The Oregon coast tends to be pretty wet and cold so make sure you pack layers and good rain gear. We love how rugged Oregons coastline is and driving highway 101 from Fort Stevens all the way down to Harris Beach will give you plenty of opportunities to explore lighthouses, cheese factories, a zoo where you can pet baby lion cubs, cool water features like Devils Punchbowl, and sand dunes galore.

When is the best time to visit Oregon?
It is amazing in the summer but crowds on the trails and campgrounds can be a bit much. We really enjoy the fall because it is much less crowded and the weather is still great.
Whats the water temperature at the beach or lakes?
The oceans never really gets warm, however if you are just walking its fine. If you plan on surfing or going into the ocean make sure you have your wetsuit. Lakes can be chilly but great for fishing, kayaking or SUPing. During the summer months it is very normal to float rivers in inner tubes.

For Fishing And Swimming: Walton Lake Campground

Looking to spend the weekend lounging by a pristine forest lake? Look no further than Walton Lake Campground. In the heart of the Ochoco National Forest, this campground is perched on the edge of the beautiful Lake Walton. Surrounded by old-growth ponderosa pines, the lake offers a whole host of activities. Rainbow trout and catfish run rampant in the remote waters, making it a perfect place to fish. If boating is your thing, the boat ramp makes it easy to launch out onto the lake. A sandy beach is the cherry on top, its the perfect place to lounge after taking a dip in the water. The campground offers tent and RV sites, vault toilets, and drinking water.
What a sweet place, it was nearly full when we stayed, but still felt as though we were in the woods camping, spaces spaced apart, quiet, beautiful lake, many fishermen, my daughter swam in the Lake, and we took a short hike for a beautiful view. The Dyrt camper Lauren B.
Best Campgrounds Oregon #: Devils Lake
Personally I think the draw to staying here is the quick access to the hip town of Lincoln City. There is a lot happening here from taking a tour of glass blowing to having a bonfire on the beach, this is a fun town to stay at for a few days.
There are some really cool trails nearby, but accessing them does require driving down dirt roads and while you dont really need four wheel drive, a high clearance vehicle is a good idea. If you love boating, skiing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking then camping at Devils Lake will certainly meet your needs.
Note: If you are just driving through, there is free camping at the Chinook Casino in Lincoln City.

Best Campgrounds Oregon #: Steelhead Falls
Another great spot for just a night or two is here at steelhead falls. Its BLM land and there arent many campsites, but its off the beaten path and you can hike just a half mile down past the falls and jump onto the river. Theres not much around here so come with your sense of adventure and ready to just chill. Note: it says no RVs but we had no trouble parking our 30 foot class C here and it is a dirt road in.

Ll Stub Stewart Memorial State Park*
Outside of Portland in the rolling hills is an outdoor recreational playground for those needing to escape the city. There are over 25-miles of equestrian, mountain biking and hiking paths including a portion of the Banks-Vernonia State Trail. Enjoy a game of disc golf, bring your furry friends to enjoy the fenced leash area, or visit the Interpretive center. Make plans to stay overnight at one of four campgrounds or at the cabin village to make sure you have time see and do everything.

Deer Park Olympic National Park
Get a true backcountry feeling without ditching your car. At the meadowed 14 sites of the highest campground in Olympic , youll likely be outnumbered by ungulates. The short jaunt up nearby Blue Mountain nets 360° views of jawbone peaks and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. And summer stargazing doesnt get much better. Sunny Valley RV Park and Campground is conveniently located in the south-west of the state at Exit 71 on the I-5 corridor, making it handily close to some of the best RV dealerships in Oregon if youre a local camper! Its also based right near the Applegate Trail Interpretive Center and is surrounded by the stunning greenery of Wolf Creek Park.
Bullards Beach State Park
Our number one favorite spot to camp in Southern Oregon. Mostly because its vicinity to Old Town Bandon and to some of the most beautiful beaches on the Pacific Coast. The campground has shade in the A and B loops and if you don’t want to tent camp they do have yurts which are great for middle of winter camping. If you haven’t tried out a yurt before we highly recommend it because it’s great for those days you don’t want to quite rough it. It’s great for the kids too, you feel like you are away at summer camp. They do have theJunior Ranger program, which the kids always love to participate in. They don’t have a playground but we have never really needed it because we are always taking the kids to the various beaches around and when you camp at any state park you get in free to any other state park with your campground pass, for the duration. Lost Lake Campground is a popular place for good reason. It is in Mt. Hood National Forest, situated between Lost Lake and the glacial Mount Hood. Here youll find breathtaking views, along with activities for everyone.
Attractions include the hiking and biking trails, old growth boardwalk near the campground, and lake access with canoe and kayak rentals. Go fishing, birdwatching, or visit one of the nearby waterfalls. Prineville Reservoir State Park*
Stop midway along the Crooked River Canyon scenic drive to enjoy the 15-mile long Prineville Reservoir. This park offers two campgrounds and primitive hike-in or boat-in campsites along its 43-mile shoreline. There is plenty to see by walking the beach, exploring by boat, hiking the trails or fishing along the shores. The main campground offers full-service and day use areas. Jasper Point Campground offers first-come, first-serve sites for those last-minute adventures.

