We encourage anyone who loves the Blue Ridge region to learn about the Leave No Trace principles of responsible environmental stewardship.

Stay on marked trails, take only pictures, pack out your trash, and be considerate of others who share the trails and parks you explore.

Remember that waterfalls and rocky summits can be dangerous. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie.

When you’re exploring the wilderness, it’s better to be safe than to be a statistic!

Kayak Or Paddleboard On Unicoi Lake

Not only do I love being in the presence of lakes, but my other favorite thing to do on them is stand up paddle boarding. I havent found an outdoor activity that offers me as much Zen as silently paddling across a calm lake.

Paddling on Unicoi Lake was sublime with its pretty reflections, mountain backdrop and water so clear I could see sunken trees and giant fish swimming past.

Craig and the girls paddled beside me in their kayaks. Then we switched all of them out for a leg-pumping workout on the four-person Pontoon Pedal Boats.

You can rent kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and pedal boats from the Visitor Center.

One family activity we loved experiencing on our Georgia state parks road trip was archery so much that the girls have asked us to find an archery course in Raleigh for them.

Unfortunately, due to the thunderstorm we missed the 3-D Archery Range within Unicoi, but again well be back!

The Archery & Air Gun Range is a shooting facility that is set up for static archery target practice, 3-D archery target practice and air gun rifle target practice.

Unicoi State Park Georgia

Episode:28 Unicoi State Park & Helen, Georgia RV Camping & Horse Back Riding In Fall Colors #Unicoi

Unicoi State Park is one of the most popular parks in Georgia. Some of the many reasons why it attracts so many visitors includes the parks outstanding natural beauty, a wide range of amenities, and Unicoi State Park’s proximity to the alpine village of Helen.

Smith Lake, often called Unicoi Lake, is the scenic centerpiece of the park. There are opportunities to fish, swim and enjoy a picnic here. Smith Creek is situated above and below the lake and trout fishermen are often found in its waters. Both the lake and creek are subject to the state of Georgia fishing regulations. You must follow the state’s licensing and catch requirments.

The park’s location in the mountains of north Georgia means there are plenty of other areas around the park where you can enjoy the outdoors. The park borders the Chattahoochee National Forest. Anna Ruby Falls Scenic Area , where on can access the trailhead to Anna Ruby Falls, is found just outside the park.

See The Beautiful Anna Ruby Falls

It didnt take long on the short hiking trail to the Anna Ruby Falls for me to mark it as one of my favorite waterfalls in the USA.

The trail through the lush verdant forest past the meandering, full-flowing and cascading Smith Creek was enough for me to know this place was special.

Its special enough to be protected from within the Chattahoochee National Forest and designated as the Anna Ruby Falls National Recreation Area. It borders the Unicoi State Park, which gives you easy access to visit. In fact, you must go through Unicoi State Park to get to the Visitors Center at the falls.

Anna Ruby Falls is a double waterfall. At 150 feet above, the Curtis Creek and York Creek come thundering down the cliff face and merge together at the bottom to form Smith Creek, .

It is an impressive sight and a waterfall vista you wont forget.

If the one mile return trail is not enough for you, you can hike the 5 miles from Anna Ruby Falls back to Unicoi Lodge.

However you choose to experience it, Anna Ruby Falls is a must when exploring the North Georgia mountains.

Entering Unicoi State Park

There is no gated entrance to the park. The main road through the most visited portion of the park is a loop formed by two roads, state highway GA-356 and “Unicoi Campground Road.” GA-356 passes over the impoundment that forms Smith Lake. There is a parking area at either end of the impoundment. From Unicoi Campground Road you can access the camping office, the campgrounds, the road to Anna Ruby Falls, and most of the parking areas, picnic facilities, and restrooms.

Visitors to Unicoi State Park are required to pay a $5per-vehicle day use fee. You can also purchase an annual pass for $50. Each of the many parking areas in the park has a self-service fee box where you can pay the $5 fee and obtain a pass to hang from the mirror of your vehicle.

You do not need to pay the Unicoi park fee if you are only passing through Unicoi to get to Anna Ruby Falls – which is a federal facility that charges its own entrance fee. The fee and pass for Anna Ruby Falls is not valid for Unicoi State Park. If you visit both Anna Ruby and Unicoi, you need to pay two different fees.

Smith Creek Hiking Trail

Unicoi Full Hookup Site

This moderate 8.4-mile trail takes you all the way from the Unicoi State Park Lodge to the main trail at Anna Ruby Falls and back, with stunning scenery all along the way.

Its a picturesque walk through the national forest, with several creek crossings along the way and an elevation gain of approximately 1,663 feet.

Dogs are allowed on leashes, and the trail is especially beautiful in spring and early summer, when North GA wildflowers and rhododendrens are in bloom.

But because its not a hugely popular trail, its not as well maintained as others in the area. So dont be surprised if you have to clamber over a fallen tree or two, or work your way through some overgrown sections.

Note that this trail was closed temporarily due to COVID-19 in July 2020, so its a good idea to contact the park about its current status before planning your hike.

Unicoi Lake Loop Trail

Easily the most popular Unicoi State Park hiking trail, this 2.2-mile loop meanders its way around Unicoi Lake , with lots of scenic overlooks along the way.

The portion that goes along the dam and road takes away from the trails natural appeal, so we started from our Barrel Cabin and worked our way counterclockwise around the lake.

The trail is wide and well-maintained, and dogs are allowed on leashes. Along the way youll see zipline stations, fishing docks, and very little elevation, making it a lovely morning walk.

This trail can get quite busy on weekends during the summer. But when we visited there was virtually nobody there, and the walk was positively blissful!

Georgias Adventure Lodge: Unicoi State Park

The name Unicoi comes from the Cherokee word, unega, meaning white. As the state park stands on the original Unicoi Trail a trading path that connected Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia its assumed that Unicoi refers to place of the white man, or the white mans road.

Its where European traders swapped axes, guns and cloth with remote Cherokee villages for furs, deer skins and ginseng.

However, it is said the name could also refer to the white fog of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Only two miles from the Alpine Village of Helen in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, Unicoi State Park & Lodge is one of the most popular and loved state parks in Georgia.

This 1,050-acre state park is centered around beautiful Lake Unicoi within the Chattahoochee National Forest.

This is more than a state park with a few hiking trails and the lodge is known as one of Georgias Adventure Lodges for a reason!

Unicoi offers memorable experiences like paddle boarding, 3-D archery, fly fishing, an adrenaline-pumping zip line course, and a nearby spectacular waterfall.
