Camping In November In Pa

Ricketts Glen State Park

Winter Camping and Finding a Plane Crash

Pound for pound, Ricketts Glen is the king because it has something for everyone a lake for fishing, a beach with an ice cream stand, cabins for rent, tent and RV sites right on the water, and one of the most scenic trails in the state. Its in Benton, spreads through Columbia, Luzerne, and Sullivan Counties, and is about a 2½-hour drive from Philadelphia. The falls trail takes you past 21 waterfalls and will fulfill all your Instagram selfie fantasies. But please be careful. Its slippery.

If you want to rent a cabin at Ricketts Glen, its probably too late. Theyre always in high demand in any park, and Ricketts Glen gets crowded. The only thing Ricketts isnt perfect for is quiet seclusion, but its still my go-to for everything.

Hickory Run State Park

  • Explore a 20,000-year-old boulder field

Hickory Run State Park is an exceptional location to explore, especially by compass or GPS.

A unique feature found in this park is its 20,000-year-old boulder field, which is designated as a National Natural Landmark. Take your own GPS tour to this natural history site leftover from the last ice age. The park provides coordinates to follow and learn about the ancient landscape along the way.

The park also contains over 40 miles of hiking trails, once old roads leading to nearby towns back in the 1800s. These trails range anywhere from easy to highly difficult for hikers, so be prepared.

There is also Sand Spring Lake to enjoy. Sit on its sandy beach before and after a cooling swim. Float on a raft for a relaxing afternoon. Youll find shaded picnic tables here as well.

For campers, Hickory Run has over 300 tent and trailer campsites. Beware, however, of the active bear population in the area and be sure to hang your food up. If you are feeling somewhat less adventurous, try staying in one of the parks five cottages.

Bald Eagle State Forest

Not to be confused with the nearby Bald Eagle State Park, the Bald Eagle State Forest, named for the famous Native American Chief, is one of the best sports public camping in PA open year-round. The park offers primitive backcountry camping, group camping and 45 car camping spots with fire rings and picnic tables. Car camping spots can be reserved up to 90 days in advance by requesting a permit from the Bald Eagle State Forest district office.

Group campsites require a letter of authorization from the District Forester, which take between 2-3 weeks to process. Primitive backcountry campsites do not require a permit as long as the camper stays only one night in each campsite. If youd like to have a campfire at a backcountry campsite during the spring wildfire season, a permit is required.

When not spending time at the campsite, there are a variety of things to do on the 193,000 acres of forest. Hikers will enjoy the rugged and demanding 189-mile Mid State Trail. Mountain bikers are not allowed on the Mid State Trail, but are allowed on nearly every other trail in the state forest.

The forest also has one designated ATV trail, and two designated motorcycle trails. Hunting, fishing and horse riding opportunities also abound in the foresttheres even a few equestrian campgrounds spread across the forest if youre looking to make your next ride into a camping trip.

Its The Perfect Time For Cold

Thousand Trails Circle M RV & Camping Resort, PA

Temperatures are dropping across the state making it easier to want to stay inside, or maybe it makes you want to get outside even more? Depends on the type of person you are, but if you are willing to brave a little cold weather, you can still have a great time outdoors during the winter months in the Pennsylvania Wilds!

Over the last few years, I have been making it a point to find more to do outside despite the cold weather, and attempt to break free from cabin fever. You can find adventure by going camping this winter.

I would divide winter camping into two categories.
