Tesla Model 3 Camping Tent

Camp Mode: Do You Need It

CAMPING IN A TESLA MODEL 3 SR – don’t make these mistakes!

As with any technology there seem to be dissenters. Some Tesla owners, on the Tesla Motor Club site, deemed Camp Mode useless and offered an alternative:

  • Turn off the vehicles lights
  • Set the desired temperature to Keep Climate On
  • Turn on the rear vents. They need to be turned on as they wont turn on automatically
  • Disable/turn off the Walkaway Door Locks option
  • Turn off the vehicles dome lights and Sentry
  • Finally, turn off the Alarm
  • If you open the drivers door you will need to go through all the steps again in manual, not Camp Mode. Use the app on your phone to lock the doors and the screen will turn off.

One of the main benefits of using Camp Mode is that you wont need to go through all the steps above to get the screen to turn off. Some users in the forms opted to cover the screen with a cloth to make it dark enough to comfortably sleep.

Is Camp Mode right for you? It is a personal choice, of course, but it may help you make the decision of, Should I hit the open road this summer, avoid crowds and camp in my Tesla?

Added official video from Tesla regarding Camp Mode.

How Many People Can Stay In A Roof Top Tent

The cargo rack on a Tesla Model 3 has a maximum dynamic weight rating of 195 pounds and a maximum static weight rating of 500 pounds. What this means is that when a traveler is parked for the night, their Tesla will be more than capable of supporting two sleepers.

As long as the total weight does not exceed 500 pounds, they could even fit a third person. Families with two young children could even be within the weight limits for a tesla roof mount. This feature is fantastic for families on a road trip trying to save a few bucks and build some really unique memories.

Some rooftop tents also have a section that sleeps on the ground, allowing more people to rest safe from the elements. These tents are more expensive and require longer setup times than the more common two-person tents, but they are still a viable option for larger groups of travelers. Keep in mind that some campers will be on the ground.

If one were to camp in the bed of the Tesla Cybertruck, they would be able to fit a ridiculous amount of people. Depending on how many campers are in the party, a traveler is probably going to need a specifically designed tent system that adds space via a platform and an overhang or something similar.

    Forget Regular Ground Tents

Rooftop tents have become more popular over the past few years. I first saw one about three years ago on top of a Subaru Crosstrek and was impressed. There are also bed-top tents for trucks, something the Rivian R1T will have as an accessory.

Tesla YouTuber i1Tesla made a video about his camping experience using a rooftop tent. This camping trip was a “shakedown” trip that’s supposed to better prepare him for a much longer excursion to Montana.

Brian, the video presenter, took his modified Tesla Model Y to a camping spot off of Highway 105 in North Carolina. He mentioned he fitted a lift and an “off-road kit” to his Model Y. You’ll also notice he added aftermarket wheels and off-road tires. He also has a neat-looking wrap.

Brian doesn’t explain how to set up the tent, but by looking at the video, it seems pretty easy. Probably easier than a regular ground tent. Rooftop tents have some nice advantages since they’re off the ground. Finding creepy crawlers in your sleeping bag will be less of an issue, and if you’re in an area with dangerous animals roaming around at night, a rooftop tent is definitely a much better idea. It’s also nice in situations when the ground is wet from rain or snow.

One thing he took advantage of was the hard shell of the tent. When he set it up, he faced the hard side of the tent against the cold wind. I’m sure that helped during the cold night he spent in the tent.

What Exactly Is Teslas Camp Mode

The Camp Mode feature lets you to turn your vehicle into a comfortable and breathable car and one in which you can in theory comfortably sleep and camp in.

When you put your vehicle into Camp Mode the cabin will maintain its interior lighting, temperature, airflow and play your music, once youve enabled Camp Mode.

Pressure To Produce Under The Tent

Tesla assembles some of its Model 3s in a tent, known as GA4 in Fremont. Built in spring 2018,it was supposed to be a temporary measure. The idea was to run the tent mostly on manual labor while Tesla perfected its automated factory lines indoors in what’s called “the brick.” The tent has now been operating for more than a year.

Workers told CNBC that GA4 is now able to produce up to 120 cars per shift, across three shifts per day, amounting to 2,160 Model 3s in a perfect six-day week, or around 30,000 per quarter assuming maximum rates of production.

Tesla did not confirm these numbers, but in a statement last year, the company said GA4 was responsible for about 20% of total Model 3 production during a high-output week in July 2018.

While the tented line does not crank out the majority of Tesla’s Model 3s, it still adds significant volume. When Model 3 lines inside the Fremont factory go down, workers in the tent can stay productive. That’s important to Tesla, given its history of over-automation and missed targets.

