About Bradbury Mountain State Park
Bradbury Mountain State Park is a great place to spend a day or afternoon enjoying the magnificent views from the top or picnicking in the treetops. In 1939, the federal government bought the land on the west side of the mountain, north of Bradbury Lake, to use it as a state park. Bradbury Mountain is the only national park in southern Maine that offers two shared trails, the Bradbury Trail and the North Fork Trail. The park attracts visitors who enjoy the picturesque view from the top of the mountain, as well as a variety of hiking, cycling and camping opportunities. This park is located on the west side of Bradburys Lake, north of downtown Portland, in the heart of the southernmost county of Maine, with a population of about 2,000. Today, the forests of the park are home to a variety of plants and animals, and snowshoe rental is possible. Autumn is a busy time when visitors can watch peregrine falcons and eagles from the thermal spring and enjoy the view of autumn leaves from above. Bradbury Mountain, formed by glaciers, is the most outstanding natural feature of this park.
Bradbury Mountain State Park Overview
Bradbury Mountain State Park campground is open year round, has 35 campsites and is located in a beautiful forest between Portland and Lewiston-Auburn. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grate.
Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers , and a dishwashing station. There is also a day use / picnic area, playground, and camp host that will sell you firewood. Hike The Trails At Bradbury Mountain State Park
This is the most popular thing to do a Bradbury Mountain State Park. They are known for their summit view and the bird watching from the summit.
There is a direct trail to the top that is about .2 miles but it is quite steep. Certainly doable by any family but if you are looking for something less strenuous consider one of the other trails. The boundary trail is more meandering but is 2 miles long. We did see many bikes entering the trails as well.
We chose the steep path but the shortest distance to the top thus following the white trail. You can find the trail markings on trees to be sure you are still on the correct one.
the trail is safe enough to let kids wander and explore the woods a little.

What To Do At Bradbury Mountain State Park
If youâre more interested in having an adventure on the rocks than admiring them scientifically, Bradbury Mountain State Park was rated the #1 best mountain biking spot in all of Maine. The two favorite trails are the single track on the campground side of the park, and the Knights Wood trail.
Camping in Bradbury State Park is a great chance to go birdwatching, and from mid-March to mid-May the annual Hawk Watch is held. Started in 2007, this event tracks and counts the hawks as they fly north over the park.
Camping during the winter is available, and 80 years ago the mountain actually had a downhill skiing slope with a rope tow. These days, the winter activities are restricted to cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
Wildlife in Bradbury Mountain State Park includes deer, porcupines, gray foxes, and plenty of squirrels. And when it comes to domesticated animals, exploring campers may find the old stone walls that farmers built 200 years ago to stop cattle. (In fact, there are a few cases of âcattle pensâ, which were temporary stone enclosures where aggravated landowners would pen in a wandering cow and not let it leave until the farmer paid a fine.

Hiking At Bradbury Mountain State Park
There are a bunch of different hiking trails at the park to enjoy but theyre all pretty short. The longest trail is only 2.6 miles long and some are as short as .2 miles.
One of the nice things about the trail though is that many of them lead to the same overlook. This overlook is really pretty and offers a great view of the surrounding area but it was pretty crowded when I was there.
I think I would have enjoyed it better if I had gone at a time when Id likely have it all to myself. Id have also taken more pictures as well.

Bradbury Mountain State Park
Ill start off with this: I really, really, really wanted to fall in love with Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal, Maine, just minutes outside of Freeport. Its close to home , and my hopes were that wed love it so much that it would become one of our go-to close-to-home parks. Unfortunately, such was not the case. And while Ive had a few days to think about our one-night stay here at Bradbury, I still cant quite put a finger on what I didnt love about the park.
The park has two separate areason one side of the road is the day use area with access to picnic tables and trails . park headquarters is also on this side, and thats where we checked in. The campground is just across the street. We helped ourselves to the wood bundles . One definite positive: the wood cost $5 for a generous bundle , though the wood is loose. Luckily, we had put a tarp down in the van and set the wood on that so we didnt have a mess to clean up. But $5 was a bargainthe parks in New Hampshire are $6/bundle, and wood at Camden Hills State Park in Maine was $7/bundle.
The park is smalljust 35 sitesbut it didnt feel warm and cozy. And unlike so many of the other state parks in Maine, Bradbury Mountain SP always seems to have a ton of availability, even with so few sites and even on short notice. We had site #4, which was rated L for a large site that could accommodate a camper up to 30 feet in length.

Camping At Bradbury Mountain State Park
Our family stayed in a tent in a campsite here for 4 nights. The campground was very quiet. The grounds were well-kept and the park hosts were around frequently to check on things or for questions. We stayed in campsite #4, which is a large corner site that is quiet. The best site looked like #19, which is large and set back from the road a bit. I would try to stay in a site that is not right next to the pit toilets. The showers were individual shower rooms and very clean – the best we have seen at a campground. The trails were fun to explore and I would recommend the 0.2 mile hike to the peak if you don’t have much time. After our stay here we went to Recompense Shore campground, also in Freeport, which was not as nice.

We stayed at an amazing local Bed and Breakfast – James Place Inn, Freeport, Maine – and the owners recommended a trip to Bradbury Mountain. We were so happy we took them up on the suggestion! We hiked up the mountain and we rewarded with an amazing view from the top. Being there in October, we had the gorgeous fall colors and were able to see all the way to the ocean. It was a beautiful Fall day and we rested for awhile at the top before choosing a path back down. We took a winding path, which took us quite awhile to hike back down. Check the trail maps before you head up if you are on a time schedule. If not, take your time and enjoy the scenery!
