Our family has enjoyed the Long Pine Key Campground for almost a week now. The campground is very clean. Unlike Flamingo, Long Pine has trees and shrubs that offer a little shade and privacy. I’d recommend a site on the outside of the loops so that you have pine forest behind your site. The bathrooms were clean. There is a big sink outside the bathrooms for washing dishes. The evening ranger talks were very interesting. There is a trail system around the campground that is worth checking out to see the rare tree snails. Note that there are no showers, but we still preferred it over Flamingo. There are mosquitos though less than we saw at the Flamingo area. All in all a great base for an Everglades adventure.

And while it may seem like were stating the obvious, lets talk about how to actually go camping in the Everglades. Unless youre taking a road trip through Florida, its not so easy to just pull off the side of the road somewhere, or find a last-minute campground in the middle of the Everglades. First off, hours of operation at Park Offices and campgrounds are highly seasonal and staffing may be limited or wear many hats. The old adage Gone Fishing may often be true in the Everglades!
Fun fact about the Everglades: it is thousands of acres of vast wilderness with various unique habitats. As a result, there are several ways to go Everglades camping and experience this wilderness, as we outline below.

For those who dont have an RV or camper, Southern Comfort offers cabins on rent, but for those who do have RVs, there are excellent camping options on a daily, weekly as well as a monthly basis. Smudge pots weren’t in sight when I visited Flamingo on the southern tip of Everglades National Park, but it was early spring and the mosquitoes hadn’t quite worked themselves up to scourge strength. They are legendary when in full biting force, with rumors of cows and mules being killed by vicious, insatiable swarms of the bloodsuckers. And yet, the appeal of Flamingo to anglers and those fleeing winter’s cold for a few days make it a popular destination.
To Everglades Superintendent Pedro Ramos, Flamingo can be a world-class destination once suitable lodging is available, and that lodging slowly is returning.
There had been lodging in the not-too-distant past at Flamingo, an ironically named place in that there really are few if any flamingos to be seen here. As the story goes, when a post office was built here in 1893 the few year-round locals thought “Flamingo” sounded better than “End of the World.” Flamingos had been in the habit of wintering in the area back in the 1800s, but they seldom are seen there these days.

The tents opened to the public last October, near the end of the hurricane season that typically runs from June 1 to November 1, and occupancy “has been quite high,” said Condella. “They’re well received by anyone who stays in them at the moment.”

Those camping in an RV will have plenty of options just outside Everglades National Park. RV campgrounds are conveniently located near all of the entrances to the national park. Weve outlined your best bets for RV camping near the Everglades below.
The Chokoloskee Island Park Campground is located on Chokoloskee Island, just a few minutes from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center. This is a unique campground that provides the opportunity to stay on a small island adjacent to the Everglades. Chokoloskee Island Park can accommodate tents and RVs up to 30 in length, and each site has water, sewer and electric hookups available.

Backcountry Campsites Near Everglades National Park
Wilderness camping and beach camping are a fun way to set up camp near the ocean and wake with the sound of waves. There are three types of backcountry campsites in the Everglades:
- Chickee Sites: Elevated wood platforms with roofs where you can place a free-standing tent. These rise above the rivers and bays where dry land isnt always accessible. Chickee sites are perfect for paddlers and canoe campers.
- Ground Sites: These are located along the interior bays and rivers. They tend to have the most bugs out of the backcountry sites.
- Beach Campsites: Set on the coast, beach campsites are best for avoiding insects and getting sunset views of the ocean. During late spring and summer, sea turtles and crocodiles come to nest on the beach so watch out! There are also no bathrooms located on the beach.
Wilderness camping permits are free in the summer months and only $15 for processing + $2 per person on the other nights. Permits are required for all backcountry campsites, but you can pick them up same-day at the Flamingo and Gulf Coast Visitor Centers.

