    Why Is Doheny Campground Closed

The popular campgrounds, one of the most in-demand in the California State Parks system, will be off limits for six months, a closure put in place so a sewer system can be repaired. The project to replace and reline about 6,500 feet of sewers was approved a year ago by the California Coastal Commission.

California Beach Tent Camping at Doheny State Beach Campground Review

The one drawback to Doheny State Beach campground is the noise. The camp hosts do a good job of walking the park to keep noisy guests from disturbing others, but there are a few other items you cant control. The campsite has a large majority of trailer and RV campers, so there is a good amount of generator noise from 10am to 8pm.

My other big issue with the noise is the close proximity you are to your neighbors. This might be more of an issue for tent campers that do not have trailer or rv walls to keep out the noise. Other minor noise issues, is the train will come by in the middle of the night and startle you from your deep slumber or you can hear quite a bit of road noise from PCH and the freeway. Even though you will not have the quietness of a high Sierra meadow, the close proximity to the beach definitely makes up for it.

Facilities & Cleanliness At The Campsite

Warm showers and clean bathrooms, always a plus. Doheny State Beach is great for tent campers or RV who need extra facilities. Our Chalet A-Frame trailer doesnt have a bathroom or a shower, which makes a long stay in it somewhat tough. Doheny State Beach has more than enough clean flushing toilets for midnight bathroom runs and the campsite has coin operated showers. The showers are $.50 for two minutes and the water is instantly hot. After a long day of surfing or playing Bauchi ball, the showers at Doheny State Beach are a little slice of heaven. For guest that have disabilities, bathrooms and showers are handicap accessible.

The Best Time To Make Campground Reservations

This is the tricky part. For those in-demand spots, reservations open six months ahead of time, at exactly 8 a.m. Pacific time. For example, on August 3, you can reserve campsites for dates beginning on February 3 and lasting as many consecutive days as the park allows.

That is unless it’s a short month. In that case, multiple dates become available on the first of the following month. On February 28, you can reserve through August 28, and August 29-31 become available on March 1.

The state park reservation website brags about changes to a “rolling” reservation window that replaced the old system of releasing an entire month at a time, but in reality, it makes little difference. You still have to reserve six months ahead, set your alarm and mark your calendar to make them on the date you want.

    California State Park Campground Reservations

You may be able to find an open spot in a California KOA on short notice. You might even drive into a National Forest campground on Friday afternoon and find a place to put your tent.

Thats not true for many California state parks. In fact, most campsites must be reserved as much as six months in advance, especially during the busy summer camping season.

Key Doheny State Beach Campground Regulations Dogs must be kept on leash and attended at all times. Dogs are not permitted on the beach. At night dogs must be confined to tent or vehicle. Quiet Hours are from 10 PM to 6 AM. Generators may only be operated between 10 AM to 8 PM.

    Reservations For Rv Camping

California is home to some of the country’s most scenic RV camping destinations. There are many opportunities to park your RV for free and camp on public land administered by the BLM and the USFS . A few parks that offer free RV camping include Borrego Springs, Mammoth Lakes, and Ukiah. These locations do not offer RV hookups.

Other RV camping opportunities are available at designated camping sites such as Yucaipa Regional Park, Mojave Narrows Regional Park, and Joshua Tree National Park. These designated spots all provide full RV hookups, and many include showers and options for fishing, swimming, and use of ATV vehicles. Make sure to research the park of your choice beforehand to see what will be available to you.

Reserve California is the best resource for finding lodging accommodations for your RV, although similarly to the process for other activities, reserving a spot requires patience, preparation, and some luck.
