State Rv Camping Information

How Long Can You Stay At A New Mexico Rest Area

You can remain for no more than 24 hours in any three-day period. This does not mean that the 24 hour period resets as soon as you arrive at the next rest area. It means that the 24-hour period continues as you drive through the state, visiting one rest area after another. The State of New Mexico believes you should be able to drive from one end of the state to the other in 24 hours. Hence, they dont want you staying at each rest area for longer than necessary.

It can be confusing, but keep in mind that its nearly impossible for a highway patrol officer to know how much of that 24-hour period youve already exhausted.

Dog Canyon Dispersed Camping

Best dispersed camping near Roswell, New Mexico

Ideally located near White Sands National Park, Lincoln National Forest, and Las Cruces, Dog Canyon is a great BLM dispersed camping area in New Mexico. Youll take the road towards Oliver Lee Memorial State Park and the Oliver Lee developed campground to get here, and the camping area is located on the south side of the road before reaching the state park. This is BLM land, so dispersed camping is permitted, just dont pitch your tent too close to the developed campground.

There are no facilities at Dog Canyon, although you may be able to use the facilities at Oliver Lee. However, we wouldnt recommend counting on it since those are technically reserved for paid campers.

The views here are truly stunning and youll be treated to some incredible sunsets and sunrises at Dog Canyon. Do keep in mind that there is not water source so youll want to come prepared with all that youll need for your trip.

Dispersed Camping Off Fs 542

This dispersed camping area is a fantastic place to visit. There are numerous sites marked by numerous signs and fire rings. Some of the locations there are more accessible than others.

Be prepared to travel on a strewn-together road.

It is not recommended that you access this if you are driving a small sedan or towing something that is difficult to maneuver. Youll almost certainly need four-wheel drive and some ground clearance.

Theres no running water or an outhouse, so its rough camping. Turn left after passing the group camping site. Its also a great hiking spot in the area, and it appears to be safe.

Cars and dirt biking can be heard in the distance, but the activities finish around 7 p.m., making for a quiet night. Youll enjoy it a lot.
