Camping World Coming To Fort Pierce
FORT PIERCE — The City Commission unanimously approved zoning and future land-use changes and a conditional use permit June 4 to enable Camping World to build an 80,000 square feet retail and repair facility on South Jenkins Road near Samuel Gaines Academy.
Camping World had cobbled together five parcels totaling 45 acres for the project, and City Planner Brandon Creagan recommended the Commission approve the request to change both the underlying Planned Unit Development zoning and Low Density Residential Future Land Use to General Commercial, along with the conditional use for vehicle repair.
The Planning Board at their May 8 meeting voted 7-0 to recommend approval of the proposal as requested, he said. The requested application for Zoning Atlas Amendment meets the criteria of the city and the Comprehensive Code and does not adversely affect the public health, safety. convenience and general welfare.
Port St. Lucie-based land planner Brad Curry represented Camping World during both the quasi-judicial and legislative hearings, admitting this was the companys second attempt to build a facility in St. Lucie County.
Mr. Creagan admitted he had received both support and opposition to the project from nearby property owners in the rapidly growing Jenkins Road corridor.
A nearby Jenkins Road resident, Betty Froebel, expressed the opposite viewpoint, worrying about the strain the additional traffic would put on the two-lane road.
