The reservoir, built in the early 1980s, created an abundance of alligator habitat, especially the maze of land and shallow water in the lakes upper reaches along the flooded Frio River and San Miguel Creek. Also, South Texas gator population holds a relatively high percentage of old gators.

What To Bring Tubing On The Frio River

You will need water shoes, a waterproof case for your phone. A waterproof camera for kids, sunscreen, water to drink, snacks to eat, and be sure to know the rules of the river regarding life jackets and alcohol consumption.

The Frio River does not require life jackets, the water is not very deep and is very clear. We did put a life jacket on our ten year old.

Alcohol is allowed but no glass containers. We hired a tube for our cooler.

Its very relaxing and if you get there early enough you can beat the crowds.

Camping On The Rio Frio River In Texas

Frio River

The Rio Frio River is a popular camping spot among Texans.

Deep in central Texas hill country lies the Frio River, or “Rio Frio,” which borders the desert and flows from underground springs in Kent in Real County to the Three Rivers area in Live Oak County. The river is a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing, tubing and rafting. The river is flanked by high limestone bluffs and lined with Bald Cypress trees. Several campgrounds line the river, and Garner State Park, which sits right on the river about 75 miles west of San Antonio, is a well-known recreational area where visitors come to fish, swim and camp.

What Else Can We Do

Garner State Park is only a 10 minute drive and definitely worth a visit. It is one of the most popular State Parks in Texas.

We booked day passes a month in advance and I would suggest arriving at the park early as there was a huge line to get in as we were leaving.

We did a short hike called Old Baldy Trailhead and it was quite steep but the views were worth it.

There are lots of other hiking options and this is a great State Park for swimming and it also has a candy store and mini golf course.

We had such a great time, we have already booked to go back next year. It was the perfect combination of activities and keeping the kids entertained while still being relaxing for the parents.

Where To Eat And Shop Nearby

Order fried chicken from Chickin Earls if you are in town on a Tuesday or Friday. Call when they open at 11 am to order and pick up as they sell out.

There are lots of cute antique stores in the little town of Leakey and an old-fashioned corner store which is worth checking out.

There is also a pizza restaurant on the Pecan Farm but we didnt try it this time.

Dear Mr President And Board Members

We cleared out the existing path . We trimmed out the overgrown brush and creeping charlie. The elevation change was 33 feet and would require 55 steps and according to the state be no wider than 4′ on public property and require railing on both sides, making it difficult for carrying tubes and/or coolers up the steps. Mr. Kaufman suggested that we clear out the other existing path a few feet away. We all agreed that the path would work better and because the elevation was much less and the steps could be wider than 8′ and according to state guidelines not require handrails if the sides are filled in to grade. We are 80% done and mostly just need the traprock delivered in and spread. It opens the park up and makes for a nice way for the community to get to the river without having to walk the road down. Our goal is to continue to take out some of the underbrush and creeping charlie to expose the beauty of the river to passerbys. The plans are similar to what the board approved in both the map and utilizing the existing path but this one was safer and easier. We are hoping to have it completed next week for use of tubing and for the community. Looking forward to approval to continue. Thank you for your consideration.

Update: At the June 21st village board meeting, they approved us to get out at the Village Park.
