This free campground in Oregon offers dispersed sites near South Lake, a small lake in the Siuslaw National Forest. Its a lightly used campground, which allows access to trout fishing and non-motorized boating on South Lake, and hunting and hiking on the Pioneer-Indian Trail.

This free campground is just far enough out from the coast and the city that youll likely be alone, even on a Saturday night. Most folks coming to this area of the forest camp in the more popular Hebo Lake campground. If you dont need amenities and are just looking for a beautiful place to camp, South Lake is a better option. The Dyrt camper Chris H.

Campbell Tree Grove Campground Quinault Rain Forest

Campbell Tree Grove Campground sits at the southern edge of Olympic National Park in the Quinault Rain Forest. Its remote, peaceful and doesnt cost a thing. While there isnt much in the way of facilities, each site does include a picnic table and fire pit, and many are located right along the West Fork of the Humptulips River. The heavily wooded campground filled with giant Douglas Fir and Western Cedar trees can be reached about 22 miles down a mostly dirt road, while the nearest gas station and grocery store is about 30 miles away, which means youll need to bring food for the duration of your stay, and plenty of water or a water filter. There are no showers, but taking a dip in the cool, tranquil pools is an amazing way to get refreshed when you start to feel grungy.

What People Are Saying About Hee Hee Illahee Rv Resort

Great park, always very peaceful and tranquil, despite being close to the freeway and easy to get to. Kid friendly, with a playground, pool, and hot tub. Decent for pets, too doggy bags are provided, and there a fenced-off leash dog run as well that, while not large, was large enough to let our two lab mixes get their energy out. 🙂 James, Google Review

This free campground is located on Round Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest near Sisters and features six campsites along with access to swimming, fishing and hiking. The setting is jaw-dropping with 3 Finger Jack mountain as the backdrop, and the heavy deer population and other wildlife makes it great for animal and bird watchers too. In fact, dont be surprised if one of the more curious deer tries to take a peak into your tent at night. Due to fire damage there are no facilities, but it definitely makes for a true wilderness experience.

Sprawling across eastern Oregon, northern Nevada and southwestern Idaho, the Owyhee Canyonlands are a vast wilderness of desert plateaus and river canyons managed by the BLM. Numerous dispersed camping areas dot the area, some of the best of which are found along the Owyhee River below the dam.

    Permits Fees And Limitations:

    • Most BLM campgrounds require a fee to use a campground. These fees help maintain the facilities. Selecting a campsite is usually on a first come first serve basis. However, some campgrounds take reservations which can be made at recreation.gov. Please obey all posted rules specific to the campground and keep the following in mind.

    • Fee sites vary in price. Please check the campgrounds website or call the local field office for details.
    • Camping stay limits vary by location but are generally about two weeks within a month period.
    • Pay camp fee within 30 minutes of occupying a site.
    • A campsite is rented ONLY once it has been paid in full with the pay-stub properly completed and displayed on site and the site is occupied by campers.
    • Do not leave personal property unattended for more than 72 hours.
    • Due to adverse weather, many campgrounds are only seasonally available. Make sure to check if the campground is open before planning your trip.

Free Or Reduced Rates For Campground Hosts:

If you have more flexibility in your schedule if you are retired, homeschool, etc being a campground host might be an option for you. Typically you can get free rates to camp in exchange for being available to help & answer questions for the campers. The minimum stay is typically one month, though, but this might be a fun option for the summertime if you plan ahead.

You can find available campgrounds that need hosts by searching this website for National Parks & Forests all around the country. I found a number of locations in Washington and Oregon, so definitely check that site out to see if theres an option that will work for you. I would think youd need to schedule this out far in advance though.

Dispersed Camping In Oregon: The Rules Around Campfires

Lostine Oregon wallowa county. Eagle cap wilderness

Wildfires are a huge problem in Oregon, and the penalties for ignoring fire restrictions can be severe.

Subsequently, campfires and charcoal BBQs are forbidden in state forests during Oregons fire season, which usually runs from July through to mid-October. Dates can change, so make sure to check before camping. You can see current fire information here and current area restrictions here.

If you have checked with local authorities and theyve said it is ok to build a fire then remember to only use dead wood that is no larger than wrist size, and to never leave a campfire or stove unattended its illegal to do so. You will know your campfire is out if you can stick your hand into the ashes and they are cool to the touch.

However instead of building campfires, we recommend using a storm cooker. Then there is much less wildfire risk and you can cook knowing that the fire is contained. We believe the best ones on the market are Trangia storm cookers.
