Shoshone National Forest has some of the best game species fishing opportunities in the United States. The Grand Prismatic Spring holds the third position in the list of the biggest hot springs on earth and is the most photographed spot at Yellowstone National Park. It is a great attraction that you should not miss while at Yellowstone. The incredible colors resembling a rainbow make it a very beautiful hot spring. You can visit the Grand Prismatic Spring early in the morning when there are fewer people in the area.

Have stayed here a few times, most recently the week before the 4th of July. The campsites are very large and decently easy to access, the road is unpaved/dirt most of the way but not rough at all- I was able to drive it in a Honda Fit without concern. Theres no service at any of the sites, but there is a few miles up the road. There are bear boxes at every site and no fire rings but it was easy to gather rocks and make my own ring. The creek was gorgeous, and the site is located right within the park so very convenient- probably 20-30 minutes from Jackson Lake Lodge. I went at 9am and had my choice of almost any site.

Best Time To Visit The Yellowstone National Park
There is no best time to visit Yellowstone National Park because each season has its pros and cons. However, most people visit the park during the summer season when the temperatures are above the freezing point and most of the popular trails used for hiking, horseback riding, and biking are clear of snow. This means that during the summer season the park is usually crowded. If you need peace and solitude, then you can visit the park during fall or winter although most of the parts are not accessible.
How Do I Choose A Yellowstone Campground
Youll want to select a campground based on several factors including seasonal opening and closing dates, what parts of the park you would most like to see, and the time of day youll be arriving at your overnight destination.
If you are unfamiliar with the parks campgrounds, start by viewing the many campground details available on the Yellowstone National Park Service website, including photographs, maps, and schedules.

Lily Lake Camping Area Shoshone National Forest Wyoming
Located just northeast of Yellowstone National Park along Highway 212, the Lily Lake camping area offers a small, traditional campground as well as a variety of undesignated, dispersed sites.
Between Cooke City and Beartooth Pass, the turnoff for this camping area is very near to the junction with Highway 296, which connects Cody, Wyoming to the Beartooth Highway.
The campground, which has a boat launch and is located by the lake, has a handful of designated camping spots and a 22 length limit.
Many of the dispersed sites, while farther from the lake, can handle larger rigs and offer sweeping views of the surrounding terrain.
From the highway, take the Lily Lake gravel road 1 ½ miles to the top of the hill where the dispersed sites begin. These sites have no services but are free with a 16-day limit.
This camping area is likely inaccessible in spring without 4-wheel drive as the winter snows melt off. But starting in the middle of summer, Lily Lake can be a great stopping point for travelers either planning to spend just a night or hoping to land in one spot for a while.
Between Old Faithful And West Thumb: Shoshone Lake
Just 10 minute drive from Old Faithful lies a trailhead to an incredible backcountry lake Shoshone. Its the second largest lake in Yellowstone, but there are no roads to it, so backpacking three miles to it and sleeping along its black-sand shores is an incredible experience. Youll go through a forest before the trail opens up to grassy plains and the shores of the lake.
With its deepest section stretching down 205 feet, its beauty has been attracting people for hundreds of years, including members of the Shoshone tribe and early fur trappers, including Jim Bridger who allegedly visited it in 1833. The lake is the source of the Lewis River, which enters the Snake River system and eventually reaches the Pacific Ocean. Lake trout, brown trout and Utah chubs inhabit the lake.
Theres also an amazing geyser basin northwest of the shores, which is fun to explore. There are no boardwalks, so park officials urge visitors to act responsibly to protect the fragile thermal features and to avoid getting hurt.
You can make this a one-night out-and-back or camp around the lake for more mileage and nights.
To get to the DeLacy trailhead from Old Faithful, head east on the Grand Loop Road. The trailhead will be on your right.

Darby canyon has free camping. About 15-20 minutes from Driggs. No amenities. Some cowpies, which is a downer depending on the site. Totally legit though as long as you have less than twenty people and some other restrictions. Stream nearby. The wind cave and some awesome views are a bit further up the Darby Canyon Trail. Flat ground. Pretty good time. Dispersed camping is allowed through most of the Jedidiah Smith Wilderness with some exceptions as posted, just so you know.

