How To Find Secluded Camping Spots

Where Can You Camp For Free In The Us

Ep. 181: How to Find Great Boondocking Campsites | RV travel camping DIY tutorial

Understanding different public land designations will help you find free campsites. Not all public land agencies manage dispersed camping in the same way. Some, like the National Parks, offer mostly paid campgrounds, while other agencies like the BLM typically have a 14-day free camping limit.

BLM, or the Bureau of Land Management, and US Forest Service land are the two types of public land where free camping is most easily found. Regulations vary by location and youll typically find signs at the start of the dirt road telling you how long you can stay, any fire restrictions in place, and any other important information that youll want to know. Any areas that are off-limits are generally marked by signs. Be sure to follow all rules and regulations and apply for a camping permit if one is required.

Additional Word Of Advice For Dispersed Camp Site Spotting:

  • An easy way to get familiar with this method and with CalTopo is to test this on an area you know.

  • Always look for at least two spots near each other . Your spot might be occupied or otherwise unfit for camping use , so you should always have an alternative ready. Also look for potential spots coming in and stop if you see a great one. There is no need to keep going if you have a chance of getting out of the car earlier . Check out your other scouted spots if you get a chance, just to confirm that they would work and to know for next time.

How To Find Free Camping Near Me

Below is a collection of up-to-date resources we use to find free campsites when were traveling.

*iOverlander : This app is full of user-submitted campsites as well as other traveler-friendly information like dump stations and water fills. However, since the app relies on users to add and update content, its not 100% accurate, so its worth doing some additional research once youve found a spot you are interested in. But, generally speaking, its a great place to start!

The Dyrt PRO: The Dyrt PRO offers some great resources to help you find free camping, including filters to find free campsites, offline National Forest and BLM map overlays, and a trip planner. You can try it for 30 days free by using our code FRESH90 here!

*Free Roam : This desktop and mobile app has some really helpful features. First, you can toggle on National Forest and BLM overlays, making it super easy to find public land. You can also toggle on a satellite map and zoom in to see what the roads/turnouts look like, making it easier to identify if an area might be suitable for boondocking. Second, you can also overlay Motor Vehicle Use Maps, so you dont have to go searching for the PDFs on the national forest website. Third, you can use the map layers to show cell coverage and national forest/BLM land. If you create a free account, you can also save sites or your own waypoints, making it great for multi-day planning.

Best Boondocking & Dispersed Camping Apps

Avenza Maps

Avenza Maps is an app that allows you to download maps from official sites. Some are free, like most of the road use maps from the forest service and the BLM. Others are premium paid maps. But, the beauty of Avenza maps is that it works with your phones built-in GPS tracking to help you navigate your location and can help you pinpoint available dispersed camping.

ProTip: Download your maps, such as a BLM or USFS road use map. They should have a legend, table, or section that details where dispersed camping is allowed. Once you have narrowed down a couple of options, you can head to a satellite view of Google maps to get an idea of what the spot is like shaded, full sun, by the river, etc. Its not perfect, and you still might have to do a little hunting to find the ideal site, but it helps to narrow it down a lot! We used this, Gaia, and Google Maps to find this campsite.

iOverlander

Another great app that allows you to search for campsites is iOverlander. You can search the map and filter for the type of site youre looking for. Once you click on the icon, a brief description will pop up, and you can click for additional info. I love that in this app, you can get real advice from people who have actually used these sites, and often even images, which is a huge help when youre trying to choose the best spot!

How To Find The Most Remote Camping Spots In Michigan

Heres a secret that all seasoned campers know: The less convenient a camp spot is, the more likely you are to have it all to yourself.

Of course, if you enjoy the communal aspect of camping, then more traditional, modern campgrounds may be the way to go. But plenty of folks out are looking to escape to places that are father away, harder to get to, or require a little more work.

The reward for those efforts? This kind of camping is always cheaper, if not entirely free, and in many cases you might luck out and have Mother Nature as your only neighbor.

Read on for three great ways to find the most remote camping in Michigan:

1. Seek out rustic, hike-in campsites.

Lugging all your gear to a campsite can be a big barrier for a lot of folks, and for that reason, hike-in campsites are often less crowded than traditional drive-in sites. Some state parks around Michigan offer hike-in sites in addition to, but also set away from, their modern campgrounds — a nice compromise if youd like access to amenities like shower facilities, but without being forced to listen to the din of electrified camping.

Here are rustic, hike-in campgrounds at eight state parks and rec areas around the state :

Bewabic State Park: Seven hike-in sites, located a 100- to 200-yard walk down a pathway. Located in Crystal Falls. More here

2. Try dispersed camping.

Important tips include packing out all your trash if the area where you camp does not have trash cans, disposing of pet and human waste properly, and not disturbing natural flora and fauna. Setting up your tent or camping area on durable surfaces helps to keep disruption to a minimum when youre camping in nature or the backcountry.

Colorado Dispersed Camping Rules And Regulations

As mentioned above, its extremely important to respect our public lands.

Although national forests and BLM land have slightly different dispersed camping rules, one important rule pertains to both always follow the Leave No Trace principles.

These basically boil down to disturbing the land as little as possible. Leave your campsite even cleaner than when you found it. Properly dispose of human waste . Avoid off-limits or environmentally-sensitive areas.

Like much of the American West, wildfire season in Colorado is brutal. Always check on current fire restrictions and please be very careful with campfires almost 85% of wildfires are started by humans.

Finally, respect all dispersed camping stay limits. In most national forests and BLM land, this is limited to 14 or 16 days in the same location .
