How To Watch TV On The Road When RVing

We also wanted access to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. When its nasty outside and youre stuck in the RV you really want to have some good TV! We have a Smart TV in our RV but whats the point? If you dont have Wifi available, you cant access it anyway!

I watched all of the posts on Facebook that I could find from different pages for RV Camping and Glamping but everyone kept saying nothing worked correctly for them to stream from their iPhone or iPad to the main RV TV without using their Hotspot. I am OK with using data from my Sprint iPhone because its unlimited but DONT use my Hotspot for TV!!!

Turn Off Appliances And Unplug Wall Accessories

All of your RV appliances emit some level of radiation when turned on. This radiation creates noise that can decrease the strength of the TV signal your antenna receives. Operating appliances while youre trying to get better TV reception increases what is known as the signal-to-noise ratio .

While a higher signal-to-noise ratio is only likely to impact channels that are broadcast at lower frequencies, turning off things like your air conditioner and unplugging small electronics can improve your TV reception in some cases.

What Do You Need To Power Your Tv While Rv Boondocking

Now that you have the right technology to search for, the next challenge is to provide power for the TV. You will need power for the TV and the device delivering the signal to the TV, which we will discuss separately.

There are 12-Volt DC TV models available, but they are not easy to source and significantly more expensive than standard AC models. If you can source a 12-Volt TV, the power supply in the TV should do the necessary modulation on the power signal to deliver clean power to the TV circuits.

However, if your TV is AC-powered, you can run it on a 12-Volt system with an inverter to convert the 12-Volt supply to a 120 volt AC output. When selecting an inverter to run your TV, you should source a pure sine wave inverter rather than a modified sine wave inverter.

Pure sine wave inverters are more efficient technology and less likely to damage the delicate circuitry of your TV. The negative aspect of pure sine wave inverters is that they are more expensive than modified inverters. Here is the inverter that we recommend.

Watch Cable Tv In An Rv

Tips For Getting TV Reception In Your RV

If you have a cable input pre-installed on your RV, you can take advantage of free or paid cable that many RV parks offer. Most RV parks that offer cable have a hook-up in or near the electric box, so you just simply plug the cord into your RV and the parks box.

Free cable at campgrounds typically includes between 10 and 30 channels. The advantage of cable over antenna TV is that you often get a better channel line-up including programming like ESPN.

Watching Movies While Camping Has Never Been Easier Find Out What You Need

The traditional view on camping is that its all about the great outdoors, roughing it, and spending time with friends and family. Personally, I love the fact that camping gives me and my family a great opportunity to break away from the daily exposure to the digital world and the constant connectivity to entertainment and social media.

But we have young kids, and there have been occasions when letting them watch a movie whilst we have been camping has actually given us adults a welcome break from the constant noise and activity. My wife and I have also occasionally watched movies from our tent after an exhausting day hiking through the countryside or when it starts to rain.

There are certainly benefits to being able to watch movies in this way, and whilst I dont advocate you have it as a core activity for your camping vacation, there still might be occasions when youre really relieved you brought the gear and knew how to set it all up.

Ways To Watch Tv While Boondocking

Boondocking is out-there camping with little to no amenities or hookups normally associated with traditional camping sites. Mains electricity is one of the amenities that goes by the wayside when boondocking, and whatever power you need, you will have to take with you.

With this philosophy on camping, how is it possible to take an appliance along, like a TV when boondocking, and watch it with limited access to power?

Another aspect of modern TVs is that they are considered sensitive electronic devices that need clean power or become damaged.

So not only do you need power for your TV, but you need clean power, which you will need to provide on your boondocking adventure.

Watching TV While Camping | Rock the Park

What I intend to do with this guide is tell you how you can watch movies whilst camping. The guide includes details on what you need, what to be aware of, how to set everything up correctly, and some recommendations on products you could purchase if you want to do so.

I am not going to go into the rights and wrongs of whether you should bring technology away with you on a camping trip, its entirely up to you, and as long as you respect any other people camping in your vicinity, then I see no problem in doing so.

But given that you probably reached the Outdoor Movie Projectors website by asking the question how can I watch movies on a camping trip, I felt it only fair that I give you the best advice possible, so you can do it yourself.

Its certainly becoming more popular. I have lost count of the number of campsites weve visited over the last few years which now come with free WiFi access and they wouldnt be doing that unless there was a demand for it from their guests.

I have also included some recommendations on movies to watch whilst camping at the end of the how-to guide. You should find something for everyone in there, so scroll down and take a look if you are stuck for ideas on what to watch in the great outdoors.

Whats The Cheapest Way To Get Tv In An Rv

If you already have DISH satellite TV in your home, you can add a DISH Outdoors plan for just $5 per month. You will need to buy the satellite antenna upfront, though. But the DISH Outdoors plan is really the cheapest satellite TV for RV, especially since you can pay for just the months you travel .

If you want to DIY your TV on the road, the cheapest way to get local TV stations in your RV is to use a digital TV antenna mounted to a window. With a simple $30 TV antenna, its possible to get local stations that are broadcasted up to 150 miles away from your campsite, as long as there arent any major obstructions to your signal.

Some RVs come pre-equipped with a TV antenna on the roof. But if you dont have one built in, the great news is that TV antennas are usually less than $30 and easy to install. Youll want to get a long-range TV antenna for maximum use in an RV.

Final Thoughts From Me

Watching a movie when on a camping trip can be great fun, and the technology that you will need has come down significantly in price over recent years, as well as the size too meaning you can have a portable movie theater set-up in minutes straight out of your bag.

