Battle Ground Lake State Park
Staying in state parks is great, as you have a thing to do and see right on your doorstep. Battle Ground is a forested park in the Cascade Mountain foothills, making it a great escape from the city and suburbs, yet should still be considered a Portland campground.
The green lake at the edge of the campground is ideal for swimming and fishing, plus there are 10 miles of hiking trails within the park, as well as a self-guided nature trail. Campsites are pretty primitive, and there is a bit of a hike from the parking lot, but it is great place to spend the night or longer.

Government Island State Recreation Area
For a campground that is only accessible by boat, try the Government Island State Recreation Area, where camping is permitted in a few select areas such as below the vegetation line around the perimeter, and in a few upland areas where there are picnic tables.

Duck Harbor is closed this year, a smart response to COVID-19 on an island with an aging population and no medical facilities. But you werent going to get a 2020 reservation by the time you read this anyway. The five-month season for the five lean-tos on a remote cove on Isle au Haut can book solid within hours of the National Park Service making sites available in April. I got one last year, so now I understand why.
About half of Isle au Haut is an outpost of Acadia National Park, and unless you have a boat, the only way to reach it is via mailboat from Stonington, an hour-long cruise past island after granite-fringed island. At the Isle au Haut town landing, the boat drops off locals, packages, pallets of supplies, and a few day hikers bound for the parks 18 miles of trails. Then, it cruises past Robinson Point Light and tucks into the narrow finger of Duck Harbor. I disembarked last September with a backpack and my 3-year-old, and we watched from the gangway as the mailboat puttered back into the open ocean and out of sight.

We stayed in East bay where there’s a road with a mix of sites and then a field encircled by E/W sites. Those sites have very little privacy. We were at site 131 which was better than I expected it to be. It’s a deep skinny site. The outhouses are a bit farther apart than I’m used to. There’s a working farm on the property.”

Fort Stevens State Park
For 84 years, from the Civil War through World War II, Fort Stevens State Park was an active military base. Today its a 4,300-acre park, situated two hours northwest of Portland at the mouth of the Columbia River. Its diverse natural habitats and spectacles include forests, wetlands, dunes, a military museum and the haunting Peter Iredale shipwreck. In the summer, you can also swim in freshwater Coffenbury Lake and tour the WWII gun battery. Explore these sites by foot or bicycle along the parks 6 miles of hiking trails and 9 winding miles of paved paths. A total of 15 rustic yurts are available .
