Little Niagara Falls, Sulphur, Oklahoma. Pure Artesian spring water

Hiking Trekking And Springs

There are several different areas to hike and trek all around Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The trail I traveled was the Buffalo and Antelope Trail near the nature center on the eastern side of the park. It starts near the Little Niagara swimming area and the nature center. The trail is a well-established gravel walking trail. It is about 1 mile one way from the nature center and follows the Travertine Creek. The first spring I found was Antelope Spring. It emerges directly from the rocks and creates a small stream that flows into the creek. Theres a nice sitting area and the water is nice and cool!

The next area is Buffalo Spring and this spring is much more contained and maintained. The Civilian Conservation Corps from the depression era built up the stone well around the spring. Originally, the buffalo would bathe and wallow in the spring as it bubbled up through the ground. The spring is now encased by stone and flows out on side of the stone sitting area. The area is very tranquil. There were plenty of people sitting and reading and running about when I visited. The forest was quiet and I would recommend a visit to the spring to enjoy a weekend afternoon!

Rusty Nail Winery Tasting Room

After a day out, relaxing with a nice wine sounds delightful. Rusty Nail Winery is a locally owned winery located in the downtown area. The winery produces a variety of wines to fit every palette and the bottle labels feature shoes in some way. Its a great place to sit back and relax after a long day. Grab a bit at the bistro if you are hungry or do a little shopping in the gift shop. Read more about our experience at the Rusty Nail Winery here. Like much Sulphur, Rusty Nail is casual and family friendly.

Chickasaw Retreat And Conference Center

We just got back from an amazing three days camping in the # ...

Overlooking the southern shore on Lake of the Arbuckles is the Chickasaw Retreat and Conference Center. The resort features large, spacious rooms, huge onsite fitness area, indoor pool, hot tub, and spa. There is also an onsite restaurant. The views from this hotel are nothing short of spectacular.

  • King suite sitting area
  • View from the Chickasaw Retreat and Conference Center

I highly recommend a sunset walk around this property. The resort is located on a hill, so you had beautiful views in all directions.

On a past visit, we enjoyed a King Suite which had plenty of space for the five of us. A small kitchenette provides everything we needed to whip up something. Rooms are well appointed and the perfect spot to relax after a day filled with outdoor activity with the kids.

Dont Forget About Travel Insurance

Heading out on the road?

Before you leave for your trip make sure you have a valid Travel Insurance Policy because accidents happen on the road. I have used World Nomads when I travel since 2016, and I happily recommend them.

Getting coverage is important whenever youre more than a hundred miles from home in case of an accident, sickness, theft, etc.

Roman Nose State Park Waterfalls

When you head to Roman Nose State Park near Watonga, you are in for a treat, as you will discover three beautiful, natural spring-fed waterfalls. Big Spring waterfall is where you should start, with the water that flows through a cave.

Middle SpringandLittle Spring waterfalls are beautiful, too, as they fall into the flowing water through the park. It is fairly easy to navigate to the falls in Roman Nose State Park if you look for the Three Springs Trail.

The water temperature is cold most of the year, so you shouldn’t plan on swimming near the falls, but it might be worth dipping your toes into the water on a hot day. Roman Nose State Park sits in a canyon, making the water flow of the falls impressive most times of the year.

If you are making a day of your outing, you should take advantage of the outdoor opportunities near Roman Nose State Park like hiking, biking, fishing, and golf.

Niagara Falls Grand Island Koa

This spectacular Niagara Falls camping destination is located just seven miles from the falls. The KOA includes a variety of kid-friendly amenities, including a two heated pools, a playground, and the ever-popular inflatable jumping pad. Niagara Falls Grand Island offers both pull-thru and back-in RV sites with 30 & 50 amps electricity along with full hookups. Tent campers have the option of selecting a site with water and electric, water only, or no hookups.

The well-connected staff at this KOA offer tour packages to Niagara Falls as well as transportation and ticketing information for several nearby attractions, including Martins Fantasy Land or the surrounding state parks.

You kind of know what to expect at a KOA pool, playground, lodge or rec space, etc but this KOA was also quite clean, a short ride from a fun little amusement park and only a 10-15 min drive from the falls! We had so much fun this was a great family campground. The Dyrt camper Erin H.

Little Niagara Swimming Area

Another great area that I visited but wasnt able to fully enjoy was the Little Niagara swimming area. The Civilian Conservation Corps built several small dams that created pools for people to swim and enjoy the cool waters on warm days. On the day I visited a few people were swimming even with the outside temperature was 75 degrees. If youre ever in Oklahoma on a hot day in the summer, you should swing by Little Niagara and cool down!

Roosevelts New Deal And The Ccc At Platt National Park

Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, shortly after his inauguration. Nicknamed Roosevelts Tree Army, the New Deal program employed 3 million people over its term from 1933 until 1942. In all, 4,500 CCC camps were established to restore or construct national parks, national forests, state and community parks across the country.

Unmarried men from 18 to 25 whose parents were on assistance could join the CCC. Participants earned $30 a month with $25 a month sent home. Participants enrolled for 6 months initially and could renew for 2 years.

Like the work in most CCC projects, Platt National Parks work is organic with a heavy use of local materials. The CCC constructed the majority of the small dams along the rivers to provide natural swimming areas and built trails, pavilions and bridges.

Little Niagara Falls/travertine Island Cultural Landscape

The Little Niagara Falls and Travertine Island area is located in the northeastern portion of the Platt National Park National Historic Landmark District, part of Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma. The landscape covers about 22 acres of wooded land with the Limestone and Travertine Creeks flowing through it, between Cold Springs Campground to the west and the Travertine Nature Center to the east.

In its site planning, style, and design, the area reflects the NPS principles of rustic design. The design of the waterways enhance the natural qualities of the site, and features like picnic areas and swimming holes contribute to the area’s use.

The area contains numerous stone outcroppings, travertine formations, and natural and designed waterfalls. The focal point of the area is Little Niagara Falls and its associated swimming hole, beach, parking lot and comfort station. Nearby is Travertine Island, which is primarily used as a picnic area. Travertine Island has its own associated parking lot and comfort station, as well as a designed picnic area with stone picnic tables and benches. Both areas are accessed from the park Perimeter Road, with the Little Niagara parking area accessed from the south portion of the loop and the Travertine Island lot accessed from the north portion of the loop. Both areas are primarily used for picnicking and swimming.
