Utah Dispersed Camping Rules And Regulations

Utah is an incredibly special place and you must treat it as such.

Please, please, please always follow the 7 Leave No Trace principles and leave your dispersed campsite even cleaner than it was when you arrived.

Always pack out all your trash and always properly dispose of human waste .

Follow all other area rules, regulations, and restrictions, such as campfire restrictions, camping stay limits , and closed areas.

The goal is to limit human impact on Utahs natural areas as much as possible. Failure to respect our public lands can lead to shutdowns. No one wants that!

Several dispersed campsites along Smith Mesa Road 1/2 mile or more off Kolob Terrace Road . Many scenic and secluded spots, both in the trees and out on the mesa. There are rock fire rings, but check on current fire regulations. No bathrooms, no tables, no water Its more than 30 minutes from Zion visitor center, but is the closest quiet free camping since the Smithsonian Road near Grafton became impassable except for high clearance 4×4. The dispersed camping along lower Kolob Terrace is often filled with loud action sport types and homeless people living out of their vehicles.

By:Stephanie Yarbrough+ Save to a List

Southern Utah is a magical place, unlike anywhere Ive ever been before. The scenery is spectacular and ever-changing there are tons of activities to do there are so many wide-open spaces. Its hard not to fall in love with it. Even better, there are so many great places to camp, even from your car! So where are the best places to car camp? Here are my favorites:

To escape the crowds you can head south on Sheep Bridge Rd out of Virgin for 1.75 miles. The dirt road is washboard at times but very doable in all vehicles.

But be warned on mountain bike event weekends the place gets crazy busy and dusty!

Do stop at the information board after a mile to read the rules and look at the camping maps.

The first camping area is to the right and you MUST camp in one of the 9 designated sites.

There are 4 more sites a short drive further south. These sites are larger and I often see more than one RV in each site just be considerate and give your neighbors plenty of space or move along.

About potable water and toilets as shown on the map you can either drive to La Verkin or the first bus stop in Springdale .

There are toilets at the Sheepbridge Trailhead halfway between Rte 9 and Rte 59 as shown on this map:

Verizon has very good LTE service at these campsites.

Near Zion National Park

There are not many free spots to camp just outside of Zion National Park, but there is one spot that seems to be overlooked a lot! On the west side of Zion on Highway 9, there is a sign for the La Verkin Overlook. Down that road, there are about ten campsites down these various roads, and its all BLM Land. The views from the overlook are spectacular! Admittedly, you are 18 miles from the entrance to Zion National Park, but for a free and beautiful campsite, I wouldnt complain!

You really cant go wrong camping in these areas. Proximity to activities, scenic views, and campfires, and all of that at a price tag of free! All of these campsites are accessible and camper friendly for cars, trucks, backpackers, or RVers! Southern Utah is a beautiful place to explore, and I hope to inspire more people to visit the area with these awesome free campsites. So pitch a tent, pull up your RV, or throw your sleeping bag in your car, because southern Utah is where you need to be!

Navigating Blm Land In Utah

BLM land comprises the majority of public land in Utah and is mostly concentrated in the southern desert regions. However, parts of this land are inaccessible and unusable for the general public. The BLM operates under a multiple use and sustained yield policy, meaning portions of the land can be used for pursuits other than outdoor adventure, like oil mining, grazing, and timber harvesting.

That being said, there are still millions and millions of acres of Utah BLM land with roads leading to the perfect camp spot, if youre willing to search.

The road in is Dirt and 0 miles from a paved road. There are 1-5 campsites at this location and the maximum RV length is 25 feet. You may stay 16 days at Coal Creek. Terrific camping spot close to Kolob Canyons. Road was a little rough but I made it with my Honda Odyssey. There are about 7 spots but honestly you could just park wherever in the campsite area. Some people have made fire rings with the stones there so bring your wood if you wanted to. No bathrooms or service. Please make sure to pick up your trash.

The road in is Paved. The maximum RV length at Dry Lake Bed BLM is unlimited. You may stay 14 Days at Dry Lake Bed BLM. Very large open area used for staging OHVs. Easy in/out and lots of room to maneuver a large rig. Coral Pink Sand Dunes SP is just down the road for water and dump for $8 fee. No water or restrooms available at the site. Great area to take OHV or Jeeps. It can get windy with blowing sand.

Moab Utah: Willow Springs Road

Just about 13 miles northwest of Moab, there is a road out seemingly in the middle of nowhere called Willow Springs Road. This is all BLM land , which is public land. All along this road are campsites that are accessible by car or RV. Once you get about a mile down the road, it gets bumpy and youll need 4WD, but the first mile of it as well as some of the side roads are passable by low clearance cars. The 360 degree views in this area are spectacular, and its a great place to base if you are hanging out in Moab for a while! But be sure you get there early on a weekend, as the sites tend to fill up fast!

While Southern Utah is mostly comprised of red rock desert, there are still trees and mountains to be found in the southwest region. Fishlake National Forest and Dixie National Forest are the only two at or south of the I-70 interchange.

Fishlake National Forest is a goldmine for relatively established dispersed campsites with 35 dispersed camping locations. You cant go wrong traveling down any of the forest service roads to find a site that suits you.

Dixie National Forest also offers quite a few dispersed camping spots, but if privacy is what youre after, consider following FR 20048 and FR 20049 for some prime pull-offs in the heart of the forest. Here, youll also be close to Hendrickson Lake Trailhead, a moderate 1.8-mile hike to an aspen-surrounded lake.

Community reviews and ratings provide you with up to date information and help you select the best camp site for your next camping trip.

This is a platform for sharing campgrounds and camp sites you have discovered. We are community driven, and while we will be adding many free camping spots, we hope that you will add some of your favorite camping places as well. By sharing camping information freely, we can all spend less time researching campgrounds, spend less money, and more time camping. If everyone contributes a few campsites, we’ll all have more places to go camping.

We are not actively seeking Wal-Marts, truckstops or other parking lots and will not be adding very many of these. There are enough Wal-Mart and truck stop directories out there already. However, if a member of the community finds one of these locations to be useful for overnight RV parking and creates an entry, we may approve the listing.