Easier Set Up And Take Down
This really depends on a few factors. If there are no hookups for your vehicle at the free camping area and you are driving a ride-along RV, there likely wont be too much to do other than pull in and find a space to park.
But many campers take a good amount of set up once you get to the site. Modern tents are incredibly easy to set up. Even the larger ones can often be set up with just one person. And if you opt for a foam roll rather than a blowup mattress you can be set up and ready to sleep within minutes of arriving to your site.

Permits Fees And Campfires
Yellowstone National Park is surrounded on all sides by public land in the form of National Forests, all of which permit dispersed camping. To the south you have Bridger-Teton & Targhee National Forests along with Grand Teton National Park, to the east you have Shoshone National Forest, to the north and west Custer & Gallatin National Forest.

Cell Service And Data
We keep hearing in the media that smartphone use is an epidemic and people are spending way too much time scrolling on their screens. Hey! Its part of the reason we advocate getting kids outside camping and away from television, video games and other devices.
But smartphones and the internet have become a major part of our world. We use them for communication with others , for directions and maps, for knowledge and research, for documenting and even for things like clocks and flashlights.
Unfortunately, given the remote nature of many free camping areas, cell phone service and cell data are almost non-existent. While the good news is that you will have no choice but to commune with friends, family and nature, the flipside is you need to be more prepared.
Bring maps. Lots of maps. You can get them online , you can get them from local rest areas and welcome centers, and from the rangers office.
Either write down or print out your research on the local area, especially phone numbers for the rangers and local authorities.
Bring a wireless power station and keep it charged. Cell phones tend to run low on battery when they are constantly trying to connect to the nearest cell tower. If you know that the area has poor service, you can either turn your phone off or put it on airplane mode to save the battery until you need it.
Upper Geyser Basin & Old Faithful Point Loop
This is a loop trail where you cover a distance of 7.9 kilometers and gain an elevation of 109 meters in approximately 2 hours. The difficulty level on this trail is rated as moderate. The trail features hot springs and is best used between May and October mainly for hiking, birdwatching, nature trips, and walking.

Why Visit The Grand Teton National Park National Park
You will find few landscapes in the world that are interesting, striking, and memorable as the Grand Teton National Park. This national park has so much to offer including valleys, rivers, mountains, wildlife, wildflowers, skies, abundant flowers, and anything else that interests you. On top of that, the Grand Teton National Park boasts a rich cultural history including old homesteads and cattle ranches. Walk on the trails that were built by the Civilians Conservations Corps. These are just a few things you will enjoy in this park thus an incredible way to spend your holiday.
North Crandall Trailhead Shoshone National Forest Wyoming
The famous Beartooth Highway, which brings travelers up and over 10,000 feet to a breathtaking, alpine mountain pass, is well known for good reason.
The endless switchbacks and tight, harrowing curves can be both thrilling and terrifying at the exact same time.
It also provides a convenient connection between Red Lodge and Yellowstones northeast entrance. But the nearby and the lesser-known Chief Joseph Highway also provides a similar, albeit less-frightening experience.
Passing through the aptly-named Sunlight Basin, with wide-open Wyoming skies, rolling sage meadows, and glorious mountain scenery, this well-maintained and beautiful route joins with Cody, Wyoming for access to the parks east entrance.
Those looking to boondock along this lovely stretch of highway might consider an overnight at the North Crandall Trailhead, located just west of the Crandall Ranger Station, in the Shoshone National Forest.
The North Crandall Road is suitable for all vehicles and extends less than one mile before arriving at the camping area, making for a convenient overnight for those on the move.
In truth, this camping area seems more designed for parking horse trailers than setting up camp for multiple nights. But the scenery is outstanding and camping is free.
There is a vault toilet and a few undesignated fire rings but no other services.
Some stunning hiking is available nearby for those wanting to stretch their legs a bit.

