This free campground is situated within the rugged, rolling hills and oak forests that make up the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area. The scenery is stunning, and as you traverse through the region, youll pass through forests, meadows, and a desert landscape with unique rock formations. With hiking and biking trails leading to Laguna Creek, to cliffs overlooking the expanse, and to a series of scenic waterfalls located in the gorge, which path will you take first?

Free Ca Camping Sites

  • Willow Creek Road : This is a forestry road that branches of Hwy 1 . It’s a good half hour drive up a curvy mountain road, the first mile is paved, then you hit a dirt road. The sites are scattered without notice all along the side of the slope. I recommend heading up the road a good thirty minutes and finding a spot few people have claimed. Plus, you get a better view. For me, camping is best when I don’t have to listen to my neighbors, who probably love hip hop so much they have to blast it throughout the campground for everyone else to enjoy. Pack your trash and you’ll have to dig a scat hole, or hold it until you get to Gorda. Free camping typically means little to no amenities. This is what I seek when I want good, non-parking lot style camping, or glamping. Otherwise you’re heading to Plasket, Lime Kiln Creek, etc., but those are packed and booked six months in advance.
  • Another stellar set of free sites are further north from Willow Creek Rd. also off Hwy 1, about 30 minutes north of Gorda, up Nacimiento Road .
  • Cole Creek Camping Area : Shaded by oaks and adjacent to a meadow, this campsite has a little over 20 sites available. You get here from Hwy 88, south to Bear River Res. drive, drive over the dam and follow the Cole Creek Rd. Fortunately, the road is paved here too. Note, this site is only open from Summer to fall. Equipped with a bear box and parking stall.

    Camping On Public Lands

BLM-managed lands offer numerous opportunities for camping under the stars ranging from staying in an RV at a highly developed campground to simply throwing a sleeping bag on the ground in the backcountry. No matter what type of experience you are looking for, you can find it on BLM-managed public lands.

    Developed Campgrounds

At many locations the BLM provides developed facilities for camping. Campgrounds may include a variety of facilities, such as restrooms, potable water, electrical hookups, picnic areas, garbage cans, tent pads and group shelters. However, many campgrounds do not have all of these amenities and may only have a picnic table and fire ring. Make sure to check the campgrounds website or call the appropriate field office when planning your trip.

How To Snag Free Camping Near Sequoia National Park At The Last Minute

Inside: All the information you need to find and make the most of free dispersed camping near Sequoia National Park in the adjacent National Forest.

Some of the best trips are those taken at the last minute. Its fun and exhilarating to wake up and decide, Today, I am going somewhere.

    But where?

You have a campervan, RV, or tent camping gear.

    Youre set to go.

Or maybe youre already on the road looking to explore a new destination.

You crave the wilderness, but so, apparently, does everyone else these days. You Google campsites theyre all full.

    You despair.

This is where I recently found myself. Newly retired with a glorious new Glampervan named Eve, all decked out and ready to party. But nowhere to go.

A few weeks ago, I decided to head out from my San Diego base. My heart was set on seeing the giant trees in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. Id traveled there years ago, but then with my 6 young children in tow. On that vacation, more time was spent counting heads and making sure I didnt lose someone than was spent enjoying the forest.

For years I dreamed of returning, this time to gaze up into the towering gentle giants.

I knew a little about boondocking, or free camping on public lands, but had no experience camping this way. It was time to finally put up or shut up and dive into the phenomenon others raved about.

Dispersed camping near Sequoia National Park is the bomb. Like the ranger predicted, Im now addicted.

How To Find Good Stealth Camping Locations

FREE Camping in Secret San Diego: Pine Creek Road, Laguna ...

There are a variety of techniques I use to find a good stealth camping location in San Diego. I will spend a good two to three hours researching where I plan on staying.

I do not ever want to put myself in a situation where I have not planned on where Im going to spend that night.

Stealth camping research is not that hard. There are many tools and resources out there that you can utilize to help you narrow down a good stealth camping location.

The best tool is to ask other van and RV nomads where to stay. Most nomads understand how difficult it can be and stressful to find a good stealth camping location, so they are more than willing to tell you or give you ideas. Just do not take their spot if they tell you where they camp.

