South Mountain Recreation Area
South Mountain State Park stretches 40 miles along the ridge of South Mountain from the Potomac River east of Harpers Ferry to the Pennsylvania state line. The entire length of the Maryland section of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail runs through the parks 13,000 acres. Hikers enjoy the vistas at White Rock, High Rock, Annapolis Rock and Weverton Cliffs from the trail. The large park surrounds Gathland, Washington Monument and Greenbrier state parks, as well as South Mountain State Battlefield, but most of South Mountain can only be reached on foot. Parking areas at the smaller parks provide access to the trails for backpackers and day-trippers.

Civil War buffs might consider traveling the short distance to the two additional battlefields located near Harpers Ferry.
Antietam National Battlefield is 6 miles from Harpers Ferry and marks the site of the bloodiest battle in American history.
Monocacy National Battlefield is 23 miles from Harpers Ferry and marks the site of the Civil War battle that saved Washington, D.C., from the Confederacy.
History Of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
The history of this Park is rich and exciting, just like the park itself, involving a considerable number of prominent people and key events that changed the course of history.
From Robert Harper in the 1740s to the last President of Storer college in the 1950s, numerous people traveled through Harpers Ferry on journeys towards freedom, exploration, and defense of a young nation and left their mark on the place.
Thomas Jefferson noted the mesmerizing beauty of the Harpers Ferry during his visit in 1783.
George Washington realized the commercial importance of the area and established a National Armory in Harpers Ferry in 1794.
From 1861-1865, Harpers Ferry witnessed its first successful application of exchangeable manufacture, the arrival of the first American railroad, John Browns slave rebellion, and the biggest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War.
In 1944, the federal government began to prioritize the places of national interest and authorized Harpers Ferry as a national monument which later became a national park in 1963.
Today, the park holds several museums and historical sites from the 19th century that attracts more than half a million visitors annually from all over the world.

Weatherof Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
This Park enjoys a pleasant temperate climate throughout the year.
The highest average temperature of 63 o F with July being the only time of the year when the temperature rises to 100 o F. January is the coldest month with 40 o F.
Extreme weather events can sometimes lead to the flooding in Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, so make sure to check the current weather forecast before visiting.
River Riders Harpers Ferry Campground
People who arrange a trip with River Riders in Harpers Ferry are welcome to use its primitive campground. Sites are available for both tents and RVs, but there are no hookups. The campground is on the Potomac in a deep-water area and can be accessed from the river. Campsites accommodate four people. River Riders guides lead rafting and tubing trips, canoeing, fishing and biking expeditions and conduct team building exercises. In 2012, River Riders began offering a 60-element challenge course.

Huckleberry Hill Campground At The Chesapeake And Ohio Canal Maryland
Closer to Harpers Ferry is a walk-in campsite called Huckleberry Hill. Its accessible from Harpers Ferry Road along the canal path, which is only 3 miles from town and about one mile from the closest parking area. A water pump and toilets are provided as well.
From Huckleberry Hill, visitors can walk along the river to its confluence with the Shenandoah and cross a footbridge into Harpers Ferry. The footbridge is attached to railroad trestles that disappear through a Maryland tunnel. Above the tunnel is Maryland Heights, where Union sharpshooters picked off rebels who claimed the town at various times during the war. Several museums in town document Maryland Heights’ violent era.

Things To Do In Harpers Ferry: St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church
Built in 1833, St. peters Roman Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry is one of the most beautiful churches in the region, largely in part due to its location. Located high above the town, the church boasts an incredible sweeping view of the surrounding area, including the gorge of the Shenandoah and its confluence with the Potomac. Throughout history, St. Peters Roman Catholic Church has been altered to change its architectural style, and was the only church in Harpers Ferry to survive the Civil War. Visitors to the area can attend a weekly mass on Sundays at 11am if they wish, or visit the church another time to catch some incredible history and gorgeous views.

Appalachian Trail Conservancy Harpers Ferry Wv
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy works hard to protect, preserve, and manage the land of and surrounding the famous Appalachian Trail, so that its incredible beauty can be enjoyed by hikers and visitors for generations to come. The ATC was founded in 1925, and since then has worked tirelessly through groups of dedicated volunteers and staff to maintain and care for the 2,190 miles of trail from Maine to Georgia. The ATCs headquarters is located in Harpers Ferry, which is also roughly the midpoint of the entire trail, so hikers love to get their photo taken in front of the visitors center as a milestone of their journey, and visitors can see these photos in the ATCs thru-hiker album.

Appalachian National Scenic Trail
Once youve taken a couple shorter tours, take a walk on the wild side by strolling along the midpoint section of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail , which conveniently passes through Harpers Ferry. The AT Conservancy headquarters is right in town, so stop in for directions and advice about where to walk and what to look for.
There is plenty of water on the trail, and just a few miles in either direction, you can cross over a state line into either Maryland or Virginia, then head back for that cold beer or hot cocoa back in town. To escape the crowds, camp for the night in one of the trails shelters before heading back to Harpers Ferry to see the rest of what the area has to offer.

Bike Or Walk Through The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park
Visitors can bike or walk along the towpath of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Just cross the footbridge over the Potomac River below mile marker 61 on the towpath. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal once transported lumber, agricultural products, and coal to market and runs from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland. While the canal is no longer in use, some locks and houses remain as reminders of the industrial age.
The surface of the towpath is flat and made of crushed gravel, making riding easy for bicyclists. The scenic views and sounds of nature along the path will soothe your senses. Be on the lookout for birds and other animals.

See John Browns Fort And The John Brown Wax Museum
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, John Browns Fort is where an attempt to seize the Harpers Ferry federal arsenal took place. Brown hated slavery, and this was his effort to start an armed insurrection of abolitionists and enslaved people. Captured in this house, Brown was later hanged.

There is no room for camping with an RV at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park itself. Fortunately, this area sees a lot of campers and visitors, so it offers numerous campgrounds and RV parks that know how to make you feel at home.
The Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday is located right near town. This camp is open year-round, and it welcomes pets. It also provides a game room, ball courts, a movie theatre, and a mini-golf course for campers. This is in addition to typical services such as WiFi, cable, and a laundry facility.
Harpers Ferry Campground offers riverside sites. This also means it provides easy water access for any river-based activities you’re interested in. Electric hookups are also provided, as are bathrooms and showers. As there are a large number of places to visit nearby, many people enjoy RV camping near Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, so you should have no trouble locating any services you may be needing.
Washington Monument State Park
The first monument dedicated to President George Washington is the highlight of Washington Monument State Park , 18 miles north of Harpers Ferry. Built in one day 1827 and rebuilt by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936, the conical memorial rises 30 feet on the ridge of South Mountain. The unobstructed view from the top provides 360-degree panoramas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. A museum at the park, open seasonally, has exhibits related to the Battle of South Mountain and the building of the monument. Washington Monument State Park has a youth camping area, but most of the park is reserved for day use activities like picnicking and hiking.
