The Shadow Mountain dispersed camping area is a popular option for those looking for free, dispersed camping near Jackson and Grand Teton National Park. Located just east of Moose, WY and the Tetons, this is a designated dispersed camping area in Bridger-Teton National Forest. There are approximately 45 designated sites here, with many of them clustered at the bottom of the hill.
You must camp in a designated site at Shadow Mountain and the rangers do enforce this. It is highly recommended to camp lower down if you are in any type of RV or pulling a trailer as the road to the further back campsites get quite rough.
As you might expect, this area is extremely popular for dispersed camping during the summer months so youll need to get there early to secure a site. There is a 5-day camping limit at Shadow Mountain from May 1st through Labor Day as well.
Hiking Trails In Bridger
With 1.4 million acres of land to explore in Bridger-Teton National Forest a hiker can explore till their hearts content. For those hikers that like to stay on the trail the forest has many established trails, below we have listed the most popular.
Ski Lake Trail
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 5.0 mi
Ski Lake Trail is a 5 mile in and back hike terminating at Ski Lake. The hike to the lake is an ascension of about 1100 feet making this hike easier on the way down and moderately challenging on the way back. The hike is through meadows and aspen forests giving hikers plenty of opportunity for wildlife viewing. Swimming at Ski Lake is a popular activity. Keep in mind the lake will be refreshingly cold in even the summer months. Expect this hike to take about two and a half hours to reach the lake.
Cache Creek and Hagens Trail Loop

Distance: 1.9 mi
The Hagens Loop Trail is an easy 1.9 mile loop perfect for families and trail runners. This popular trail is nearly flat with seasonal wildflowers and plenty of shade along the trail. The trails midway point gives hikers the chance to cool off on the banks of Cache Creek. This trail is well adapted for novice hikers and children, most can complete this hike in under an hour.

The road in is Gravel and About 4 miles from a paved road. Spread Creek Meadows is open May to November. There are 6-15 campsites at this location and the maximum RV length is unlimited. You may stay 16 days at Spread Creek Meadows.

Stayed here beginning July 1st on a cross-country trip from PA and we loved it! I believe it was Site #5 on the right side of the loop once you get back there. Road was fine to travel in my 2wd vehicle. Super close and accessible to everything that youd want to do at the Tetons. Litter wasnt too bad, the sites are roomy if people give you some breathing space. We had someone park at our site overnight while we were sleeping and then leave the next morning. Its always a bad idea to be looking for your free camping spot later than 4:00pm, in my opinion. So get here early.

Grand Teton National Park Free Campsites 5 Miles: Jackson Hole Grand Teton Natl Park

The road in is Gravel and a couple miles from a paved road. Jackson Hole Grand Teton Natl Park is open Access midJune to MidSept only due to snow/mud. There are 6-15 campsites at this location.
Turn east off US 89 and drive up the Forest Svc Rd. 30310. Shortly after leaving the Park there are a couple of nice sites off to the left suitable for big outfits, but their access may be muddy. If you like continue Rd 30310 a quarter mile and bearing left on to Forest Rd 3340, up the hill and a couple of hairpin turns. DO NOT TAKE THE FIRST user made road on the left as there is a large rock midway in. Continue a short distance to the second user made road on your left, which will take you under a power line out onto an overlook, which in mind has no equal â anywhere! It will take your breath away!

The road in is Dirt and 1.5 miles from a paved road. You may stay 5 days at Shadow Mountain.
Could be one of the most fantastic views! Shadow Mountain lies along the eastern border of Grand Teton Natâl Park. Off Highway 26/89 just north of the Park Visitor Center and Blacktail Butte turn east on Antelope Flats Rd. At the stop sign turn north to Shadow Mt. The road becomes gravel/dirt â DO NOT travel this road in the spring or in very wet times.

Where Is The Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area Located

This fabulous region can be found in the west of Wyoming, not far from the states border with Idaho. Its exact location is in the Bridger-Teton forest, which itself is just to the east of the National Park.
Situated in Wyomings Teton County, Spread Creek is actually a collection of small brooks that run through this region. These small streams originate from the Snake River, which is located to the west of the area, right next to the famous Jackson Lake.
Before turning into the North Fork Spread Creek , Spread Creek stretches for thousands of miles throughout the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Although dispersed camping isnt allowed in the national park itself, the surrounding national forests are home to some of the most scenic free dispersed campsites in the country.
Unfortunately, the best campsites fill up extremely quickly, especially during the summer. Its wise to arrive as early as possible, give yourself plenty of time to explore, and have a list of backup camping locations just in case your top picks are already full.
Boondocking in RVs and trailers is possible here . Finding an empty campsite is much, much easier in a passenger vehicle as rough roads tend to somewhat thin out the crowds.

Always follow the Leave No Trace principles when dispersed camping here. Pack out all your trash, properly dispose of human waste , respect campfire bans, and stay out of closed-off areas.
Unlike most national forests, dispersed camping in the Jackson and Moran areas of Bridger-Teton National Forest is limited to 5 nights at a time from May 1st through Labor Day.

Camping in undeveloped areas of the Forest is free but offers no services and no facilities . Some pre-planning is needed so that you are prepared to care for yourself and the land. Camp only at marked designated sites. Motor vehicles are allowed only on designated roads and campsite spurs.
Be prepared for rough roads in some places. All food, garbage, and attractants must be stored in a hard-sided vehicle. Use existing campfire rings, bring plenty of water both for yourself and to ensure campfires are completely extinguished at night and when you leave camp. Bring a trowel to bury human waste. Do not burn garbage in your fire all cans, bottles, and trash must be packed out. The maximum stay limit at undeveloped campsites is 5 days between May 1 and Labor Day. Have stayed here a few times, most recently the week before the 4th of July. The campsites are very large and decently easy to access, the road is unpaved/dirt most of the way but not rough at all- I was able to drive it in a Honda Fit without concern. Theres no service at any of the sites, but there is a few miles up the road. There are bear boxes at every site and no fire rings but it was easy to gather rocks and make my own ring. The creek was gorgeous, and the site is located right within the park so very convenient- probably 20-30 minutes from Jackson Lake Lodge. I went at 9am and had my choice of almost any site.

Costs And Camping For The Grand Teton National Park
The Grand Teton National park charges a 7-day entrance permit. For a private vehicle, you pay $35 for 7days, private non-commercial vehicle. If you visit with your motorcycle, you pay $30 for 7 days per motorcycle. A hiker/biker pays $20 for 7 days per hiker/biker. Children below 16 years enter for free.
If you visit the park with a commercial vehicle, the charges are based on the seating capacity of your vehicle. For a seating capacity of 1-6, the charges are an extra $15 per person, 7-15 is $125 and 16-25 is$200 while for 26+ the charges are $300.
