The campground is tucked away at the northern end of the park, offering a slew of RV and tent sites along the beach all year round. Each RV site has water and electrical hook-ups, while some also have private picnic tables and can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet in length. If youre looking for a true Georgia beach camping experience, then youll have to forego the RV and pick up a tent. However, when spending time at Cumberland Island National Seashore, the reward will be well worth the effort.

Only accessible by ferry or boat, Cumberland Island National Seashore lies six miles east of St. Marys on the Georgia-Florida border. With more than 50 miles of trails and 18 miles of beach, this is an outdoor lovers paradise. However, the only amenities youll find here are restrooms and water fountains. You have to bring whatever else you need.

You can find five campgrounds here. Sea Camp is the only one that provides drinkable water. Youll have to hang your food at the three wilderness campgrounds. You should plan on bringing backpacking gear no matter which of the five campgrounds you choose.

Skidaway Island State Park Campground

Skidaway Island State Park is an awesome place to visit for the day to go hiking, but you can extend your visit here with a stay at the Skidaway Island State Park Campground. There are 87 tent, trailer, and RV campsites at this state park, which spans 588 acres of land and also have three cabins. The camping area for RVs has sewer hookups and allows pets. You can use the playgrounds and outdoor fitness equipment while camping here and hiking the six miles of trails. Wi-Fi is available at the park office but not the campground.

The Lotts Island Campground & Marina is situated at the Hunter Army Airfield and is an excellent area to camp for troops, veterans, or those who are somehow connected to the military. This campsite is available all year round and takes bookings up to 90 days ahead of time. Pets are permitted as long as they are kept on a leash and are cleaned up after. A breathtaking marina with boat spaces and a fishing pier are also available in the vicinity.

Whats the Word: Steve on Campendium says, Red Gate will be our go-to camping spot for all of our future Savannah visits. It was an easy 5-10 minute drive to the Savannah Visitors Center. The family run farm was clean and had a wonderful staff. It was interesting and beautiful. Our dogs loved the farm animals. The wi-fi was fast and consistently strong.

At Fort McAllister State Park, youll be surrounded by giant live oaks that have been around for hundreds of years. Unlike other campgrounds near Savannah, GA, this location is also a historic siteUnion General William Tecumseh Sherman was stopped here on his incendiary march to the sea after burning down Atlanta.

Historical reminders are prevalent at Fort McAllister, which features cannons, a hot shot furnace, bulletproof barracks, and a Civil War Museum, among other attractions. Not a history buff? The campsite is also a beautiful part of the Georgia landscape, and sits right on the banks of the Ogeechee River.

Normally there are 67 tent, trailer, and RV sites available for reservation at Fort McAllisters campground, but at the time of writing, only 41 are available while upgrades to 100 AMP service are underway. The park also offers seven cabins built on stilts for an immersive marsh camping experience. Two backcountry camping sites are accessible via a 1.5 mile hike.
