The route to Cannon Beach is easy from Portland, head west on Highway 26 until you reach the coast, where youll turn onto Route 101. Shortly after, theres Cannon Beach! From the town, all of these hikes are within 10 miles of driving.
If youre not taking your own vehicle, you will need to rent a car in Cannon Beach to get to the hiking trails. The easiest place to get your rental is Portland, either from the airport or a nearby office. Booking ahead of time ensures youll get a rental, and I recommend using Discover Cars or Rental Cars.
You can also turn this into a fun, unique camping trip and rent a tiny home on wheels! With a camper van, you get a vehicle and a place to sleep, all in one! This is my favorite way to travel, and you can rent a fully decked out van with Escape Campervans.
Rogue River Dispersed Campsites
Located within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest are several dispersed campsites that are off the beaten path. This quiet park system is nestled within the woods many miles away from highways and arterial roads. While not accessible to RV campers, Rogue River has many picnic areas and cascade mountain views for tent campers.
There are dozens of private camping areas in Rogue River. Each independent campsite is ideal for wildlife viewing and pets can be brought along. Scenic forest views abound in Rogue River, where you can go for a hike, rent a raft at the boat ramp, or embark on a mountain bike ride through some of the best wooded trails in America.

Fort Stevens State Park

On the far northwest tip of Oregon, and one of the top attractions in Astoria, Fort Stevens State Park is a retired military space now converted into one of the largest campgrounds on the coast. This unique history, alongside an expansive sandy beach, makes Fort Stevens one of the most popular places to go camping in Oregon.
Even with more than 300 tent and 150 RV spaces available, advanced camping reservations are still recommended . Shower houses, flushing toilets, and running water can be found within the two massive campground loops at Fort Stevens. The campground also features one of the most impressive amphitheaters in the country, which showcases educational movies throughout the week.
It’s highly recommended to explore the site’s military history spread throughout the park during any stay. Facilities include barracks, batteries, and bunkers. The visitor center is a great place to start a self-guided history tour, where archival photographs and displays paint a picture of the fort’s military past.
The ocean access at Fort Stevens is also a main draw. The ancient remains of the Peter Iredale shipwreck on the beach is a must-see sight. And unique to the rest of the coast, vehicles are allowed on parts of the beach at Fort Stevens. Despite this vehicle traffic and its popularity for clamming, it’s easy to find your own space on the wide beach, which stretches for nearly 20 miles to the south.

Sunny McKay Crossing is part of the Deschutes National Forest system and is overseen by the US Department of Agriculture. At this campground, there are vault toilets and very few amenities and luxuries. However, this free campsite offers some of the best hiking loops anywhere in the state of Oregon.
A combination of creeks, trails, and high elevation make McKay Crossing stand out among the rest of the campgrounds in the area. Only a short drive from Newberry Volcanic Monument, McKay Crossing is home to many rare wildlife species and features tranquil seclusion in the deep woods.

Barview Jetty County Park
Just north of Tillamook, nestled between the bay and the Pacific, Barview Jetty County Park sports a whopping 293 campsites! The park has hot showers, beach access, places to fish and hike and even wifi for those still hoping to be connected. This campground isnât as rustic or wild as others listed, but does have plenty of amenities to make the newest of campers feel safe, comfortable and part of society while sleeping under the stars. Open all year long, camping at Barview is the perfect basecamp for all your Oregon coast adventures. For an added treat, drive south, around the bay and explore the scenes and the lighthouse at Cape Mears.

How Do I Know Whats Legal
Look at a map and youll see light green shaded areas within each state designating National Forests. Within these areas, its legal to car-camp for FREE! Remember this as itll save you fistfuls of cash during your road trip. The United States is peppered with federally-owned land, comprising roughly 28 percent of the entire country . Just look out for posted signage, such as no overnight parking and day use only. If you see one of those, we recommend you find another place to camp. Always check with a ranger to confirm which areas are and are not legal.
Free Camping In Oregon In Public Lands
The Bureau of Land Management manages over 16 million acres of public land throughout Oregon and Washington. While some of these areas offer paid developed camping, dispersed camping on public lands is also an option.
Campers may not stay for longer than 14 days within a consecutive 28 day period. After the 14 days are exceeded, campers must move a minimum of 25 miles away to locate a new campsite.

Nehalem Bay State Park

Less than a two-hour drive from all the big-city attractions in Portland, this state park is set upon a four-mile sand spit separating Nehalem Bay from the ocean. More than 260 electrical sites cater to RVs and tent campers at Nehalem Bay. The state park also has the largest selection of yurts on the coast, with 18 available to rent.
Via a short, sandy trail, campers cross a dune to access the beach and ocean from the campground. Restrooms, running water, and showers are all included on-site. Camping reservations are recommended if not required in the summer season.
Just a couple of miles north of the campground, the small town of Manzanita is a great place to buy camping supplies, eat out for a meal, or catch some live music on the weekends.

