Not Knowing My Rvs Distance

I just got back from a camping trip where I learned this lesson the hard way. I was planning to visit the Alvord Desert in southeastern Oregon. Its an incredibly cool but also very remote area. I filled up gas in the last tiny town and started driving to the desert.

My 2011 F-150 gets 8 miles to the gallon when Im towing my 25 travel trailer. Sure enough, the gas gauge hit half a tank before we made it to the camp site. Knowing wed have to make it BACK, we had to stop our trip. We were only 20 miles from the camp site, but we wouldnt have enough gas to get back to the nearest gas station. We had to turn around and find a new camp site. We had an extra 5 gallon gas tank, but wed need some of that for the generator, so we didnt want to risk it.

Lesson learned: Check the range of your rig on a tank of gas before heading into very remote areas. Also, you cant have too many gas cans.

Using Rv Stabilizers As Leveling Jacks

I didnt make this big RV mistake this year, but I learned about it. I asked the repair guy at Camping World:

What is the most common RV repair that could be easily avoided?

His answer: people using the stabilizers to raise up the trailer to change a flat, or just generally cranking them too high.

Lesson Learned: The stabilizers on your RV are not leveling jacks.

RV leveling jacks should lightly touch the ground to keep the RV from bouncing as you walk around, and thats it. If you continue cranking them to raise the RV a little, they are likely to break.

Camping World Seems To Care More About Money And Business Growth

The overall business plan of Camping World appears to be to lure in those that are new to the burgeoning RV industry. They seem to entice customers, through selling the RV lifestyle, to spend as much money as possible on RVs, purchase additional warranties, and use their financing.

Whats worse is that years after this trend has come to light in the RV community, no changes seem to have been made, and more Camping World locations have opened.

Its fair to say the entire RV manufacturing industry is somewhat to blame. Wed like to see Camping World take the initiative to change the stereotype and deliver high quality RVs and service.

Neglecting Rv Roof Seals

Check roof seals twice a year. This is to ensure there are no cracks, tears, or anything else. Even a hairline crack can spell disaster! I havent made this mistake yet in my first year, but as Ive looked at other RVs , its the mistake that others have made that has ruined many RVs.

Lesson learned: Have the people at the dealership do the checking. They are financially incentivized to find something. They will tell you if theres any potential for water intrusion.

    Beware Of Ordering Online

Camping World: 2020 Master Catalog Now Available!

I shopped online, selected a product, then backed out before clicking the submit button. I didn’t receive a confirmation notice to my email, but they sent a notice to my email this morning, telling me that the expensive, heavy product will be delivered tomorrow. I needed the item sooner than they could deliver and bought it elsewhere. They said too bad. They must be desperate, beware. I will have to pay return shipping. A confirmation email would have shocked me, but I could have cancelled at that point.

Buying My Rv From Camping World

I purchased a brand new Rockwood MiniLite 2504s this year. I love my trailer and Id probably choose it again if I could go back in time.

However, I would not have purchased at Camping World. I also would have gone in with a different expectation. First of all, Camping World gave us wonderful treatment until the instant that we gave them our money. The instant the deal was done, the customer service became pathetic.

Our trailer has spent more days at Camping World being fixed than weve actually used it. Our Rockwood has had a few minor issues Small things. Yet, Camping World has had the trailer in for months to fix them.

Lesson learned: I will never, ever buy from Camping World again. Period. Instead, I would know how to get a good RV deal with these tips.

    Camping World Is Overpriced

If you shop around, you will most likely get better deals elsewhere.

Its easy to imagine that the chain has a higher overhead for their fancy high traffic locations and marketing. As a result, higher prices are passed down to customers.

Often, you can find products priced lower at other stores. For example, Amazon or Walmarts camping sections are usually more economical.

Camping World makes money off of financing, too. This can result in a worse deal than using your own bank or shopping for online financing.

RV salesmens pressure tactics are finely honed to get you to hurry and make large financial decisions. Then they often push add-ons like warranties and accessories.

    Taking Curves Too Fast

I didnt necessarily make this mistake this year, but its a mistake that I saw a fellow RVer make. Unfortunately it resulted in their entire rig flipping over into the ditch beside the road. Nobody was hurt but it didnt look like the camper trailer survived.

Lesson Learned: Don take curves too fast. You have a much higher center of gravity in an RV.

This type of accident usually happens for one or all of these reasons:

  • uncontrolled fishtailing
  • driving in strong winds
  • taking curves too fast
  • You know all those road signs about sharp curves that you usually ignore when driving a car? When driving a motorhome or towing a trailer, those signs become extremely important.

    Returning An Item By Mail

    RV Overview: Heartland Pioneer

The following steps are required to return an item by mail:

  • Camping World requires you to use an Exchange/Return form and indicate the reason for returning your item. If you plan on exchanging, you must fill out the information for the item you wish to receive in exchange for the returned item.
  • When boxing the item, include the Exchange/Return form along with the original receipt and the item in its original unused, unopened condition. Items wont be accepted without original packaging.
  • Use the return shipping label included on the Exchange/Return Form. You are required to pay the return shipping costs, except for clothing or footwear, in which case Camping World will refund you for the shipping costs.
  • It takes about 10 15 days to fully process a return. The return will either be refunded fully, including tax, to the debit or credit card used to make the purchase or exchanged if indicated on the form.

Camping Worlds Service Departments Often Get Mediocore Reviews

According to online forums, Camping World is notorious for taking a long time to fix campers. To be fair, this is an issue across the entire RV service industry. But, Camping World isnt doing the stereotype any favors.

There are hundreds if not thousands of more reviews telling stories of campers sitting months waiting for service.

Multiple online reviews report the service quality as hit or miss depending on the location and technician. Some reviews state that they didnt have a way to move 5th wheel trailers. Consequently, people had to stay with their RV all day and potentially wait around for hours after a scheduled appointment.

Sure, these are all anecdotal stories. But, its doesnt help our confidence towards shopping with them.

A common complaint weve seen in online forums is that the level of service completely falls off after you buy a unit, new or used. Others feel the RVs are lemons or built to break.

Ordered Two Chairs A Week And Half Ago

Ordered two chairs a week and half ago no word so I called to check and the people I talked to was the worst I have had the displeasure to talk to. They said it was boxed and ready to ship that was 8 days ago still no word finely got a email saying it was shipped nothing yet and no other word. NEVER ORDER FROM CAMPING WORLD worst service ever.
