    • Enjoying strolling along glistening sand and watching the sunset at beaches like Coronado, Del Mar, Laguna Beach, and Zuma

It Was A Beautiful Plan To Tunnel Out

Using our local street-cred we intended to unhitch, then drive The Beast across the highway and park it in The Coronado Cays about a ten minute walk or a three-minute bike ride from our trailer.

Yes! On bikes, wed pass through the first pedestrian tunnel under the 75, follow the lighted path to Coronado Bay Road and cross about 50 yards from the Lowes Resort guard station on the pedestrian crosswalk to the place where The Beast would be waiting for us right across the street from Montego Bay Condominiums.

Its the usual way we avoid paying the $8 day-use fee for the State Beach.

Now, theres absolutely no reason for this regulation other than to keep overnight guests at Lowes Resort, Silver Strand campers and low-profile van campers from parking there overnight.

We Knew Right Away Wed All Be Close Friends

    Silverstrand State Beach Camping

The regulars had already formed a community bond and had devised a system where orders are placed and the designated inmate would conduct a food and drink run.

There were no inhibitions about lending and borrowing Got an extra beer? I need to marinate my pork and plenty of invitations to happy hour.

We made friends we will probably have for life.

Without the lock-in rules this would almost be urban camping where business and RVers would benefit from each other.

One exception to being closed off from the business community is the exquisite Lowes Coronado Bay Resort shuttling their guests back and forth from the beach. But, unless youre honeymooning or in a celebratory mood, Loews spa, restaurants and superb menus are over-kill for most campers.

With sites costing between $50.00 and $65.00 per day for partial hook-ups, this campground is on the pricy side.

For just a few dollars more there are better places to stay on the bay like the Chula Vista Marina, with full hook-ups and resort style facilities.

But, if its the sound of the crashing Pacific youre after the salt air, expansive sands and inspirational sunsets then, Silver Strand is the best southernmost beach camping in SoCal.

    Directions:

Located on Highway 75 three miles north of Imperial Beach. Exit at the Silver Strand State Beach exit.

The campground is on the strand approximately six miles south of Coronado Island and approximately three miles north of Imperial Beach. It’s in San Diego yet, it’s a semi remote camping location with water on two sides. The beaches, waves, water, and sky are beautiful at this location. It’s more remote than most campgrounds in San Diego but, that is a good thing in most cases. The campground has ocean fishing, surfing, swimming, kiteboarding, picnicking, and an Aquatic Center. There are nature tours, campfire programs, and Kayak tours that are arranged by the state park. A pedestrian tunnel takes you to the bike trail and the Aquatic Center.

Gas stations and restaurants are not available in the immediate area. Imperial Beach is the closest location for gas and great restaurants. There is also a pier and beach. To the north of the campground is Coronado Island where the restaurants are a bit more expensive but well worth the prices. See the PHOTO tab for pictures of the Coronado Hotel and other sights.

Passing the campground and running through the San Diego Bay is a 24-mile bicycle route called the Bayshore Bikeway. It’s a paved, bike trail on the east side of highway 75. The trail goes up the strand between Imperial Beach and Coronado Island. The other end of the trail goes to downtown San Diego. It doesn’t completely circle the bay, it’s more U shaped.

Welcome to Silver Strand State Beach a Trailer and RV Only campground with 120 asphalt spaces, a mere five miles from our house.

Our proximity to the well-known and highly visible park on Highway 75 made it the ideal location for me and Jim to accomplish some serious trailer n truck lovin over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Sure, we noted the weird closure rules when we made reservations but how could we comprehend it?

I figured the peculiar regulations were just the usual soft, layback, no-worries, rules-shmules sort of thing and, once there, wed be let in on how to slide past those silly so-called gate closures at the Entrance Station after all, we did have a wedding to attend on Saturday night

Now, months later, I can still feel the rough spots where my dress pumps bore into my ankles on the 20-minute walk from the Uber drop off outside the locked No Entrance Station all the way back to our trailer, arms loaded with things we needed from home.

Yes, its a lovely place, but have good walking shoes with you at all times just in case youre delayed on the Coronado Bridge a common occurrence these days or, like us, dare to test the system unsuccessfully.

Rv Camping Right On The Beach

We just got back from a wonderful SoCal vacation in our motorhome. We have a family of 5, including our 3 kids, aged 10, 6, and 2. Over the course of our trip we stayed at a number of RV Parks and Campgrounds. Silver Strand was a highlight for sure! What a great place to stay with your RV. We had a great beachside site, so we literally walked out of our motorhome and onto the sand.It is not a full hook-up site, it is only power and water, but they do have a sani-dump and also provide a fee-for-service pumping truck if you plan on staying for more than a few days.It is not perfect… honestly, the sites are not very spacious or private… it is basically just a large parking lot… and the gates are closed at 7:00 for some reason. That is WAY too early if you plan on going out and exploring San Diego. For us, that wasn’t an issue, as the beach was why we were there, but I can see it being a big problem for some people. That said, this place has one huge thing going for it… LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! The Sunsets alone are worth a 5 out of 5. We will be back in the future and in fact, Silver Strand may be the focal point of the whole trip… It was that amazing.

But, theyre living it up at the Silver Strand State Beach.

Everyone appeared so happy to be there not a single disparaging comment about the draconian rules. It certainly is a popular park and very difficult to secure reservations.

Even by asking for any available it took us months to get in moving three times throughout the week. And once we were with the help of neighbors able to squeeze into our first space after signing a legally binding contract to NOT hit their service tower
