A Brief Introduction To Harrington Beach State Park

Mirror Lake State Park is a 2,179-acre Wisconsin state park in the Wisconsin Dells region. The process of establishing the park began in 1962 and the park officially opened on August 19, 1966. It contains Mirror Lake, a narrow reservoir with steep sandstone sides up to 50 feet tall. The lake has a surface area of 137 acres and an average depth of 10 to 14 feet . Recessed out of the wind, the water of Mirror Lake is usually calm and often as glassy-smooth as a mirror, hence the name. Situated in a major tourist area, the state park has an extensive campground and other visitor amenities. Also located within the park is the Seth Peterson Cottage, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building available for public rental.

Another popular park among Wisconsinites, Devils Lake, delivers with incredible views, an endless range of outdoor activities, amenities, and a great location in the city of Wisconsin Dells, which is close to the state capital of Madison. Two large sandy beaches, 29 miles of trails, boat rentals, rock climbing, mountain biking, and backcountry hiking will keep every visitor engaged. A nature center, store, and concessions are available. The campgrounds offer a range of sites with electricity. Larger rigs can be accommodated, but be aware that site ground cover and levelness vary. The campground does get busy and reservations are required, so try to visit midweek. But even with a crowd, its easy to escape into nature in this sprawling park.

The Jim and Gwen Plunkett Observatory was dedicated on July 21, 2007. The observatory has a 20-inch telescope that weighs over 2000 pounds. The telescope is designed to provide an extremely stable platform for instrumentation. The telescope accommodates four foci: two Newtonian, one Cassegrain and one Coude. The telescope is named for its primary benefactors, Alvin and Hilda Panarusky.

A unique feature of the observatory is the roll-off roof design. The roof rolls off of the building on heavy rails, exposing the full sky.
