Lake Superior State Forest Campground

Shanna HNice, but bad bathroomsThe campground is very nice, with pretty trails from each site leading to the beach. The beach has a lot of large driftwood and logs. The one major drawback is these are the worst vault toilets I have ever experienced. I’ve camped at many places around the country, and have never encountered bathrooms like these. You seriously can’t even breathe in them.aubrey_25_99We love this place!Quiet and secluded and right on a beautiful lake! There is a boat launch and many places to drag kayaks, canoes, and other small watercraft to the lake. It has many nice, large lots and can accommodate larger campers/motorhomes, which is unusual for a rustic campground. It has a nice, open feeling about it, as the forest surrounding the camp has been thinned to perfection. It is right on the North Country Trail if hiking is your thing, and it is centrally located to both the Paradise and Newberry areas, and all the tourist attractions that they offer. It is also just down the road from the Crisp Point lighthouse and is located about a mile from the mouth of the Little Two Hearted River. County Road 500 can be a bit rough after it rains, but the road is maintained often . PLEASE NOTE: The map marker on this site is NOWHERE NEAR where this campground is actually located, and the campground only has 12 sites, not 22 as stated here. If you google map it, it will show you the real location.Megan RLakefront Camping!Bruce DSuydamlbingamanPetoskey_MIJon H

Negwegon State Park: Harrisville Michigan

If you dont mind roughing it a bit, consider one of the primitive hike-in campsites at Negwegon State Park. This is a wild park on Lake Hurons western shore, and this magical Great Lakes camping spot is the most secluded and rustic on our list. The park encompasses more than 4,000 acres of woodland, sandy beaches, and hiking trails. Its also a designated dark sky preserve, so come prepared to stay up late! Trails are all easy to moderate, meandering along the shore and through mature pine forests and meadows.

Four hike-in campsites are available between April and November. The campsites are located approximately 1.1 to 2.2 miles from the main parking lot off Sand Hill Trail. Each campsite is equipped with a pit toilet, fire ring with a cooking grate on top, picnic table, bear pole , and a backcountry privy. Potable water is available at the flowing well located between the parking lot and the beach. Sites can also be accessed via the water by boat as they are located along the shoreline of Lake Huron.

What we love about camping at Negwegon State Park: No campground just you and a beautiful spot on the shore! Sunrises are amazing here as well!Something to consider: The roads are often covered with sand, so a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended.

Best Camping & Campgrounds

Twelve mile beach

Camping in the Eastern UP – go here –. For rustic campgrounds, we like those in Pictured Rocks. Although more expensive, the campground at Tahquamenon Falls is a good choice if you have time to enjoy the recreational amenities. We believe the best value, for both tent and RV camping with showers, is the Grand Marais municipal campground on the shores of Lake Superior.
