We visited the Grand Teton National Park in our Airstream in September 2018 and wanted to boondock in or near the park.
Wed read about many different options in the area, including the very popular recreational vehicle boondocking spot on Shadow Mountain, but ultimately decided on a camping spot in whats known as the Spread Creek meadow dispersed camping area in the Bridger-Teton National Forest.
This boondocking location is adjacent from the Grand Teton National Park.
Its very easy to get in and out of for most RVs and cars so is a good fit for RV camping or tent camping.

Great campsite if others nearby are full. Arrived to where the coordinates are to find many cars parked camping in a little parking area, but if you keep going on the road there are 8 or so campsites down a 4WD dirt road. And the first campsite there was no one there and we arrived at around 11 PM.

The road in is Gravel and 2 to 30 miles from a paved road. Gros Ventre, Jackson Hole, Grand Teton NP is open June -Oct. There are 30 or more campsites at this location. You may stay 7 days, but Ck locally at Gros Ventre, Jackson Hole, Grand Teton NP.
There are some terrific, pure boondocking location back the Gros Ventre Road just east of Grand Teton Natl. Park. One of the most beautiful roads in all of Wyoming, which penetrates some 30 miles into the wilds! It is a destination unto itself! It is not a place to stay for day trips back to Grand Teton/Yellowstone Natâl Parks.

Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area is closed until further notice in conjunction with the search for Gabby Petito in the Bridger-Teton National Forest on the east perimeter of Grand Teton National Park.
The FBIâs Denver Field Office, in collaboration with its Wyoming Resident Agencies, the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, the Teton County Sheriffâs Office, and the Jackson Police Department, issued the closing notice at 7 p.m. tonight, Saturday.
Spread Creek is located in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, directly east of Grand Teton National Park on US Highway 89. It encompasses the Toppings Lake camping area and is a popular zone for visitors to the park who desire to camp in areas other than permitted campgrounds.
Additionally, the FBI requested assistance from anyone who was at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area between Aug. 27-30 and had contact with Gabby or her boyfriend Brian Laundrie, or who saw their car.
Individuals with information are requested to contact the FBI at tips.fbi.gov, 1-800-CALL-FBI, or 303-629-7171. Photographs and videos may be submitted to the FBIâs dedicated digital media tipline for this case: fbi.gov/petito.

Where Is Dispersed Camping Allowed In Montana
Dispersed campers in Montana will do best looking for campsites located on land controlled by two federal agencies: the United States Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management . Out of those two, the vast majority of camping opportunities occur within the states national forests.
The USFS generally permits dispersed camping anywhere in a national forest where it is not explicitly prohibited, or in too close of proximity to other recreational amenities such as developed campgrounds, trailheads, and parking areas. The same goes for the BLM, although it is often less clear if camping is permitted on BLM land when compared to national forests.

Located in Custer-Gallatin National Forest, the Shields River Dispersed Site has four campsites located along the banks of the Shields River. The site is about an hour north of Livingston, and is tucked away in a seldom visited segment of the West Crazy Mountains. There is a basic vault toilet here to service the campsites, but you wont find any other amenities.
The campsites are larger and well spread out along the river in a large loop. This makes it easy for RVs and larger trailers to navigate, and this is a great site for those camping with a larger rig.
In addition to great fishing in the river, there are also several excellent hikes in the region. Our favorite is the Sunlight Lake trail, which takes you to a stunning alpine lake at the base of Sunlight Peak.
Rock Creek Dispersed Camping

Rock Creek dispersed camping is located just north of the Wyoming border and situated along the stunning Beartooth Pass on the way to Red Lodge, MT. There is a long and winding forest service road that parallels Rock Creek and has access to tons of dispersed camping.
The majority of the sites here have river access, which makes it easy to filter water during your stay. Do keep in mind that there are no other facilities though, so youll need to pack out your waste when camping here.
If you follow Rock Creek Road all the way to its end youll reach the Glacier Lake trailhead, which features a wonderful hike up to Glacier Lake in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area. You also have easy access into Yellowstone National Park from here. Highly recommended!
There are also several developed campgrounds in this area, so if you are looking for more amenities than what dispersed camping offers youll have a few good options to choose from.
The Elk Lake dispersed camping area is located along, you guessed it, Elk Lake. Part of Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and just off the main road that leads to Red Rock Lake National Wildlife Refuge, this is a beautiful and secluded place to spend the night. As a bonus, the Elk Lake Resort is located adjacent to the dispersed camping area, so you may even be able to get a hot meal!

