Rv Camping Near Teton National Park

The Camping And Rv Opportunities In The Jackson Hole Area Are Simply Amazing

Ep. 72: Grand Teton National Park | Wyoming RV travel camping

With the neighboring forests and national parks, you are sure to be able to find that perfect spot to call home for the night. With RV Parks that offer scenic views of the Grand Teton Mountains or a hot tub , it’s a win-win. Take some time to explore what is waiting for you.

Imagine pulling up to this:

Optional: The Cascade Canyon/paintbrush Canyon Loop

We were tempted to say f*** it and go all in with a two-night, 22-mile loop up Paintbrush Canyon, through the pass, down past Lake Solitude, and through Cascade Canyon to the boat dock, but cramp ons and an ice axe were required and we were SO unprepared. We did the safe thing and saved that portion for another time.

Iâve heard nothing but great things! If you do decide to give the loop a go, pleaseee let me know how it is!

This is another local rec and well worth the scrambles at the end! You wonât find this lake advertised on any national park website. Why? Because itâs not maintained, so itâs good to assume a small level of risk while hiking this portion of the trail. The hike starts from the Lupine Meadows trailhead and heads up the Amphitheater Trail. At mile 3.5, youâll veer right at the fifth switchback and onto an unmarked trail, immediately heading down a few wooden steps. Again, this trail isnât maintained, and itâs important to track your distance to know when to make the turnâitâs easy to miss!

Expect ups and downs with plenty of rocks and a few fallen trees. Donât forget to occasionally take your eyes off your feet and check out the view! Itâs epic!

Brief History Of Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park was originally established in 1929, but it was much smaller than it is today. Fourteen years later, Jackson National Monument was established nearby. In 1950, the two park units were combined to create what we now know as Grand Teton National Park.

Efforts to conserve the park began following the incredibly harsh winter of 1908-1909. A huge die-off of the regions elk population inspired conservation efforts to establish the National Elk Refuge outside of Jackson Hole.

Prior to that, the valley had seen the comings and goings of American Indians, explorers and trappers, homesteaders, and dude ranchers for thousands of years. But until those early explorers arrived in the 1800s, the valleys seasonal harvests were reaped, and possibly sewn by various tribes, including the Shoshone, Bannock, Blackfoot, Crow, Flathead, Gros Ventre, and Nez Perce.

After the Homestead Act of 1862, life in the American West changed dramatically for these tribes. But Jackson Hole was one of the last places to be settled, due in large part to the unforgiving climate and rocky soil.

Still, by the turn of the century, dude ranches dotted the valley and development plodded along in the valley. Because the parks original boundary only protected the high peaks and some lakes in the valley, concerns about over-development began to surface.

How To Get Around Grand Teton National Park

This expansive park covers roughly 310,000 acres, which means towing a vehicle behind your RV is beneficial when it comes to exploring. Of course, if youre towing a travel trailer or toy hauler, youll already have your exploration-ready vehicle once you disconnect.

The park has four road entrances: Grand Canyon, Moose, Moran, and Flagg Ranch. Be aware that several are closed or offer limited access from November through May, so check road statuses before you head to the park.

Heres a little more on these entrances:

  • Grand Canyon Entrance: Might look like the quickest entrance if coming from Utah or Idaho, but is a slow, winding road. It does provide excellent viewpoints if you want to start your visit with a scenic drive. If not, head down to Jackson and up to the Moose Entrance.
  • Moose Entrance: The obvious choice if youre heading north from Jackson Hole.
  • Moran Entrance: Use this entrance if coming from Denver, CO through Dubois, WY
  • Flagg Ranch Information Station: Not technically an entrance, but this is where youll buy a park pass if heading directly south from Yellowstone into Grand Teton.

Once youre in the park, youll need your own vehicle to get around. It will be helpful to to plan for your visit and navigate while youre there. Also, check the Park Services parking page to make sure youll have a safe place to leave your vehicle when youre ready to explore on foot.

Are There Designed Campsites In Spread Creek

In the Spread Creek dispersed camping area, one can find 14 designated campsites. These are located next to a 4-mile gravel road, which makes getting to them easy.

An important thing to mention about these designated campsites is that all of them have a stay limit. You cannot stay in any of these places for more than 5 days.

Now, you may be wondering whats the point of these designated campsites if this is a dispersed camping area? Teton County created them in order to reduce the campers impact on the environment.

One of the best things about these designated campsites is that theyre quite roomy theres enough driving space for most cars and RVs. Moreover, the campsites are spaced far apart, which is always a big plus in my book.

Another great thing about Spread Creek designated campsites is the fact that theyre not far from the main road. In other words, theyre quite easy to access.

Each campsites parking space can easily accommodate about 4 big recreational vehicles. And whats really great here is that you dont have to pay to park your RV, unlike many other RV parks, which often demand around $100 for a night.

Best Review:

Beautiful spot right in the heart of the Tetons! There is plenty of parking and it was not too bad to get our rig there. Take it slow on the road if you have a bigger rig and its still no problem! Lots of places to park near the camping sign that gives you details about the spot and rules that is only about a mile up from the main road. There are more spots further up in the woods but we only walked there. Great place to go for a hike right from the campsite! Very quiet and great views of the entire valley!

What Is The Weather Like In Grand Teton

The West is HIGH and DRY.

The weather in the busy season June, July, August, and September is absolutely gorgeous, with temperatures usually around 70-80 degrees during the day.

But since its high in elevation, nighttime temperatures will get down into the 30s or 40s. So make sure you have a way to stay warm!

Also, its generally arid and dry, so you might want to pack lotion. And even though the temperatures arent typically blazing hot, sunscreen is a good idea if youll do a lot of hiking.

Grand Teton is a year-round park, but the campgrounds are closed in the winter.

If you camp in May or October, it will be cold with a decent chance of snow.
