alas the secret is out and there are now three new, small campgrounds around the waters edge. Remember to bring pack water in with you, as there is no potable water onsite. Leashed pets are allowed.
Camping In California: Los Alamos Campground Pyramid Lake
The close proximity of Los Alamos Campground to the city of Los Angeles makes this a popular weekend escape for city dwellers. There are 90 individual family campsites dotted around the hillside above Pyramid Lake as well as three group campsites that can accommodate up to 30 people. Although there is no electrical hook-up for your RV, the campground does offer the usual picnic tables and grills as well as clean toilets and running water. Pyramid Lake is exceptionally good for fishing and a fish-cleaning area is provided. You can enjoy birdwatching, rent a boat , go kayaking or jet-skiing, or go for a hike or cycle along various trials.
