Free Camping Spots In Florida

Pine Creek Landing In Apalachicola National Forest Florida Panhandle

My Top 8 FREE Overnight Camping Spots in Florida | RV Life in Florida

Pine Creek Landing is located in the Apalachicola National Forest and Wildlife Management Area, in the Florida Panhandle. Here, campers can set up their primitive camping shelter and gear on the banks of the Ochlockonee River. During Floridas hunting seasons, Pine Creek Landing is used as a hunting camp.

Typically campers have access to a boat ramp at Pine Creek Landing to launch small motor boats, kayaks, and canoes into the Ochlockonee River. But, for the time being, the boat ramp is closed for public safety precautions, due to severe damage.

Camping plots are first-come, first-served and are truly primitive. Campers should pack thoroughly and come prepared with all shelter, gear, food, and water. Other campers have recently reported access to a fire ring, but there is no potable water and the Port-a-John is sometimes out of service.

Find free Florida campgrounds from your car without WiFi. The Dyrt PRO lets you download maps and campgrounds without cell service. My alternative to using pro would be to drive back out to cell service.

Larry And Penny Thompson Heritage Park Campground

Larry and Penny Thompson Heritage Park Campground is the largest campground in Miami-Dade County, also one of the biggest spots for camping in Florida state.

Its located conveniently near the Everglades and attracts many capers who want the Everglades experience. The Park is next to Zoo Miami, which makes it awesome for families with children.

The campground is located in southwest Miami, just two miles west of the Florida Turnpikes Ext 13. The Park covers 270 acres of camping and fun.

There are 240 campsites with full electrical and water hookups. Some of the sites are pull-throughs, which make it convenient for large RVs. Also included for campers are restroom/laundry facilities, a camp store, picnic shelter, a pool, a freshwater lake with a beach, plus jogging and bike trails. Pets are welcome in the RV sites, but not in the tent sites.

The Park has excellent ratings, and visitors appreciate the security measures. Well-cared-for campsites, plus the peaceful and charming surroundings, make Larry and Penny Thompson Heritage Park Campground a perfect place for a vacation.

Bring Mosquito Spray And Sunscreen

Florida has one seasonSummer. It comes in two variants, wet and wetter. Needless to say, this hot, moist climate creates a few issues, namely mosquitoes and sunburns.

Buy some good bug spray and, while youre at it, get sunscreen as well. The tropical sun will sizzle your skin in a couple hours.

Furthermore, when youre boondocking youll find yourself further from cities and thus, closer to mosquitoes. A few itchy bites can ruin a trip fast. Protect yourself.

Prepare Well To Camp For Free

5 Free Camping Sites in Florida

Florida is a wonderful place to book your next free camping vacation. If you dont like crowds, it is best to go to unpopular places. Such will not be crowded and you can enjoy serenity throughout your stay.

The campsites we bring you here are free, meaning they do not have an entry fee. However some services may cost you. These campsites are perfect for a family budget vacation, for hikers, nature lovers and hunters.

Make sure that you prepare well for the wilderness. Take extra synthetic clothes, waterproof shoes or boots, a hat, a bug repellent and enough food and water supplies as these camps dont have bars and facilities like in other more popular campgrounds.

Some of these campsites are used for hunting and so they might be closed during hunting season. You do not want gunshots when you are asleep in your tent.

What You Need For Free Camping In Florida

Find Free Camping In Florida, From the Panhandle to the ...

Free camping typically means youre on your own as far as facilities go. Youll need to be self-contained for cooking, showering, using the restroom, and electrical needs. Having access to a generator or battery bank will be essential for many people, especially in an RV.

Water is another limiting factor in utilizing free camping, so bring enough water for cooking and washing. Cutting your trip short due to a water shortage can be a frustrating end to an otherwise fabulous trip.

Be mindful of proper waste disposal for both bagged trash and wastewater. Have a plan for disposing of it, even if it means taking it with you when you leave. Just as importantnever dump RV gray or black tank waste on the ground. Doing so is not only unsanitary and disrespectful to the next camper, but its also almost always illegal.

Remember The Middle Keys

The Overseas Highway is an incredibly popular destination. Like all tourist destinations, most folks are in a hurry. They spend their time at either the north end near Miami, or at the South end, near Key west.

If you want to avoid crowds and find bargains, consider spending time exploring the middle Keys.

It may come at the cost of a longer drive to explore Key West, but you may find better bargains and lower prices in the middle Keys, away from the crowds.

Murphy Island In Northwest Florida

Best Camping Adventures in Florida

Within the St. Johns River WMD, where the St. Johns River and Dunns Creek converge, is a secluded campground known as Murphy Island. The quietness of this campsite is due, in part, to it only being accessible by boat.

The Murphy Creek Conservation Area is mostly hardwood swamp and wetlands formed by Murphy Creek and the St. Johns River. The muggy, Florida environment means that extra strength and liberally-applied bug spray is a must here.

Around the campsite and conservation area, campers can make use of more than six miles of hiking trails, as well as boating trails in the river. Campers on Murphy Island are roughing it in a secluded area, meaning that there is no staff to regularly check on visitors. Its imperative for campers to follow all safety signs and pack thoroughly for all food, shelter, water, and gear necessities. And, did we mention bug spray?
