I like to pile all of the food on the dining room table. I check it off the list as I pack it into a sturdy, washable food tub. We use a 14 gallon Rubbermaid tub.
For backpacking, of course, you’ll pack much more lightly. Calculate exactly what you will eat on each day, and pack only those items. Here are some backpacking food ideas.

Hiking Snacks And Leave No Trace
We have a feeling were preaching to the choir here, but this is very important, so listen up:
PACK OUT EVERYTHING YOU HIKE IN.
This obviously applies to wrappers.
And yes, this applies to apple cores, orange peels, pistachio shells, and all the other stuff that people think, Oh, its natural, itll just decompose so I can throw it into the woods.
Heres why thats not a good idea: Animals that are not meant to ever come in contact with banana peels, for instance, may start eating them. Hey, it smells appetizing, after all! This can become a big problem, not only for their digestive systems , but also because over time, fruit peels can start attracting wildlife to come closer to the trails and have more human interaction than is safe for both the animal and for people.
Its not that difficult to put your apple core into a bag and dispose of it properly.
Our advice: Pack a baggie! When hiking, we usually bring a silicone baggie with us to keep our fruit peels for composting later. Its also handy for any wrappers, twist ties, etc.

How Many Calories Do I Need On A Hike
The answer to this question is going to vary significantly based on many factors including your height and weight, plus the type of hike youre attempting. For instance, hiking a .5-mile loop that is relatively flat is going to require a significantly lower amount of energy than a 10-mile trek with an elevation gain of 1,500 feet.
According to experts, 200 300 calories per hour is a good ballpark figure.
How to calculate: Calculate how many hours you plan to hike, and go on the higher end of the calorie count if you expect it to be difficult terrain.
For instance, if youre planning to hike for 4 hours on a very difficult trail, youll want to be factoring at least 300 calories per hour . This means your snacks should equate to a minimum of 1,200 calories in order to sustain your energy level.
But it should be noted that all calories are not created equal. Youll want to be sure youre packing hiking snacks that have the right nutritional balance of complex carbs, healthy fats, sugars, and proteins, as described above.