Can I Camp Anywhere In Yellowstone
Camping or overnight vehicle parking in pullouts, picnic areas, picnic grounds or any place other than a designated campground are not permitted and there are no overflow camping facilities. However, camping is often available in neighboring communities and forests outside the park.
Camping in Yellowstone Park is limited to 14 days between July 1 and Labor Day to 30 days the rest of the year. There is no limit at Fishing Bridge RV Park.
Is Camping In Bear Country Safe
No matter where you camp in Yellowstone, youre in grizzly country. While staying in designated campgrounds where there are many other people and noises around is safer than dispersed camping outside the park, there is still a good chance youll encounter grizzly or black bears near a Yellowstone campground.
When camping, you must keep your camp clean and store all good, garbage and any scented items properly. This means in a designated bear-proof storage locker at your campsite, or in your locked vehicle at front country campsites. In the backcountry, store food and scented items in a bear cannister or hang it on your campsites food pole.

East Entrance Camping For Free In Yellowstone National Park
The East entrance into the park is one of the smaller entrances, but you will be sure to find camping spots. The east side of the Yellowstone is known for not having the best internet, unless your are near Cody Wyoming, so be prepared. There are a few options that cost around $10-$15 to camp closer to the entrance.
The only official camp spot that is free is Spirit Mountain Road, which has around 3-4 bar for Verizon and AT& T. The only issue with this spot is that it is over an hour away from the entrance to the park. If you are just stopping here for one night, on your way to Yellowstone this is the perfect spot though.
The other option that people have is the Walmart located in Cody itself, which is also over an hour from the east entrance to Yellowstone. The Walmart also has good service, and is a great place to full-time RVers to get necessary supplies.
If you are looking to get even closer to the east entrance to have a shorter drive, the only options are pull-offs. There are a bunch that you will pass with enough room to camp for a night, but one that is only 15 minutes away is . This is nothing spectacular as you are right off the main road and will hear cars go by. Free camping is not always the most glamorous but it allows you to save money!
Are The Rv Campsites In All Yellowstone Campgrounds
While all sites can accommodate RVs, many have length limits , some have limited availability, and there are seasonal considerations . Check each National Park Service and Yellowstone National Park Lodges campsite for full details. While the Fishing Bridge RV Park is the only campground with full hook-ups. After an extensive reservation, the RV Park will be welcoming guests starting September 4, 2020 through October 4, 2020.

The Best Campgrounds In Yellowstone National Park
With its spectacular scenery and unprecedented access to such wildlife as wolves, bears, elk, bison, and mountain goats, Yellowstone National Park is a one of a kind place. One of the best ways of experiencing the park is by immersing yourself in it by staying at one of the parks campgrounds.
In addition to backwoods camping, Yellowstone offers 12 managed campgrounds within the parks boundaries. These campgrounds range from large facilities with more than 400 campsites to more intimate settings with fewer than 20. Most campgrounds are open for tent and RV camping.
The parks campgrounds are sprinkled throughout the park, providing camping options in close proximity to many of the parks most popular attractions. While some offer reservations, others are available on a first-come-first-serve basis only. For those looking for free campgrounds, there are many more outside of the national parks boundaries.
How To Camp For Free In Yellowstone National Park Boondocking
Technically you are not allowed to camp for free in Yellowstone from my understanding. We asked a park ranger if they cared if people camped in pullouts and visitor parking lots and he said its frowned upon, your not supposed to. We took this with a little bit of optimism as we had seen ALOT camping throughout Yellowstone before in pull offs or parking lots. Certain parking lots do say NO CAMPING but the majority of them do not.
We have seen people camping at the old faithful visitor center, canyon village and numerous pull offs. We have now camped in Yellowstone a total of 3 nights without any issues. So where are good spots to camp in the park for scenic views, quiet areas and places you wont get a ticket.
Arguably the best spots to camp overnight inside the park are at one of the major visitor centers such as Old Faithful, Madison, Canyon Village and West Thumb. You will almost always see other campers parked overnight here depending on what time of year you visit. While these places dont have the best views, you will be at a central location in the park to go exploring the next day.
Enjoy your time in Yellowstone and plan ahead so that you make your route as efficient as possible!