Finding Free Camping At The Grand Tetons
I arrived in Grand Teton National National Park on June 3, 2020, a Wednesday. I figured starting my search mid-week would be ideal in securing a boondocking site before the weekend rush hit. It didnt seem to make any difference.
To be clear, you cannot actually boondock inside Grand Teton National Park. You have to instead find it in Bridger-Teton National Forest. The Forest shares a border with the Park, so all you have to do is stay just inside the forest boundaries, and youre good. You still get amazing views, nonetheless.
I explored eight different boondocking areas in the Forest. All of these areas were documented on Campendium. All came with dozens of great reviews, beautiful photography, and camping memories to die for. I also explored a few forest roads not documented on Campendium, just to try my luck at finding something new.
Everywhere I went to was completely filled with campers.
I mean filled.
Some areas had motorhomes and trailers packed in tight like sardines. Their owners had all maneuvered them carefully and closely together to maximize their view of the Tetons. They all must have been friends in order to get their rigs fitted together like Tetris blocks. And what about those other forest roads not documented on Campendium? Yup, completely filled too. Even campsites with no view of the Tetons were taken.

Teton Canyon is open for motorized use in all alternatives. The trail going to Alaska Basin is closed to motorized use in all alternatives due to its wilderness location. Dispersed camping occurs along the Teton Canyon road and is permitted in this area. âUnless otherwise posted, motorized access is allowed for parking and dispersed camping within 300 feet of roads and trails which are open for motorized useâ
Tip: Caltopo Has A Lot Of Information To Load And Uses Color Coding For Some Overlays So Avoid Applying All Your Filters Simultaneously
Scouting for clearings off forest road 193 when finding dispersed camping sites near Mt. Taylor, NM.
Step 1: I first locate the trail head on Google Maps and get the directions from my home to the pin . This tells me which forest road off the main road it sends me, so I know which forest road to camp off.
Step 2: I then start scouting for clearings off the forest road, usually a bit set back from the road. I also look for spots about a mile away from the trail head, assuming its popularity will cause some traffic. We have a dog, so we want to stay clear of cars and neighbors. Once I find a good spot, I check the distance to the trail head, just to be sure were not too far or too close.

Step 3: I then copy the coordinates of my pin in Google Maps and plug them into the search field in CalTopo. The first overlay to apply is the Land Management , just to verify that we are on public land and wont go through any private land there. I zoom out to get an overview of our route. The area is marked in green and we are traveling on public roads there, so we are fine. .

Homestake Pass Dispersed Camping
Homestake Pass outside of Butte, MT crosses the Continental Divide and has some great dispersed camping right off of I-90. If you head north on Homestake Pass from I-90 past the picnic area it soon opens up to beautiful National Forest and several great dispersed campsites. The further back you head the more secluded the campsites get, but be prepared as the road does get quite a bit rougher.
For those in an RV, your best bet will be to stick to the sites closer to the highway.
This is dry camping, so you wont find any water sources and there are no restrooms available. This means you need to be prepared, and ensure you are practicing Leave No Trace principles when camping along Homestake Pass.
This is a great dispersed camping area for those passing through on a longer Montana road trip given how close it is to the interstate, but also makes a great option to spend a few nights and enjoy the surrounding wilderness.
Along Haymaker Road in Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest youll find the Haymaker Dispersed Camping Area. This designated dispersed site has a simple vault toilet and room for several camping set-ups along a quiet creek. Haymaker Canyon is a popular ATV route in the area, so this campsite is a popular staging ground for explorations further into the National Forest.
Although you are adjacent to a small creek here, we still recommend bringing your own water as it can be unreliable.
