Campground And Rv Parks Around Monterey And Carmel

If you’re traveling a recreational vehicle and looking for a place to stay close to Monterey and Carmel, you may be surprised how few places you’ll find to do that. In fact, the Monterey Peninsula is woefully short of places to camp, and it gets worse if you’re looking for a place to camp in a tent.

You could spend a lot of time searching around for non-existent campgrounds and RV parks, but you don’t have to. This short list is the result of hours of online research.

Be In The Know About Bonfires

Notice to Visitors:

Effective September 16, 2014, California State Parks is banning beach fires on state beaches within the Monterey District to minimize any fire dangers. The state beaches affected by this order include Carmel River, Monastery and Monterey. State Park officials will begin issuing warnings immediately to first-time offenders. All illegal fires will immediately be put out and repeat offenders will be issued citations. For the purposes of cooking, a raised and self-contained gas camp stove may be used.

High fire danger and very little rain this summer, along with the continued degradation of our beaches due to charcoal and soot deposits from beach fires, requires us to rescind our order allowing beach fires. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, but we are taking these steps to ensure public safety and to protect Californias natural resources.

California State Parks officials are rescinding a Superintendents Posted Order that allows beach fires without restrictions at the three state beaches mentioned above, and will begin enforcing California Code of Regulations T14 4311 which states, “No person shall light, build, use or maintain a fire within any State Park Unit except in a camp stove or a fireplace provided, maintained, or designated by the Department for such purpose”.

Dispersed Camping In Monterey

California has some incredible natural areas from beautiful beaches to wildlife-filled forests. If you find joy in camping without bounds, then there are many options for dispersed or remote camping in Monterey.

Public land owned by The Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service can be camped on outside of a developed campsite.

Legally in Bureau of Land Management Areas you can camp for two weeks at a time within a 30 mile radius during a 28-day period. This is perfect for hikers who will move camp a few miles at a time.

The regulations are slightly different in California state forests. You may camp at one site for a maximum of 14 days, and you may stay in each district for up to 21 days before having to vacate.

Ranger stations will also offer in-depth information on dispersed camping sites in the Monterey area.

Weve outlined the rules around dispersed camping in California in a previous article, and explain the free camping sites you can use. You can read that

Steep Ravine Campground And Cabins

Beach Camping Monterey
  • Location: Near Stinson Beach, Marin County
  • Type: Drive-in tent camping or basic cabins

Yes, there are cabins at Steep Ravine, but this isnt a glamping experience. Just steps from the shore in Mount Tamalpais State Park, the 10 primitive structures have no running water, electricity, or en suite toilets. Youll need to bring your own sleeping bags, cooking supplies, and other essentials. There are, however, vault toilets, drinking water, and an old-fashioned, wood-burning stove in each cabin that you can use to warm it up .

Time your visit to coincide with a negative tide to soak in the hidden Steep Ravine Hot Springs right by your cabin. These geothermal vents on the beach at the base of the cliffs are only exposed during low tides. You can dig out your own little bathtub on the beach, or head to the hot springs grotto, maintained by locals. Word of warning: The grotto is clothing optional.

Tucked away just off the beach at the resort town of Two Harbors in Catalina Island sits the Two Harbors Campground. With views of the harbor and Pacific Ocean, its an idyllic beachside campground but also close enough to town and the ferry from San Pedro for easy accessibility, even on an island that prohibits visitors from driving cars. Although there is a small shop and restaurant in Two Harbors, its recommended that you bring the majority of your food in from the mainland.

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Parkcampground

Santa Cruz / Monterey Bay KOA

The campground in the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Parks is located an hour outside Monterey city but is lauded as one of the best camping sites in the entire area.

There are vaulted toilets, fire pits, and food storage lockers. The campsites dont have any water, but there are some water spigots and flushing toilets by the day-use area.

These sites are very popular and you may have to reserve a spot more than six months in advance. However what you get is a campground virtually all to yourself, in one of Californias most beautiful landscapes.
