Solitude Its Beach Camping At A Developed Campsite

Doheny State Beach Campground would we stay here again?

The one drawback to Doheny State Beach campground is the noise. The camp hosts do a good job of walking the park to keep noisy guests from disturbing others, but there are a few other items you cant control. The campsite has a large majority of trailer and RV campers, so there is a good amount of generator noise from 10am to 8pm.

My other big issue with the noise is the close proximity you are to your neighbors. This might be more of an issue for tent campers that do not have trailer or rv walls to keep out the noise. Other minor noise issues, is the train will come by in the middle of the night and startle you from your deep slumber or you can hear quite a bit of road noise from PCH and the freeway. Even though you will not have the quietness of a high Sierra meadow, the close proximity to the beach definitely makes up for it.

Doheny State Beach Camping & Day Use

    06/23/2021 by DayTrippen

Doheny State Beach is located in South Orange County next to Dana Point Harbor. Doheny was Californias first state beach, thanks to Edward Doheny, who donated 41 acres of oceanfront property to 1931.

Up until the Dana Point Harbor was built in 1971, Doheny Beach was a popular surfing beach. Dana Point was also once home to a unique wave known as the Killer Dana. The break got this name because it came out of deep water and broke on the rocks which lined the beach.

Today the waves are tame, blocked by the Dana Point Harbor rock jetty. One advantage of being located next to the breakwater is Dohenys gentle surf. Smaller waves make this an ideal place to learn surfing.

The northern section of the beach is day use and has a wide sandy beach plus a large grassy area perfect for picnics. You can rent bikes at the concession stand and travel all the way to San Clemente along the bike trail.

    San Clemente State Beach

    Showers
    Tents & RVs

The San Clemente State beach is favorite for people who are wanting to camp in San Clemente. Its designed for tents, RVs, and trailers, so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy this campsite. The campsites are divided nicely, allowing you enough privacy from your neighbours.

The campsites have great access to sun, so you wont be cold sitting in the shade. Though there are no beachfront campsites, theres a lovely trail which takes you right to the beach. Once there, on the north side, you can take a walk to the San Clemente Pier.

If youre wanting to head into town, its a short drive and youre connected to restaurants, shops and activities. Overall, though its not beachfront, the location is amazing for those who still want to be connected to regular amenities.

    Showers
    Tents & RVs

Another campsite not far from San Clemente is San Mateo. Its located 2 miles inland from the beach, so, if youre not opposed from not being right on the beach, then this campsite is great. Youre placed a little more in nature, however, you can still access the beach by foot or car.

If you have children, youll probably have to drive to the beach. The campground is very clean and organized. It comes with your basic necessities such as water hook-up for RVs/trailers, restrooms, showers and picnic table. However, if youre needing Wi-Fi, sewer hook-ups, then this isnt for you.
