Welcome To Poncha Springs

Poncha Springs is strategically located at the crossroads of U.S. Highways 50 and 285 near the southern end of Chaffee County. From Poncha Springs, you can drive west on U.S. 50 into the mountains and Monarch Ski Area and on to the Continental Divide, only 17 miles away. Or, you can drive north on U.S. 285 to Buena Vista, east on U.S. 50 to Salida, or south on U.S. 285 to Poncha Pass and all points south.

Camping By Marshall Pass Near Poncha Springs

Five miles south of Poncha Springs on Highway 285 leads you to Mears Junction and a chance to fork off before into the San Isabel National Forest at Marshall Pass Road. This route leads you over for a scenic backcountry drive over the continental divide to Sargents east of Gunnison. There are a slew of outdoor recreation and primitive camping opportunities. OHaver Lake Campground is the closest to Poncha Springs, located only 2 miles down Marshall Pass Road, then 2 miles north.

Salidas large historic district is nestled along the banks of the Arkansas River. The eastbound river begins to the north in Leadville, flowing south paste Buena Vista to Salida, and then east onto Canon City and the great plains. The banks along the river are rich with campgrounds, with a slew of them east of town toward Howard. Theres also a few in town and another one not far north of town on Highway 285.

Angel Of Shavano Campground

Area Status:

This campground is ideally suited for tent camping. The campsites are wooded with aspen and spruce trees along the north fork of the south Arkansas River.

Dispersed camping spots may be found along 4×4 road between Angel of Shavano and North Fork campgrounds.

Reservations: First-come, first-served. No reservations are accepted. Prior to Memorial Day weekend and after Labor Day hosts and water may not be available.
Fees: $22 per site for overnight camping. Two vehicles or one RV per site is included in the camping fee. $8.00 for a third vehicle. $8.00 fee for day use if not camping overnight. Fees are payable by cash, check or money order. Self-servicing fee tube is available. Sites must be occupied the first night of payment. Interagency Senior/Access passes valid for 50% discount to the camping fee for one site.

Camping By Monarch Pass Near Poncha Springs

Located at the junction of Hwy 50 and 285, heading east and west, and north and south, respectively, Poncha Springs is a town at a convenient crossroads. While theres no walkable downtown, there are ample restaurants, lodging and campsites to serve travelers. Plus Salida is only 5 miles east. Heading west from Poncha Springs on Hwy 50 quickly begins to ascend Monarch Pass. There are a couple of campgrounds directly off the highway, as well as one tucked away in the woods north of Maysville.

Camping Near Salida Poncha Springs And Monarch Around The Arkansas River

Salida is one of the most popular mountain towns in Colorado, thanks to its scenic location on the Arkansas River and proximity to the front range. At nearly three hours drive from Denver, its quite manageable, but yet far enough to keep out the hoards of day trippers.