Florida State Park camping cabins are a way to enjoy state parks without needing a tent or camper.
Sometimes an avid camper just yearns to get off the floor of a tent. Or they may get tired of the monthly payments of an RV, the hassle of storing it, and the maintenance.
But camping fever is still in their blood, and camping cabins may be the answer.
20 Florida State Parks have comping cabins, and they range from rustic to modern.
We provide a location map and contact information for all these parks later in this article.
They may not be as fancy as most chain motels or hotels, but you can enjoy being in a quiet state park.
Enjoy a cabin nestled in the hills of Central Florida where you can lounge by the fireplace, or kick back and relax on your cabins deck in the Florida Keys.
No matter what the destination, staying in a cabin will provide endless opportunities for recreation and relaxation.
Some of these cabins are as well equipped as the average motel room in the outside world. Others are a bit more rustic and primitive.

Reservations can be made as long as 11 months in advance, and should always be made within 2 days of your planned arrival.

Plan Your Wilderness Trip
Wilderness permits are required for all overnight camping in the backcountry.Campers can make advanced reservations through Recreation.gov. Advanced reservations are available on a rolling basis, three months in advance of the start date.Proof of digital reservations / permits or printouts are allowed for the Flamingo and Key Largo areas only. Wilderness permits must still be picked up in-person at the Gulf Coast Visitor Center no sooner than 24 hours in advance of your trip. Wilderness permits can be picked up between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm year-round . Reservations are not required for wilderness permits. Campers may still pick up a permit in-person at the Gulf Coast or Flamingo* Visitor Centers on a first-come, first-served basis. Permits cannot be obtained sooner than 24 hours in advance of the start of the trip. *Check hours and days of operation. There is a $21 administrative fee plus an additional $2 per person, per night use fee. The costs will apply for advanced reservations and walk-up permits year-round. A credit card is needed for both online and in-person permit reservations.Remember: Most wilderness campsites are only accessible by water. Use the Wilderness Trip Planner to ensure you are fully prepared for your trip.
Rv Camping In Everglades National Park
While they dont comprise the entirety of the Everglades, the National Park is more synonymous with the region than in name alone. With the protection that a national park affords, its provided plenty of opportunity for soaring bald eagles, fishing herons, wading crocodiles and a not-so-small army of mosquitos to thrive.
Though many an Everglades camper will never cross paths with an alligator or crocodile and find nothing but beauty in the flapping wings of some 350 species of birds that inhabit the areaits the mosquitos that will perhaps leave the most memories . Thus, its more than essential to be prepared with long clothing, repellent, a well-sealed rig and the proper frame of mind.
If you can brave those little biting buggers, though, Everglades National Park has two proper campgrounds fit for RVs of nearly all sizes. Long Pine Key is a first-come, first-served campground nearer the parks entrance, while Flamingo Campground is certainly the more frequented, and requires a beautiful trek through the park itself to arrive within.

Cabins And Chickee Huts
1. Native Chickee Cabins at Trail Lakes Campground, 40904 Tamiami Trail E, Ochopee
Want to immerse yourself in the Everglades for a night or two? There are two elevated chickee huts with thatched roofs at the Trail Lakes Campground that are perfect for those looking for a stay in the Everglades! The huts are styled after the original Seminole chickee huts.
When you dont have your own tent or camping gear with you, but you still want a unique overnight experience , these chickees offer a quiet camp surrounded by nature. The Chickee cottage with solar fixtures and shutter windows has views of the swamp and open grasslands. Neither of the two chickee huts have running water, but situated restrooms and hot showers are nearby at the Trail Lakes Campground bathhouse.
Chickee huts have great big decks and are a great opportunity for large families and groups to set up their own camp.

Camping Near Everglades National Park
Given the popularity and scarcity of options, it is always possible that you wont be able to find a campground within Everglades National Park. However, dont give up as there are plentiful camping options just outside the National Park boundary!
Many of these nearby campgrounds can be found in Big Cypress National Preserve, located just north of Everglades National Park.
