Red Rock Canyon Nevada Camping

The road in is Dirt. There are 1-5 campsites at this location. There are 3 campsites in this area, 2 on Alamo Rd and one on Mormon Well Rd. All three are large and spacious for any rig. I think any rig can fit in all 3 sites, but the road has large gravel rocks on it making it really rough, dont go down with low clearance. I wouldnt say you need high clearance, but if you turn left from Corn Creek Rd to the closer sites and they are both full youll have to drive down 2 miles before you can turn around if youre pulling any kind of rig behind you. If you turn right first and go down and turn left -onto Mormon Well Rd- the first left down the road is a turn around with the campsite halfway down the road. We loved staying here, it was spacious, quiet, and we had excellent 4G signal.

Calico Hills Uno De Los Lugares Ms Populares De Red Rock Canyon Nevada

Outside Red Rock Canyon State Park

If you thought there was plenty to do inside of the park, then youll be surprised by just how many experiences are on offer outside of the park too. Red Rock Canyon State Park is less than a two-hour drive from Los Angeles, the states most populous city. Smaller cities such as Bakersfield and Lancaster are also a short trip away, meaning that youre never too far from the action.

Red Rock Canyon Campground

A few miles from the visitor center is Red Rock Canyon Campground. Campsites are first-come, first-served with limited amenities and cell phone service. If youre looking to unplug from city life, this is a good public land campground near Las Vegas.

Sites are $20/night for dry camping. Pit toilets and drinking water are the only amenities available. To remove any harmful chemicals or bacteria, we purify the water through our Travel Berkey. Read the full review here.

The campground was half full on a busy Saturday afternoon. With many sites to choose from, we camped in site 3. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, grill, gravel spot for vehicles, and flat gravel spot for tents. Some sites offer a large gazebo over the picnic area.

To get level, we used one rubber leveling pad and one plastic level block under each front tire.

The campground filled up by early evening. Vehicles drove through the campground into the night in search of an open site. As the temperature dropped from the 90s during the day to the low 50s at night, we were glad to spend the night in our camper van.

For anyone planning a visit, I highly recommend checking Red Rock Canyon website or BLM National Conservation website for the latest information on hours, closures, events and other news.

If you do run low on supplies at this campground, civilization is a short five miles away where youll find a large shopping center with many shops including a Costco.

Calico Hills In Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon Campground, NV

The Calico Hills may the most singularly spectacular places in all of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

They are a series of rolling sandstone hills, splashed with all sorts of colors. They were once ancient dunes that were compressed and turned into solid stone.

Geology rocks, doesnt it?

There are two Calico Hills parking lots soon after entering the Scenic Loop Drive and you can park at either one and make some short hikes of different lengths, ranging from 2-6 miles. Its a beautiful place to explore and one you shouldnt miss when visiting Red Rock Canyon, especially for the first time.

Keystone Thrust Trail A Scenic Red Rock Las Vegas Hiking Route

The Keystone Thrust hike is a great Red Rock state park trail, thanks to its geological significance.

The Keystone Thrust was the meeting point for the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. As the two continental plates pushed against each other, they created the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This continental force also formed Red Rock Canyon and created one of the top Red Rock Canyon day hikes.

7. Keystone Thrust Trail, a scenic Red Rock, Las Vegas hiking route

The first portion of the trail is an ascent, so youll want to be in decent shape. Also, the last few cliffs can be challenging, but the views at the end are very nice. Clark County Bans Shooting In Forested Camping Area Near Red Rock Canyon

Originally published in KSNV News 3 on November 19, 2019

Read here:

LAS VEGAS Nonprofit organization Save Red Rock announced Tuesday the Clark County Commissioners unanimous decision to pass an ordinance permanently banning shooting in Lovell Canyon.

Lovell Canyon is described as a rare forested area with dispersed camping and is located behind Red Rock Canyon.

The ordinance was introduced by Commissioner Justin Jones.

RELATED| Clark County Commission votes unanimously to increase parking rates at McCarran Airport

The ban comes in response to results of lead testing that SRR and the Brett Torino Foundation sponsored in May.

Heather Fisher, president of Save Red Rock, said, We are grateful to our Clark County Commissioners for taking action to protect our public lands and recreation areas.

Soil tests conducted in Lovell Canyon by Dr. John Hiatt found concentrations of lead more than 30 times the Environmental Protection Agencys threshold for safety, according to SRR, which says that experts believe the levels are due to unusually high deposits of lead ammunition.

SSR says that Lovell Canyons forest has for years been subject to gunfire and dumped trash targets, and more than 455 acres were burnt from exploding targets.

The campground offers spacious, well-maintained, dirt, and gravel campsites. Its not a large campground so youll want to plan accordingly, as the campsites tend to fill up quickly when the weather is nice. Its a good idea to either make a reservation or show up late morning to grab a walk-in tent spot when someones leaving.

There are three options for campsites:

Weve seen everything from truck campers to trailers to full-size class As in some of these camp spots.

Check Out Mount Wilson

Mount Wilson is the highest sandstone peak in the Spring Mountains, and it is a striking peak that you can enjoy from afar while visiting Red Rock Canyon.

This peak towers to an altitude of 7,071 feet, approximately 5,000 feet above the city of Las Vegas, where you can enjoy more moderate temperatures compared to the valley floor.

But if you want to get a whole other perspective on Vegas and the surrounding area, you can scramble up to the top of Mount Wilson on a number of less technical routes that range from Class 3 to Class 4, or a few technically challenging rock climbing routes.

You can access the most common routes from First Creek Trailhead, which is along Blue Diamond Road, just beyond the Scenic Loop Drive.
