Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area and CampgroundsLocated in the Appalachian district of the Pisgah National Forest is this campground that borders the South Toe River. North Section Of Pisgah National Forest Free Camping
In the Big Ivy area Coleman Boundary, there is free primitive camping off of FS 74. This narrow dirt road is not suited for pull campers or bigger. There are several roadside camp spots.
Neals Creek rd FS 2074 has great riverside primitive camping. This road is right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, making it easy and beautiful to get to.
Curtis Creek North dispersed camping is on Curtis Creek rd FS 482. This road is between Old Fort and Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a paved part of the way but gravel the rest. There are dispersed camping sites all along the road, but you can also find a small, very cheap campground located on this road. Some of the dispersed spots are close to the campground so that you can use the bathrooms at the campground.

Always pack out what you pack in. Leave the site better than how you found it. Please bury bathroom waste and also toilet paper. We all enjoy these locations for their natural beauty and hate to get to a trashy site. Rangers have in the past closed roadside camping for all due to people trashing the area.

Panthertown Valley Nantahala National Forest
Great place for stargazing + backpacking. Known as the Yosemite of the East, Panthertown Valley is located in a remote area of Nantahala National Forest. Its located just minutes from Downtown Asheville and right on the French Broad River and the river greenway.
The campground can accommodate tent campers and has sites with full hookups for RVs. There are also full bathroom and shower facilities.
Wilsons is more of a great place to stay in town than a deep dive into the wilderness around Asheville. But it is close to I-40, I-240, and I-26 for exploring further afield.
Carrier Park is only a quarter-mile away, and it has walking/biking paths, sports fields, and picnic shelters.
How Many Campgrounds Are Along The Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway has eight campgrounds that are open seasonally for tent campers and RVers. The specific opening and closing dates are listed annually on the National Park Services website. All of the parkways campgrounds offer restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables and grills, but they do not have full hookups and only two of them have showers. Cape Hatteras National Seashore
While we usually stay in a beach house during our familys annual trip to the Outer Banks, we have camped at the OBX several times and the experience is unparalleledcamping on a barrier island gives you a special look and connection to the beauty and nature of the seashore.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four established campgrounds within the park that are managed by the National Park Service spanning from Nags Head to Ocracoke Island:
- Oregon Inlet Campground is located in Nags Head. It has 107 campsites and is open all year round.
- Cape Point Campground is located in Buxton . It has 202 sites and is open from April through November.
- Frisco Campground is located in Frisco. It has 127 sites and is open from April through November.
- Ocracoke Campground is located on Ocracoke Island, which is only accessible by a vehicle ferry that leaves from Hatteras Island or Cedar Island. It has 136 sites and is open all year round.
All of the campgrounds have tent, trailer and RV sites and can take reservations in advance. Cost per night ranges from $20-$30 dollars depending on the campground. While the campgrounds are not located on the beach, all are a short walk to the Atlantic Ocean.