Sunset Bay State Park

South of Coos Bay and the fishing village of Charleston, Sunset Bay State Park is tucked neatly in a bay created by sandstone sea cliffs. The sheltered surroundings of Sunset Bay keep the waters nice and calm for water play and provide refuge from the sometimes-breezy conditions on the coast.
The tucked-away campground at Sunset Bay features spaces for RVs, tent campers, hikers, and cyclists. Every site includes access to running water, showers, and flushing toilets. Every site also features easy access to the ocean, only a short walk away.
For neighboring adventures connected by hiking trails, both Shore Acres State Park and Cape Arago State Park are just a little farther south. Both these state parks offer other camping options and coast to explore.

Carl G Washburne Memorial State Park

On the east side of the 101, between Yachats and Florence, this 1,000-acre state park has approximately 60 campsites available. Campsites at Washburne, unlike most state park campgrounds, are exclusively available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Many sites cater to RVs, with full hookups available. Two reservable yurts are also available, as are hiker/biker sites. All overnight guests have access to flushing toilets, running water, and free hot showers.
The beach adjacent to Carl G. Washburne is a great place to explore or relax. Paved and unpaved hiking trails lead from the campground to the beach and various other wildlife-viewing areas. For those who want to make a great day trip from the campground, the Heceta Head Lighthouse is a short drive to the south.

Unless stated otherwise , its legal to sleep in your vehicle within ANY federally designated lands. These include:

Look for the brown and yellow signs announcing your entrance to public land and youll know youre in the right place. Be aware of wildfires during the heat months in the California and surrounding areas when planning your trip since camping would then be off limits.

Circle Creek Rv Park & Campground
Six miles north of Cannon Beach near the neighboring town of Seaside, Circle Creek RV Park & Campground opens in early April and closes in late October. More than 40 sites with full hookups, including cable TV, are reserved for RVs, and the campground maintains two large grassy areas for tent camping. Other campground features include a camp store, coin-operated laundry facilities, showers, restrooms, picnic tables and fire rings. A popular pastime among Oregon beachgoers is clam digging, which can be done almost anywhere along the coast, preferably during the cooler spring months.

How To Get To Ecola State Park
Ecola State Park is an hour and a half drive from Portland, Oregon. Getting to the park is easy with ample signage showing the way to the entrance at the south end of the park.
If you are coming from Bend, OR, Ecola State Park is about four hours away. However, there is a ton to see in between Bend and Cannon Beach and you will enjoy every minute!
From 5th Street , head north on Ecola Park Road for 1½ miles to the fee station.
Ecola State Park Camping
Theres no campground at Ecola State Park, but Hikers Camp is a great place to stay if you happen to be hiking the Oregon Coast Trail or are just looking to hike in and camp overnight. The small hikers camp consists of three rustic wooden shelters, each with four wooden bunks. Theres a vault toilet but no running water. Camping here is free, but overnight parking is not allowed inside the park. So, youll have to hike in from either Seaside or Cannon Beach. The shelters fill quickly in the summertime.

Umpqua Lighthouse State Park

One of the smaller state park campgrounds on the coast, Umpqua Lighthouse State Park is a mile south of Winchester Bay and near the center of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.
The 12 full-hookup RV sites and 23 tent sites at Umpqua are centered around the freshwater Lake Marie. A scenic paved path circles the water and lends access to non-motorized boating, fishing, and swimming. Adjacent to the campground, the Umpqua River Lighthouse provides aesthetic appeal and elevated views of the distant ocean shore.
Yurts, rustic log cabins, and a cozy hiker/biker camp are also available at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, and all registered campers have access to hot showers and flushing toilets.

Cole Mountain Ridge Road
An easily accessible and convenient camping area for those visiting Cannon Beach and the surrounding area is Cole Mountain Ridge Road. Tucked just inside Tillamook State Forest, this dispersed camping area is located east of Highway 53.
The location included in the map linked above is the first of many small clearing in the trees off of Cole Mountain Road that make excellent campsites. Each is relatively small, so dont plan on bringing your RV or large trailer up here. However, you can expect relatively secluded sites that give easy access to the coast.
Be aware that there are typically active logging activities in the area. There is no water source here either, so youll need to come prepared with all the water youll need for your stay.

National Forests And Blm Land
The best option for free camping near the beach is in the manynational forests along the shore. The Siuslaw, Rogue-River Siskiyou, andTillamook State Forests are all located along the coast. There are a fewdispersed camping sites within these areas. Camping is also allowed along theforest roads if you can find a pullout suitable for your rig.
Another option is the Bureau of Land Management land in the area. Bastendorff Beach on the southern coast is a popular overnight spot with RVers. Camping is free and you need to limit your stay to 14 days or less.
