Camping World Founder Dies In Accident At His Home

Kentucky entrepreneur founded company in 1966, also owned raceway

David Garvin, the founder of Camping World, died Saturday at his home after an accidental fall, according to a report in the Bowling Green Daily News.

Warren County deputies responded to a call to his Bowling Green home after Garvin slipped while working on his roof. The 71-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities considered the death accidental.

At the age of 23 in 1966, Garvin started a small store and mail-order business that sold camping products and supplies. He grew the mailing list to nearly 7 million names and eventually opened 100 stores with 5,000 employees.

Garvin and his family also owned the Beech Bend Park and Raceway, hosting carnival rides as well as motorcycle and auto races.

My wife and i bought a 115,000 dollar used holiday rambler from camping world in myrtle beach south carolina it was not the highest priced unit on the lot but for us it was. the sales person matt was good the rest of the staff sucked.they changed the oil and did not tighten the filter and i lost seven quarts of oil from myrtle beach to circleville,ohio i wonder who was going to pay for a cummings diesel engine if would have blown up. i call the myrtle beach store they could less. in the future i hope to drive on by there stores but i bought number of there so call service agreements hope there not worthless.dont how you get the size they are treating this way.

The customer service team at Camping Worlds solution to poor operating locations is to bribe you with a $200 gift card. They dont want to acknowledge that they have issues to address with over promising and under delivering on service. We bought a 16 Coleman RV. We knew nothing except tent camping. Jim Graham of Camping World in Katy ,Texas was a life-saver. He was patient and not condescending. We are 2 older women, and scared, but he was a God-send. He even called the day after we got it because we went straight to a campground . When he found out we couldnt get it level, turn hot water on, or even get jacks down, that day, he came out and fixed everything and showed us how to do it. He never made us feel bad . We even consider him a FRIEND now. Thank you Camping World. We stayed 4 days and are ready to go again. If it wasnt for Jim Graham, it would not have been such a great experience.

Camping World Holdings Inc. will continue to stick close to its roots, according to a report by the Bowling Green Daily News.

Founded in Bowling Green, Ky., in 1966 by Beech Bend Park owner David Garvin, Camping World has grown into a $5 billion-a-year public company that includes Good Sam Enterprises and Gander Outdoors. Its reach now extends to more than 150 retail locations across 36 states, and Chairman and CEO Marcus Lemonis oversees the company from offices in his Chicago suburb, Lincolnshire, Ill.

But Lemonis, an entrepreneur and star of the CNBC television series The Profit, said in announcing the companys new chief operating officer last month that Camping World isnt pulling up its stakes in Bowling Green.

Tamara Ward, who has been with Camping Worlds Bowling Green corporate office since graduating from Western Kentucky University in 1989, was promoted to COO in a move that Lemonis said is a sign of the companys commitment to southcentral Kentucky.

Bowling Green is one of our companys headquarters, said Lemonis, who mentioned Lincolnshire and Denver as other areas where the corporation has an administrative presence. We recognize Bowling Green as an integral part of the company.

He said Ward is the ideal pick to lead the Bowling Green operation based on Three Springs Road.

This decision was not difficult, Lemonis said Monday. Tamara and I have worked together for 15 years, and she has demonstrated her competence.