In the tent, Model 3s are put together using manual labor and power tools, lifts and conveyors, but not with any of the sophisticated robotics Tesla uses on the indoor assembly lines. Workers say they do one process at their station repeatedly, usually walking along the line with the car until they’re done.

Six current and former employees supported their accounts of work in GA4 but asked to remain unidentified.

Why Use A Roof Top Tent Instead Of Camp Mode

Tesla has made an initiative to make their electric vehicles convenient and comfortable for get-aways and road trips. The Camp Mode feature allows the occupants to access the batterys power for temperature control, music, and other helpful features. This feature is great for quick naps or breaks but not a long nights sleep.

When one puts the seats down and inflates a travel mattress, they can enjoy a comfortable night in the car, but is that really camping? Nothing really beats sleeping in the night air under a blanket of stars, but surely that is fodder for a hot debate, so consider these objective setbacks to this feature:

    • Not convenient for those with more luggage
    • Limits travelers to staying in the car
    • Will only accommodate two sleepers

When one travels, they are going to have luggage, sometimes far too much. Consider traveling in the Tesla Model Y, which has a hatchback and a small front trunk for a little more added storage space. To lay the seats flat and put out an inflatable mattress, one will first have to move their luggage and rearrange everything.

Having a rooftop tent set up will ensure that a traveler has more than enough room to stretch out after a long day of exploring. In the Model Y, one will be able to stow their luggage in the cargo bay and camping gear in the front compartment without having to tediously shuffle everything around every night that you stop to rest.

TL DR: If you think outside of the box, you can sleep 4 with full climate control for a cost of 10-12% battery usage per night, even in freezing temperatures.

When we bought our Tesla Model Y in December, the intent was to roughly recreate the experiences of our trusty 1971 VW Bus, but in electric form.

With all the cargo space, and the availability of great mattress options, such as the Tesmat, one can get pretty close to a passenger-van conversion. What one cannot simulate easily however, is the 4-person sleeping experience one can get from a pop-up tent. The Tesla Model Y can only comfortably fit 2 adults, or 1 adult & two children.

The best option I’ve found for sleeping 4 is the Napier SUV Sportz Tent This gargantuan tent attaches easily to the back of a Tesla Model Y, but it is a bit heavy and bulky to pack up. The biggest plus side to this option is that you can still run the Camp Mode on the Tesla Model Y to heat the tent: which is something we tested this weekend.

Using Camp Mode to climate control the Napier tent is a party trick that is mostly only useful in extreme temperatures. In my experience, Camp Mode on the Tesla Model Y consumes ~10% battery life when set to 67’F with a 40’F exterior temperature, and the trunk closed.

My primary concern was power consumption due to the lack of insulation: tents are typically nowhere near as insulated as a Tesla. How much power would we waste by adding the tent?

    Exposed To The Elements

Exposure to the elements in GA4 poses another problem for the workers.

Six current and recent Tesla employees said GA4 workers have repeatedly asked Tesla’s environmental health and safety teams to help with cold temperatures overnight, sweltering heat during the days, and pests including mice and bugs in the tent.

They say workers commonly deal with heat rash and heat exhaustion.

Tesla installed big fans in GA4 to distribute heat and circulate air. However they are not on consistently, these people said, and usually don’t make a big difference.

Tesla said its environmental health and safety team monitors temperatures to ensure they are within a comfortable range for the safety of employees, production equipment and car parts. They also said they provide temperature controls like cool fans, hydration, rest breaks and heat stress awareness training to employees.

Hot, dry conditions can also lead to problems with air quality.

Correspondence reviewed by CNBC shows that Tesla required GA4 workers to report for duty even as wildfire smoke floated up from the massive Camp Fire that devastated Northern California in November. On Nov. 9, the day after the Camp Fire ignited, the AirNow Air Quality Index rated Fremont at an “unhealthy” 165, and continued in the unhealthy range for at least another week.

Tesla says it offered air filter masks who those who wanted them and provided face masks every day as a precautionary measure.

    Tesla Model 3 Inside Info

One of the most interesting bits in the article, though, was this blurb right here:

The Model 3 seats will fold flat, and the storage well at the bottom of the trunk will have a leveling cover, similar to the setup on the Model S, according to the person familiar with the final design. However, the flat bed on the compact Model 3 is long enough to accommodate only someone who is about 5 1/2 feet long, stretched out. Anyone much taller than that would need to bend their knees or sleep at an angle.

Intriguing. It doesnt sound at first as though itd be too comfortable for anyone with any real height to them, but Ill wait to make up my mind on the matter.

Are any reservation holders reading this going to give it a try?
