Best Camping Spots In Pa

Gettysburg National Military Park

Best camp spot in Pennsylvania… #74 at Dewdrop Campgrounds

The historic Gettysburg National Military Park, where Lincoln made his famous address over 150 years ago, is an excellent destination for the whole family. It easy to spend multiple days taking in the local sites and activities, not only on the famous battlefield, but also right at each individual resort, states Allison Hagerman, the Communications Coordinator for Destination Gettysburg. The campgrounds in Gettysburg are very family-friendly, and offer numerous programs on the weekends throughout the camping seasonThese programs range from Halloween celebrations to chili cook-offs and offer campers a chance to interact with one another.

For history aficionados, the campgrounds found here have a lot to offer. Different types of historical tours are available at the Artillery Ridge Campground and the Gettysburg KOA Campground, which often host living history encampments and nightly movies on the battlefields history. But dont be fooled by Gettysburgs historic façade. There is plenty to do beyond the battlefield, Allison reports.

Other activities include fishing on Marsh Creek, playing Frisbee golf, watching live performances, and attending local festivals. The bi-annual Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival is held at the Granite Hill Camping Resort and the famous National Apple Harvest Festival is another local treat for visitors to the area.

Find Adventure On The Appalachian Trail

Lakefront Camping In Pennsylvania | Seven Points Campground PA

The Appalachian trail swings through about 230 miles of the Keystone State and intrepid hikers could conceivably hike all the way to Georgia or Maine from any point along the Pennsylvania section of the trail. Even if your plans aren’t quite that ambitious, you could easily spend a week or two following the path through the ridges and valleys of eastern Pennsylvania’s Appalachian Mountains. Backcountry campsites are available along the way in many areas with lean-to trail shelters spaced about every 10 miles. Most shelters have a nearby water source, along with vault toilets and ample room to pitch a tent. Secluded forests and panoramic mountaintop vistas are the norm on the Appalachian Trail, but there are dozens of towns within a mile of the trail where you can stop to gather supplies. Detailed trail maps and guides are available through the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

Best Backpacking Trails In Pennsylvania

Approximate Time Frame: Four to six days

Loyalsock vista

About the hike: Stretching across beautiful Lycoming and Sullivan counties, the Loyalsock Trail offers grand views and challenging climbs. As one of the more established backpacking trails in PA, the route is well marked and includes an official guidebook, topo maps, and a trail log system developed by the Alpine Club of Williamsport. The trail closely follows Loyalsock Creek as it carves its way through the northern PA mountains, featuring multiple waterfalls and iconic mountain views. There are a few areas of the trail that are popular among day hikers, but for the most part youll have this trail to yourself, making this a great backcountry getaway.

The Midstate Trail. Image by Dylan Pickle Tonkin

About the hike: Traversing the height of the state from the Mason Dixon Line to the New York border, the Mid State Trail is a Pennsylvania classic. The trail sits almost entirely on a mixture of state forests, state game lands, and state parks, dubbing this the wildest trail in Pennsylvania. Although the MST may appear wild and remote, this is often an illusion as the trail is rarely over a mile from the nearest road, which makes resupplies easy on this three- to four-week trek. The trail is incredibly scenic and has been carefully constructed on ridgelines, offering as many views possible along the route. The MST is also the first US trails to use the metric system on both trail signage and in the guidebook.