Devils Lake Nation Recreation Area

Devils Lake is located minutes away from downtown Lincoln City and offers a wonderful camping experience.
54 tent sites with a nearby water source and a whiff of the great outdoors is sure to start any adventure off on the right foot.
As one could expect, this campsite is located right next to Devils Lake!
However, there are no campsites with a lakeside view, but there is a trail that is easily accessible to make way to the lake.
Before everyone goes for a great day on the water, I should make clear what this campground offers.
Devils Lake has flushable toilets, hot showers, 28 full-hookup sites with cable TV, 10 yurts, on site firewood for sale, and 12 reservable boat moorage slips.
There is no boat launch ramp on the campground.
The lake is great for floating around in a kayak, paddle boarding, tube floating, swimming, and an excellent place to observe nature.
Visitors will commonly see various species of aquatic birds, elk, deer, raccoons, and although its rare, the beaver!
Overall, the lake is a hotspot for summertime activity and is a great escape from day-to-day life.
It is located minutes away from a shopping center too, so if you forget to bring a pillow or two like I did the last time I went camping, have no fear!

Ray Atkeson Memorial Trail: 23 Miles
This 2.3-mile loop trail has unique and beautiful scenery half the loop winds through lava fields, and the other half affords sweeping views of Sparks Lake and the snowcapped Three Sisters behind it. The hike is relatively flat, making it a great option for those with kids. In the summer you can hop in the lake to cool off!
Silver Falls State Park Campground
Silver Falls is the largest state park in Oregon, encompassing over 9,000 acres of land blessed with old-growth forests, a wealth of stunning waterfalls, and 24 miles of walking trails, 14 miles of horse trails, and a 4-mile bike path.
The park is situated in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains and can be reached in under an hour from the state capital of Salem. The highlight for most visitors to the park is the 7.8-mile loop hike on the Trail of Ten Falls, which, as the name suggests, meanders throughout the 9,200-acre state park, passing by and behind and very nearly under multiple towering waterfalls.
The parks campground is a well-appointed and very convenient affair, with 45 sites for tent camping, another 52 with hookups for RVs, hot showers, flushing toilets, potable water, a playground, and an off-leash area for dogs near the visitor center.

Watson Falls Umpqua National Forest
Watson Falls
In the Umpqua National Forest, less than thirty miles north of Crater Lake National Park, Watson Falls is one of southwest Oregon’s largest waterfalls. The falls plunge for nearly 300 feet and the surrounding waterscapes are filled with movement and many tributaries, making it a popular place for long-exposure photography.
The falls are accessed with less than a half-mile hike from the parking area. The parking area and trailhead come equipped with shaded picnic tables and restrooms, providing a great place for a packed lunch. For an easy add-on adventure to the day, the nearby Toketee Falls is an equally awe-inspiring sight to see.

Hiking permits are required at certain trails
- The natural areas near Bend have seen a 300% increase in recreational use in the past five years. In an effort to mitigate the damaging impacts of overuse, permits are required at certain trailheads starting May 28, 2021. Read more here.
Check to see if a trail is open before heading out
- If you plan to camp near Bend with the hopes of hiking a trail make sure to call the Forest Service for real-time updates before heading out. Trust me, I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but Ill be the first to admit Ive made this mistake. Nature is wild, things happen.
