San Luis State Wildlife Area Mosca Co

Technically, this state wildlife area is not free. Youll need a Colorado Fishing or Hunting License. But, the cost of a license is worth it if you plan to hunt or fish anyway. Plus the sites have electric hook ups! Its not too far from the Great Sand Dunes so the location is great as well. Every time weve been there, its quiet and nearly empty so weve gotten sites with beautiful views of the lake and stunning sunsets almost daily.

Theres still so much of our beautiful state we havent taken the RV to and well likely be adding to this list often, so check back.

A quick 2 and a half-hour drive leads you to one of my personal favorite spots, Forest Road 399.

Drive two miles past the La Plata Peak Trailhead . After you make it through the private property, plenty of quiet, secluded dispersed campsites await you.

What I love about this area is its access to some of the best Colorados 14ers. Keep in mind this road is rough and gets rougher the further you go. High clearance recommended.

Colorado Tour, Dispersed Camping Part 2

One of my favorite hidden gems for free camping near Denver isnt in Colorado at all. About two hours north of Denver is Vedauwoo, Wyoming.

Home to stunning rock formations, mountain biking, hiking and climbing, this gem offers plenty of outdoor recreation a stones throw from the interstate.

Strange, I know, but its truly a fantastic place to camp. Most campsites offer some shelter with rocks to climb. The big skies mean sunsets are to die for.

This camping area is accessible with any vehicle and even RVs can boondock at these sites near Denver. Its truly an awesome spot if youre looking for a quick, easy, family-friendly free campsite near Denver.

Lake Pueblo Pueblo Co

If you like boating, fishing, and amazing sunsets, youll like Lake Pueblo State Park. Pueblo is in one of the more milder climate areas of Colorado so you can enjoy this state park year round. Its a fishing hot spot for Colorado with 60 miles of shoreline, but also offers great fly-fishing with its access to the Arkansas River below the dam. Lindsays family has been camping there for years because of its proximity to Colorado Springs, our hometown. But its also become one of our top choices for spots to fly-fish.

River Run Rv Resort Granby Co

This brand new RV resort is so nice, weve already been twice since it opened and well likely go back every year. It lives up to its claim as a resort and since its so new, the entire park is in amazing condition. The grounds and sites are well kept and they have more amenities than most RV parks weve been to.

With a pool and several hot tubs, two on-site bars/grills, a mini bowling alley, an arcade, tons of outdoor fun , and even more that were forgetting, you hardly even have time to leave the park. The park is also so large that youll want to rent one of the golf carts that they have available for guests.

But dont get too swept up in the amenities because theres lots to do in the surrounding area. River Runs location is another reason why we love it. Theres so much to do in Granby all year long, including a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the most visited and popular national parks in the country.

Dispersed Camping To Be Banned In Popular Colorado Mountain Valley

Camping will look different this year in one of Colorado’s most beautiful mountain valleys.

Dispersed camping is coming to end for six popular backcountry drainages nestled in the Crested Butte Valley. To ensure a sustainable future for both recreational camping and the natural beauty of backcountry, officials will begin to transition dispersed camping areas to designated camping sites only for backcountry areas along Slate River, Washington Gulch, Kebler Pass, Lake Irwin, Brush Creek, Cement Creek, and Gothic Roads.

“The changes will help to reduce impacts to the landscape and natural ecosystems, as well as the development of non-system routes, and sanitation issues,” the press release states. “Designated sites will also help contain campfires to reduce forest fires.”

Starting this spring, camping will only be allowed at designed sites in areas along Slate River and Washington Gulch Roads. These same restrictions will be rolled out across five additional camping areas this summer and fall including Kebler Pass, Lake Irwin, Brush Creek, Cement Creek, and Gothic Roads.

Designated camp sites will be marked with a two-foot-tall 6×6 post. Attached to the post will be a camping symbol along with an associated site number. Permanent metal fire rings will also be installed at each designated site.

According to officials, the goal is to have more than 200 valley wide sites designated come spring 2022.

Camp For Free: A Quick Guide To Dispersed Camping In Colorado

Sand & Stars Glamping in Dinadiawan Dipaculao Aurora

At up to $45 a night in Colorado’s most popular areas, camping can feel more like a luxury than a chance to get outdoors for a weekend escape. Luckily, some of the best camping in Colorado costs absolutely nothing.

By:Chelsea Robinson+ Save to a List

Reserving a campsite in advance has its pros: a guaranteed spot, close proximity to trails and outdoor features, and amenities like showers and bathrooms. But in some popular Colorado areas, these prime campsites can set you back upwards of $45 a night a pretty costly way to spend a weekend, especially in campgrounds that provide very little privacy in between sites.

Dispersed camping provides an easy way to camp for free in Colorado’s gorgeous National Forests and Bureau of Land Management areas as long as you know the locations and limitations.

Guanella Pass Georgetown Co

You may have driven this past on the way to Mt. Bierstadt, but you may not have known that it provides dozens of fantastic car camping spots. The drive is about an hour from Denver and it provides a great opportunity to stop in Georgetown for breakfast on the way in or out. Bighorn sheep are abundant, so keep you eyes on the hills!

*Note: Be aware of seasonal closings of Guanella Pass. CDOT closes the road in November and typically opens back up in late-May.

Lost Lake Trail Eldora Co

This spot requires a moderate hike from the well-knownHessie Trailhead. If you arrive after 8am, you can expect parking issues. Its also important to check seasonal closures of the road leading to the trailhead. During snow cover periods, it can require and extra 1-mile hike to the trailhead. If youre up for the hike, Lost Lake offers some amazing views and relatively lonely camping on non-peak days.

Being in nature can be incredible, and camping is an amazing choice to relax. Unlike other vacations, you wont have to pay for hotels, but camping can come with costs of its own.

Many campsites charge fees for things like amenities and maintenance. Fortunately, there are also free campsites for those of us who may have a budget while camping a great opportunity to save money and still be able to enjoy the outdoors. The downside is that the amenities that come with pay-per-stay campsites like bathrooms or clean-up crews may not be available at these free campsites. For many, though, roughing it in the great outdoors is worth it.

Grow your travel fund with these 11 legit ways to make extra money.

Below, weve gathered a list of 50 great free campsite options in every state in the U.S.

Carson Lake Recreation Area

Camping Travel Tent Equipment Cartoon

Location: Near Grand Junction

Carson Lake Recreation Area and the surrounding national forest land is a great spot for free camping near Grand Junction on the Grand Mesa.

The free campsites at the lake itself are marked. Each of these four campsites has a picnic table and a fire ring. A vault toilet is located on-site. A ranger tends to check on things at least once daily, especially during the summer months.

Prefer not to stay in a developed, albeit free, campground? Youll find several dispersed campsites along Forest Roads 100 and 108 on your way to the lake. Forest Roads 105 and 109 also have additional options for dispersed camping.

The roads leading to Carson Lake are unpaved but not usually very rough beyond minor washboarding. The four lakeside campsites accommodate small to medium RVs and trailers, say up to around 26 feet max. Bigger rigs should probably stick to one of the paid developed campgrounds along Highway 65 .

Do note that, while fishing is allowed here, youre not actually allowed to enter the water. This means theres no swimming, floating, or boating. Anglers must fish from the shore and refrain from wading into the water.

What I Like:

Carson Lake is quiet and peaceful with beautiful scenery. Its not technically dispersed camping, but it is completely free. Each site has a picnic table which is a nice change of pace if youre typically used to true dispersed camping.
