If ready beach access is important than opt for the Beach Campground. The gentle sound of the breakers permeates this location as does the salt air and near constant breeze. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Scott Creek, the Beach Campground surrounds you with a delightful slice of coastal South Carolina pie.

All the sites that run along the southeast edge back up to the Atlantic Ocean, separated only by a large dune . Sites 1-13 have the most natural shade and easy beach access. Our site was #3 -full shade and private – sat up on a narrow rise therefore only suitable for a tent.

The sites that run along the Scott Creek side and the far end loop may present a challenge in the mid-summer heat. If your rig has AC then you’ll be fine till quiet hours, but if you are tent camping choose your site wisely or you might find yourself sweltering. The Scott Creek salt marsh may also supply swarms of mosquitoes in the warmer months to the entire site but that might be true of most any South Carolina coastal camp.

South Carolina is packed with things to see and do. The coastal city of Charleston exudes Southern charm with elegant buildings and churches, military forts, and interesting museums, while Myrtle Beach is a playground of golf courses, water parks, and 60 miles of pristine beaches.

A Great Charleston Rv Park

Charleston is the meeting point for the heartbeat of history in one incredible area. Step into the charm of yesteryear and explore the past or enjoy the quiet serene nature of the park for a time of relaxation.

Lake Aire offers 35 acres of Charleston charm and is located just 20 minutes from historic downtown Charleston. The Park is an excellent base camp for one-day trips to local plantations, Ft. Sumpter, historic Charleston or Folly Beach. There are many points of interest and incredibly interesting attractions in the lovely Charleston area. You could spend several weeks exploring all the flavor and history that is Charleston.

Trails: Biking & Hiking

The parks trails are all in the western portion of the park, away from the beach. In total, its about 4 miles of trails. If youre planning to hike: bring bug spray! Not a bad idea for the bikers, either.

All trails are bike accessible and fairly level, but some are bumpier than others.

The Forest Loop trail is rough on a bike, with all the tree roots. Unlike the other trails in the park, this one is not a cleared, sandy path. Walking this trail is easier on your joints and lets you admire the trees more.

The Spanish Mount Trail and Scott Creek Trail have the best marsh views. Big Bay Trail is really just a connector trail between the Education Center and the Spanish Mount.

The Bache Trail is short and includes several informational signs to explain land surveying before you reach the survey monument.

Delve Into The Depths Of The Old Charleston City Jail

Take a tour of Charlestons historic city jail that once held everyone from pirates to Civil War POWs. The old city jails long and haunting history began in 1802 and served as the city jail from 1803 to 1939.

Convicts ranging from murderers to petty criminals were housed in the jail with each floor keeping a different type of inmate with the ground floor accommodating the jailers and the gentleman prisoners. Union POWs were incarcerated inside the jail during the Civil War.

Visitors can explore the jail on guided tours that provide interesting historical information about the jail and its use, while at the same chatting about the rumors of haunting and ghost stories that are associated with the prison.

Edisto Island State Park

If you are in search of a great oceanfront campground, lookno further than Edisto Beach State Park. The park is rich in Native American history,wildlife, hiking and biking opportunities, as well as two campgrounds, cabinsand 1.5 miles of pristine shell-covered beachfront.

The park is made up of 1,255 acres of maritime forest alongthe beautiful SC coastline. There you will find the environmental learning center,ranger station, and welcome station.

Edisto Beach, along with its neighboring Botany Bay, is famous for its seashells. While Botany Bay does not allow the collection of shells, Edisto Beach State Park does.

The Edisto Beach State Park also has 4 miles of ADA accessible trails for hiking and biking. These trails take you through maritime forest, historic monuments, and a Native American shell mound. These trails are also great for bird watching. Many shore and wading birds can be seen here.

The park is a nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles. You can also spot white-tailed deer, raccoons, alligators, bobcats, and opossums.

Furnished cabins sit nestled in the woods, and campsites can be found along the Edisto Island oceanfront or in the shaded maritime forest. There are 120 campsites that accommodate RVs or tents. There are seven cabins located on the salt marsh.