Below is a list of the resources I use to find a good stealth camping location.

    • Google Maps

But overnight camping on ocean beaches within the San Diego city limits is expressly verboten, and of the state park beaches that line the North County coast just two permit camping and only on designated bluff-top campgrounds, not the actual sand. My first afternoon, while still in Sunset Campgrounds, I hiked over to one of the most popular trails, The General Grant Loop Trail. It was an easy hike straight from Sunset and went through Azalea Campgrounds. Azalea was closed this summer, but looked very nice.

General Grant Tree is the focal point and the largest tree in the grove, but there looks to be many close contenders.

Below, I show screenshots of the AllTrails maps for some of my hikes. As I said above, I strongly recommend paying for the AllTrails upgrade as it allows you to us track yourself on previously downloaded maps, even with no cell signal.

Make sure to download all the maps you may want ahead of time, though, because you wont be able to do so when you are at your campsite. Remember no cell signals in the parks.

    Stealth Camping In The Countryside

The best place to stealth camp is on a nice, secluded dirt road in the countryside. Many countryside communities are only a 2030-minute drive outside San Diego. There you can find a countryside road to stealth camp on.

I find most of these roads by using:

Just make sure you are not visible from any highway because most cops are more apt to stop and investigate in the countryside than in the city.

A few of the countryside areas that I have used to stealth camp are:

    • Poway: There are a few remote sections of Poway that are ideal for stealth camping.
    • Iron Mountain: I have stayed in the Iron Mountain parking lot a few times in the back but get there past 10 pm and park furthest from the road.
    • Jamul: There are a few quiet roads in the mountains of Jamul that are perfect.

    Permits Fees And Limitations:

    • Most BLM campgrounds require a fee to use a campground. These fees help maintain the facilities. Selecting a campsite is usually on a first come first serve basis. However, some campgrounds take reservations which can be made at recreation.gov. Please obey all posted rules specific to the campground and keep the following in mind.

    • Fee sites vary in price. Please check the campgrounds website or call the local field office for details.
    • Camping stay limits vary by location but are generally about two weeks within a month period.
    • Pay camp fee within 30 minutes of occupying a site.
    • A campsite is rented ONLY once it has been paid in full with the pay-stub properly completed and displayed on site and the site is occupied by campers.
    • Do not leave personal property unattended for more than 72 hours.
    • Due to adverse weather, many campgrounds are only seasonally available. Make sure to check if the campground is open before planning your trip.

    Dispersed Camping

Camping on public lands away from developed recreation facilities is referred to as dispersed camping. Most of the remainder of public lands are open to dispersed camping, as long as it does not conflict with other authorized uses or in areas posted “closed to camping,” or in some way adversely affects wildlife species or natural resources.

What About Cell Coverage And Wifi

Dont expect coverage anywhere in the National Parks or surrounding National Forest. Supposedly, Verizon has reasonable coverage along Big Meadow Road, but I ran into one person who was not finding this to be true. I have ATT and had one momentary blip of coverage when my phone blasted in about 20 texts, and then the signal disappeared.

If you have to connect, head over to one of the parks ranger stations for your best shot at wifi. Youll see a mass of people set up all around furiously tapping at their devices.

I also found good free wifi at Stony Creek Village . Stony Creek is about 20 minutes or less from the dispersed camping area . From here, I was able to Zoom into one of my bookclubs with no connectivity issues.

    + Andrew Molera State Park

Set in a beautiful meadow, Andrew Molera State Park offers 24 campsites available on a first-come first-serve basis for a maximum of four people per site. This area is relatively undeveloped, but has picnic tables, fire pits, food storage & garbage bins, and restrooms, so you wont be completely roughing it. The hike-in campsite is about mile from the parking area, and youre sure to love everything the area has to offer.

An hour and a half from sunny San Diego and located in the Anza Borrego State Park, the Yaqui Wash Primitive Campground is a remote, primitive, and free spot to set up your tent or park your RV for the night.

There are no facilities here, just wide open spaces and incredible desert mountain vistas. If you time it right, you can be at this campground for certain celestial events, and with little to no ambient light, it feels as if you can see every star.

As expected it was very hot during the day and windy at night, but the small, one-mile hike was very much worth it. Krisha
