Warriors’ Path State Park Honored For Innovation

02:24pm

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has honored Warriors Path State Park in Kingsport as its top park in the state for innovation, part of the 2021 Tennessee State Parks Awards of Excellence. The park received the honor at a recent park management conference at Pickwick Landing State Park.

Warriors Path State Park is most deserving of this recognition, Jim Bryson, deputy commissioner of TDEC, said. The creative work of the park staff, most notably in establishing a new campground, speaks to the efficiency, creativity, and dedication in providing a great experience for visitors, and we are pleased to present this award.

The park staff created and built the Cedar Ridge Hammock Campground after the closure of the parks primitive campground for new construction. The closure left the park with no ability to offer traditional camping opportunities, and it lacked space to provide a year-round area suitable for group camping, which was needed for area organizations.

The Cedar Ridge Hammock Campground contains four sites built in a once privet-covered area. Each site was constructed with recycled, reused, or repurposed materials. The entire space cost the park only the installation of a water hydrant. Volunteers and park staff all made contributions in the form of support, labor, and ideas.

Reduce Reuse Recreate: Sustainable Hammock Camping At Warriors Path State Park

What is a state park supposed to do with a pile of rusted grills and garbage cans, dozens of felled cedar logs, and several tons of mulched tree debris? Warriors Path State Park in Kingsport found the answer: build a sustainable, wasteless hammock campground in an underutilized, formerly privet-infested area.

With the expertise of Drew Lawson, a dedicated and creative volunteer, Warriors Path State Park will unveil Cedar Ridge Hammock Campground to the public in the spring of 2021. This new space will provide a sustainable hammock campground that is unique to Tennessee State Parks.

Hammock campgrounds are scarce commodities in the Southeast, and particularly in Tennessee. Even rarer, this campground is designed to be wasteless, and to provide a space for low-impact and fun activities for both individuals and groups.

The idea for the hammock space originated from a round table discussion about trends in camping held during a park leadership conference in 2018. Due to multiple ongoing projects, the hammock campground idea was shelved until May 2020 when Drew Lawson, the parks returning volunteer, Park Manager Sarah Leedy, and Park Ranger Jane Switzer held a meeting to discuss Drews summer projects and ideas to raise revenues and provide new services.

Future plans include seeding the area with native pollinators to match the pollinator field that now grows next to the park swimming pool. The park will also provide hands-on classes to teach new hammock campers the ropes.

Warriors has a great playground called Daryls Dream. It has a Narnia path around the perimeter an a Frisbee course. There are paddle boat rides, swimming pool, another playground on the hill above Daryls. A soccer field, golf course and restaurant open in the summer. A large campground has an amphitheater and a bathhouse/restrooms. The beautiful lake is the backdrop for it all.

My wife and I were looking for something to do in Kingsport while our dog was at the vet. We decided to go to Warriors’ Path State Park because they had horse back riding. The weather was great when we got there. I have never really ridden horses like my wife has so I was kind of nervous, but they do a great job pairing you with a horse that will be best for you. The price is not bad either. They have a 30 minute ride or a 45-55 minute ride. I believe the 30 minute ride is $17 a person, we did the 45-55 minute ride and it was $24 a person. We had so much fun. I would highly recommend it. We will be back.