The park also includes picnic shelters and a park store.

Edisto Beach State Park: A Tale Of Two Campgrounds

Split between two campgrounds, Edisto Beach State Park gives you a choice between an ocean-front experience or more of a back-country location. A lot is going to depend on personal preference, availability, and your gear.

Heated, spotless, and modern bathhouses with an ample supply of hot water in their private shower stalls are some of the many details that made our two-night stay at Edisto Beach State Park pleasant. All sites â minus the Live Oak campground walk-in locations â have water , electric hook-ups, WiFi access, and an abundance of raccoons. We saw four or five raccoons peering at us while we were sitting at our campfire. We also saw a couple of particularly bold ones during the daylight so make sure you keep a clean campsite.

Things to Know:

• Check-in for both sites is near the Live Oak Campground on Cabin Road. With the exception of the two particularly gruff state park attendants at the check-in station, we have nothing but great things to say about the rangers, security, and other state park personnel.
• The Edisto Beach State Park daily pass included with your camping fee.
• Both campgrounds fill quickly – especially the Beach Campground – make reservations well in advance
• Expensive – $50-60/night – even for our tent only campsite the walk-in campsites are $22/night.
• All reservations have a two-day minimum.
• No Laundry facilities at campground.
• Leashed pets allowed.

Myrtle Beach State Park Campground has 302 sites for tents and RVs full of individual electricity and water hookups, picnic tables, fire pits, and access to comfort stations with showers, toilets, and drinking water. Explore The Night Sky At The Dupont Planetarium In Aiken

Located in the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center on the campus of USC-Aiken, the DuPont Planetarium presents shows that focus on astronomy and the beauty of the night sky. The planetarium has a 45-seat theater with a 30-foot diameter tilted dome that uses a Digistar II graphics projector system that displays more than 9,000 stars. Hour-long shows are presented on the 1st and 3rd Friday and Saturday of every month.

If your approach to Edisto Beach State Park routes you anywhere near Columbia, South Carolina, then we highly recommend a stop at the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. Proving that small zoos can be excellent, Riverbanks Zoo & Garden makes great use of its 170-acre site which houses more than 2,000 animals of every sort including an excellent reptile exhibit, gorillas, very loud Siamang apes plus lions, tigers, AND bears â cue the obligatory “OH MY!”

Be sure to pick up a park map on your way in and catch one or more of the free animal feedings or demonstrations. If you have extra time, buy an Explore More Card so you can take part in activities ranging from feeding the giraffes and lorikeets to climbing the rock wall and riding the carousel. Zipline tours are also available for the adventurous.

Since we skipped the rides and attractions, it took us about three casual hours to see all the animal exhibits which gave us plenty of time to linger around the family favorites – we easily spent fifteen minutes enjoying the Siamang apes swinging and howling.

The morning started out cold , so we began with the indoor exhibits like the reptile hall and birdhouse, and then did the outdoor exhibits as the day warmed up. We’d advise the reverse in the heat of the summer.

âFamily Favorites: We enjoyed the reptile exhibit hall, the gorilla family , watching the Siamang apes swinging and howling, koala bear, and penguins.

We were actually there in the off-season and they were allowed off leash! Yes. I dont remember if they were required to be on leash or not in that ours always is. Yes they are.

Visit The Fort Moultrie National Monument

Located on Sullivans Island, Fort Moultrie National Monument is a series of fortifications that were built to protect the city of Charleston. The forts protected the city for more than 170 years from the Revolutionary War and through to World War II.

James Island County Park Campground And Cottages

The James Island County Park Campground and Cottages have 124 campsites for RVs with full hookups, water and sewerage, and waste disposal, as well as 10 cottages available for rent. The campground has 24-hour staffing, free Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, a general store, and a round-trip shuttle service to the downtown Charleston visitor center, and Folly Beach County Park.

The 643-acre James Island County Park is home to one of the only water parks in Charleston called Splash Zone, which has one of the tallest outdoor climbing facilities in South Carolina.