Having said that, when my family goes camping, we usually like to be completely technology-free. But there has been the occasional evening when we want to entertain the kids or wait until they are asleep and just the two of us cuddle up and chill out.

Most of the time we will read a book or Kindle, but having a camping movie theater option gives us a choice that we never used to have before. Its only the last couple of years that we have done this.

If there is bad weather and its raining, it has been a fantastic way in which we can all retreat back into the warmth of our tent and spend a couple of hours together watching a movie.

If you have not tried it before, then give it a go. The equipment you need to buy can be reasonably cheap, and it could offer a great new angle to your camping trips this year.

PS: Since writing this post, I have reviewed a selection of portable camping projectors that are perfect for a campsite. You can read those reviews by clicking here. There should be something for every budget.

You Might Need Additional Speakers For Sound

Again, this is entirely dependent on how many people are watching the movie and what level of sound and audio you want. The options for audio include:

  • Portable Bluetooth speakers
  • Built-in sound from your media player
  • Built-in sound from your movie projector

If theres just the two of you in a tent, and you dont want to disturb your fellow campers then you can simply share a pair of headphones.

If you want something with a bit more beef, or have more people wanting to watch the movie, then Bluetooth speakers are a must. The portable Bluetooth speakers I recommend are by Dbsoars, are robust, waterproof, and can be fully charged before you leave with a battery life of 40 hours which is more than enough for a camping trip.

If you are interested and want to know more then go take a look at the Dbsoars Bluetooth speakers on Amazon .

And finally your chosen media player is probably going to have some built-in speakers already. Whilst they probably wont be ideal if you have a group of people trying to watch the movie, it might be just fine if there are two in a tent or just a couple of kids you want to keep entertained.

Other Essential Things To Consider

How to watch iPhone APPs on your TV while camping #rvcamping

My guide to watching movies whilst camping is designed to make everything as simple as possible. For example, Ive recommended that you buy a small portable camping projector, have a small roll-up screen such as Carls blackout cloth material, and you play movies from a USB or thumb drive for easier portability.

The key here is to make everything as lightweight and easy to carry as possible. If you are hiking off into the wilderness, then it might not be at all practical as space will be at a premium.

Evidently, things will be easier if you are car-camping as you can take a lot more gear with you in the back of your vehicle.

But there are some other things that you should always consider when watching movies at a campsite. Ive listed those below:

  • For the best viewing experience, always wait until it is pitch black at night
  • It might also be worth investing in a screen or using a white sheet
  • Portable projectors have very poor speakers, so consider an additional sound source
  • Be respectful of your campsite neighbors
  • The final point is so important.

Many people will go on camping trips to escape from the constant noise and chatter that modern life offers. That means many people who might be camping near you wont want to hear movies, music, and loud noises, or have bright lights in the campsite that can come off the projector.

So What Exactly Is A Fire Stick

Technology changes so rapidly these days that often times its hard to keep up. Fire Stick is a streaming device that connects to your TV. Using Wi-Fi, you can then stream content from the TV. Youll enjoy HD streaming in a compact HDMI stick the size of a USB flash drive. Fire Stick is officially branded Amazon Fire TV Stick, however, the general population simply knows it as Fire Stick.

The Fire Stick plugs into your TVs HDMI port. It has the capability of streaming access to TV shows, movies, music, photos, and games. Its easily transportable to other media devices and houses all your media content.

Its available from Amazon and youll receive everything you need including your new Fire Stick, the remote, a USB cable, power adapter, HDMI extender, 2 AAA batteries, and an instructional guide. It also includes the Alexa Voice Remote which makes the Fire Stick a great bargain!

    Portable Antennas For Rvs

If you opt for a portable satellite TV antenna, youll need to set your equipment up on a tripod each time you make camp. Portable antennas can take an hour or more to set up and get working, which can be frustrating depending on where you are. Youll need to set up the tripod, level it, attach the antenna, and then manually adjust it to the right angle to get a signal .

Since the antenna will be left outside day and night, youll also need to secure the antenna to your RV with a long chain and a padlock to prevent theft. Portable antennas are great for people who want satellite TV in several different vehicles, such as a truck for tailgating parties and a fifth wheel when theyre going camping with the family.

A lot of portable antennas can be mounted to the roof with a roof mount kit. So, if you dont want to mount it now but you might want to in the future, get an antenna that has the option of being mounted or portable.

How To Watch Tv In Rv Without Using Generator

RV TV – 4 Easy Ways to Get TV On Your RV!

Generator in a rv can be of much help. When you are camping at sites without electricity hookup, its the generator that comes to your help. Having a generator is so much necessary, but at times people just avoid buying it because of various reasons like extra cost, weight or they just dont feel the need of it.

A generator also helps in running entertainment systems lie music, television etc. In this post, lets see how one can enjoy television when generator is missing on your rv.

    1. Get an inverter to power the TV in RV

Using inverter to power the television in your rv is the most common and practical way to go. An inverter converts the 12 v from the house batteries in your RV to the 110 V AC. It produces the sine wave in 110 V. A television will mostly run using a 110 V ac input and in that case, you either connect the television to a direct electric supply, or a generator. And, in absence of both of these, the way to go is to use an inverter.

What about 12V TV : Not all televisions run on 110 V AC, you will also find televisions that work on 12V DC and in which case, you will not need an inverter. So, if you can have 12V dc battery operated televisions then why even go for 110 V running tvs. Well, the 12v battery run televisions may not be that efficient, and they also tend to draw a lot of power and thus, using them too much may mean your batteries are drying.
