The great outdoors is a bit more crowded these days. The number of Americans who went camping rose 22% over the last five years, and a record 78.8 million people, many of them younger and more diverse, identified as camping households last year, according to the 2019 North American Camping Report from Kampgrounds of America.

Trends show that a fifth of them prefer shorter trips, fewer than 50 miles from home, especially first-timers or those with young kids. Southern Californias forests and beaches provide good options for quick escapes, places to test your gear and your back-to-nature mettle. Here are seven places that offer a refreshing respite from city life and theyre not so far from the city.

1. Mount Pacifico Campground

Crave something rustic and remote? This spectacular and little-known hike-in campground for backpackers willing to go the distance is located 45 miles north of downtown L.A. on the summit of 7,124-foot Mt. Pacifico in the Angeles National Forest. Relax under the pines, catch superb views of the Mojave Desert to the north, and make tracks on the nearby Pacific Crest Trail, which runs 2,650 miles between Mexico and Canada. This area was heavily burned in 2009s Station fire but has bounced back with grasses and wildflowers.

What People Are Saying About Markin Glen County Park

A SECRET THAT SHOULDN’T BE SHARED (Cheap RV Camping)

Very nice county campground. Well maintained and quiet during our weekend visit in May. About 2/3 of campers were older with not kids. Rest were young couples and families. Sites are concrete pads and are long. There are two large ponds. One has a nice swimming beach. The other offers fishing. There is a paved path that goes around the two ponds. I dont consider it a week long campground but is a great place to stay while visiting family or as a stop off as part of a larger trip. William, Google Review

Florida: Fort Desoto County Park

White sand beaches and palm trees make Fort Desoto County Park a quintessential camping destination in Florida. The park is made up of five islands and campers can boat and swim off the shores surrounding them, exploring stands of mangroves, wetlands, and a diverse ecosystem thats home to over 300 species of birds.

This is one of the best parks anywhere. Its not a National Park surrounding a national treasure but it might as well be. The park has three loops. All have waterfront sites and inner loop sites. One is set up for tents, folding campers and small teardrop style trailers. One is conducive to big rigs but its a tight fit and one handles all, but allows pets. Theres lots of wildlife, particularly raccoons. A short drive or bike ride from the campground lands you at the old fort, or a ferry to Egmont Key for the day, or a beach with a view of Tampa Bay and the Skyway bridge, or the amazing north beach which has been listed several times as the best beach in America. Its a truly gorgeous park. The Dyrt camper David G.Camp Here

Best Rv Park Within 100 Miles

We stayed here for a week during Spring Break and couldn’t be happier. The place was super clean and had some great amenities. A very nice pool, nice little clubhouse where a band played almost every night. The views are unreal and you can just take out and walk up into the mountains from your front door. Very limited cell service and internet but we kinda liked it that way. If you need internet service you can walk to the office where they have some nice work tables and chair to work from.

From check-in to check-out, we had no complaints whatsoever. Our excellent experience started with a very prompt check-in. I was offered several sites but management gave me a recommendation that turned out to be perfect for our rig. The bathroom facilities are ample and clean. Many families were staying here for spring break. It is a friendly “neighborhood” atmosphere. It has plenty of pathways for the kids to ride their bicycles. The full hookup amenities provided good clean A/C power and water. We had no difficulty with the sewer connection. They offer onsite laundry, though we did not use it. It is about 50 miles to Big Bend National Park. There are lots of neat things to explore on FM 170 towards Big Bend Ranch State Park nearby.
