Icipate In The Hog Pen Hill Climb

RV Camping in Helen | Hiking Brasstown Bald Georgia

Unfortunately, this event has nothing to do with swine. But, the Hog Pen Hill Climb is notable as one of the toughest races in the Southeast U.S. This punishing uphill race has a reputation for being one of the toughest in the U.S., with its total ascent of 1,939 breathless feet. Participants come from all over to compete in the 18k race that finishes across Hogpen Gap on the Appalachian Trail. Theres also a 5k race loop around Unicoi Lake, referred to as the Piglet Race. Runners take off every year in January and raised proceeds go toward the Northeast Georgia Habitat for Humanity.

Tallulah Gorge State Park

Tallulah Gorge State Park , about 28 miles east of Helen, protects a two-mile-long, 1,000-foot-deep gorge with a river tumbling over rocks at its bottom. Scenic overlooks provide views, and the park issues a limited number of passes each day for hikers who want to climb to the bottom and cross the swinging bridge 80 feet above the river. The park offers primitive backcountry campsites with Adirondack-style shelters reachable by mountain bike or a hike through the forest. The sites have no facilities.

Best Rv Park Near Helen

We intended to stay for 3 nights and wound up staying for a full week. The RV Resort is just so beautiful and the hosts Robert and Melissa are delightful. We even took the time after we checked in, to explore some of the other campgrounds in the area. We couldn’t find ANYTHING that was nearly as beautiful as Creekwood. There is a breakfast/lunch restaurant right across the street that has GREAT food . It is a very short jaunt into town and the views along the way are breathtaking. The Helen, Ga. area is wonderful, but staying at Creekwood Resort made it that much better! We’ll be back soon.More

    Unicoi State Park History

The history of Unicoi State Park dates back to the 1930s, long before the North Georgia mountain town of Helen was developed.

It all started when the Civilian Conservation Corps built a camp along Smith Creek, just north of the site of where the Unicoi Lodge is now.

Around that same time, businessman/politician Charlie Maloof convinced the state government to build a new highway to Hiawassee. Now known as Georgia 75, it replaced the aging Unicoi Turnpike, which was a toll road whose use dated back to the gold rush of the 1830s.

Unicoi comes from the Cherokee word unega, which means white or the New Way. Legend has it that Unicoi was the native name for the road that brought white settlers into Cherokee territory. But it may also refer to the white fog of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

It was Maloof who proposed building a new lodge north of the city, and the 278-acre White County Area State Park was opened in 1954.

At that time it only had 8 campsites and a Visitors Center, but they soon dammed Smith Creek to create Unicoi Lake.

Maloof died before getting a chance to see his dream come to fruition, but the Unicoi State Park Lodge finally broke ground in 1982.

It was the first lodge built in any of the Georgia State Parks, and Unicoi now ranks alongside Helen among the most popular tourist attractions in North Georgia.
