Camping At Lake Thunderbird

I stayed at the Turkey Pass campground situated on the southern part of Lake Thunderbird. It cost $33 per night to stay in spot 6. Its located right off of Highway 9 which will take you right into Norman, OK. The campground is a standard large RV park and when I visited it was about 75% full. There were lots of families and lots of RVs. Many people had boats at their spots and utilized the nearby ramp throughout the day.

The bathroom was average and consisted of bathrooms and then shower rooms on the back half. The showers were free and not coin-operated which is a great perk these days! The campground was clean and well-kept and everything was in working order. Id return to this campground again!

Trekking At Lake Thunderbird

This state park is advertised as having the most miles of trails in the state park system and theres a lot! The sign shows several different paths to take including a 3-mile, 13-mile, and a 10-mile advanced loop to take advantage of all the trails. Bikers, hikers, and even horses are allowed on most of these paths so make sure to follow etiquette and yield rules when on the paths. They can be very busy!

There are also several other trail areas around this large lake but the Clear Bay area is the densest. You can continue east and travel over the dam and hike to the northern areas for the most adventurous of people! I didnt explore the northern and eastern areas but this could be an easy day trip from Oklahoma City.

Choosing A Camping Spot

Even more crucial than picking the ideal place to pitch your tent is selecting the correct campsites. In fact, your choice of campsites may make or break your vacation. Here are some suggestions for selecting the best one:

Choose a campsite that caters to families with small children if youre camping with your family. People who choose to camp in their RV have the same option. Find a campsite that caters to your favorite camping style. Look for campsites that have immediate access to water, such as a local river or Lake Thunderbird. Its a simple truth that camping near water is more enjoyable.

Make sure theres a fire pit and a picnic table! For improvised storage and dining, a modest table might be extremely useful. When choosing a campground, aim for one that is upwind, since you dont want to spend the night next to your neighbors campfire. If you dont want bugs to be your buddies, avoid any campground with dead trees and shrubs. This also applies to cabin rentals!

Discovery Cove Nature Center

Also located in the Clear Bay Area on the south side of the lake, you will find the Lake Thunderbird Discovery Cove Nature Center. This is a wonderful place to bring children to learn about the animals that live in Oklahoma. Families and schools bring kids year-round to experience the touch and feel center. Live snakes, fish, turtles, tarantulas, scorpions, and much more can be observed and touched. Safety classes are given to kids to help them learn about what to do if they encounter or are bitten by poisonous snakes. The nature center also provides fishing clinics, animal tracking classes and guided tours of the nature trails.

Note as well that Norman is located in a bald eagle migration area. Between the months of December and February, many eagles can be found roosting in the surrounding trees. Explore the trails on your own and try to find these majestic creatures. On designated Saturdays during these key months, you may sign up for the Eagle Watch tour through the Nature Center. To do so, call 321-4633. Space is limited, so reserve your spot early.

Look For The Best Water

More water, more water, more water! Water is plentiful, but there isnt a drop to drink unless you pack a filter! You should always filter or treat Lake Thunderbird water with a UV purifier to eliminate bacteria, protozoa, and other pollutants that may make you ill, no matter how clean it seems. If possible, get your water from flowing streams that flow into or out of the Lake Thunderbird. Moving streams carry less particle and biological debris, which tends to collect near the Lake Thunderbirds margin. If you need to get water from the Lake Thunderbird, either wade out as far as you can or use a water filter with a long input line that you can throw farther out into the Lake Thunderbird. It will be better for you if you filter it more.
