Dispersed Camping Near Montrose Co

What We Look For In A Free Campsite

Dispersed Camping Colorado

There are certain must haves and nice to haves when were scouting out campsites.

  • Cell service: In case I havent mentioned it enough, connectivity is crucial since we work from the road. When we scout out campsites in our tow vehicle, we bring our Verizon Jetpack and antenna with us and run speed tests to see if the service will be good enough for work. If its not we move on. There is a free app called Speed Test that you can download to run the same tests we do!
  • Privacy: Katelyn is a self-proclaimed introvert the further away from people the better for her and given the current state of Covid-19, we try to find secluded spots. This often takes a bit more time and effort, but the payoff is always worth it for us. We dont have to worry about other barking dogs or bothering anyone else if we need to run our generator.
  • Views: This is always a bonus and something we usually seek out, afterall with a home on wheels, having epic scenery out your window is what its all about! Again, this takes a little more time and effort. But if we know were staying somewhere for at least 3+ nights, then its worth it for us to spend the time finding an ideal location.
  • Slumgullion Earth And Sky Center

The next best camping spot that you can find near Ouray is Slumgullion Earth and Sky Discovery Center. This place has some great camping spots in its area. This aspen and tidy tent campground is ensured as a result of its extraordinary geologic and ecologic highlights.

All things considered, veer left on the 2-track street past the impasse sign before you enter the RV Park. The objective is straight ahead. This campsite fills in as the headquarters for the Lake Fork Valley Conservancy LFVC) to run programs both on location and off-site. Program subjects incorporate stargazing, geography, environment, and more stuff in case you are into that kind of interest.

    Our Experience Camping Near Montrose

From the BLM office, we followed Main Street through town as it transitioned to the 90. It then zigzagged through the countryside past farms, cows, horses, sheep and even llamas! After about 20 miles, we reached the BLM sign. Here the road transitions to dirt as it climbs steeply and rounds some curves before mellowing out again. On this section, we passed an Extreme Rock Crawling area. Sounds like a lot of fun with the right toys!

Once the road reaches the top of the plateau, there are already numerous dispersed camp spots to choose from. These first few spots see the most traffic and were almost always occupied. It seems that they would have a nice view of the town in the valley below. Cell service is probably pretty strong there as well. We decided to continue on and check out our other options.

The conditions of the dirt road were surprisingly well maintained. After being there awhile, we noticed that there was a decent amount of through traffic including constant hauling of lumber trucks. Which is probably why the roads are given so much attention.

After a couple miles, we found a nice turn off with nice views of the mountain tops across the way. And we had good cell signal. So we set up and called this spot home for a few nights. During the next few days, we spent a lot of time getting everything set up for replacing our roof ordering supplies, figuring out where to have stuff shipped and getting tools/supplies in town.

Black Canyon Camping: The Best Campgrounds and Dispersed ...

Since weve been doing so much free camping, weve unfortunately seen the aftermath of people who dont respect the land and follow common courtesy. The biggest rule of free camping should be a no-brainer, but sadly that isnt the case.

  • ALWAYS pack out your trash, dumping is NEVER ok. Weve seen mattresses , old camping chairs, bottles, plywood boards, cans, diapers. You name it dont be those people. It will ruin it for everyone. And if you can, leave the campsite better than you found it. We practice the philosophy of Leave No Trace, to learn more click here.
  • Most BLM camping or Forest Roads have a 14 day limit, which is incredible! This is usually posted at the entrance area.
  • And lastly, remember to be respectful of neighbors if you have them. No one likes listening to others loud music, yelling, generators or barking dogs.
