Rocky Neck State Park East Lyme Connecticut
While this isnt a spot where you can camp right on the beach, Rocky Neck State Park is a popular park that offers an expanse of sandy beach, warm, shallow water for swimming, and a diverse trail system for hiking and looking for wildlife. The park includes 700 acres of diverse terrain, plus a ½-mile beach on the Long Island Sound.
The campground at Rocky Neck State Park is within walking distance of the beach and includes 160 campsites for tents and RVs. There are wooded and open sites, non of which have hookups. Dogs are not permitted, but its a fabulous spot for camping near the ocean with kids.

White Lake State Park
White Lake State Park in Tamworth, New Hampshire is the perfect lakefront setting for exploring the White Mountains. Quiet wooded campsites are set among a stand of pitch pines with views of the lake. Swim and canoe the lake and then head a short drive north to hike and sightsee in the mountains. You can also visit the towns of North Conway or Lincoln for dining and shopping.
Townshend State Park In Townshend Vt
Head to Vermont to Townshend State Park, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Its history is still clear, as not much has changed since the 30s. Tent camping and lean-tos are available, as well as restrooms and showers. The campground offers direct access to Bald Mountain, with trails winding past waterfalls and pools up to a beautiful view from the top.

White Lake State Park Nh
If you want to go camping in New Hampshire, why not head to White Mountain National Forest? One of the best spots for camping here is in White Lake State Park. While the park is most well known for being one of the best spots for swimming in the region, its also one of the best camping in New England spots!
The campgrounds are located right next to White Lake, a breathtaking lake made from glacial ice. There are walking trails around the lake, as well as a few other paths. This is the perfect place to stay for camping in the summer.
Salisbury Beach State Reservation Salisbury Ma
Best Camping Area | Nature lovers may swarm to the Merrimack River every summer, but setting up a tent on its banks here all but guarantees you wont feel cramped. With almost 500 sites, access to a 3.8-mile stretch of beach , and conveniences like RV hookups and renovated bathrooms, campers here come away feeling as if theyve spent their time communing with nature instead of just their neighbors. The campground doesnt sit right on the water, but its within walking distance of Salisbury Beach, a four-mile strand of dunes and white sand beach, with plenty of room to spread out.

Salisbury Beach State Reservation Salisbury Massachusetts
Salisbury Beach State Reservation boasts a huge campground with 484 sites that are perfect for tents and RVs. The beach itself extends 3.8 miles along the Atlantic Ocean, from the Merrimack River to the New Hampshire border.
Campsites have water and electric hookups with views of both the ocean and the Merrimack River. There are a few trees spread out among the sites, but for the most part, you can expect to be in full sun most of the day. While this isnt quite oceanfront camping, it comes very close!
As with other state camping facilities in Massachusetts, out-of-state residents will pay significantly more for a site. The cost is $22 for residents and $70 for out-of-staters.
Burlingame State Park Ri
Rhode Island is known for its size, for not actually being an island, for Narragansett beer, and for its miles of coastline. We think it should be known for camping, too.
Narragansett Bay is New Englands largest estuary, and makes for picture-worthy scenery and opportunities for water sports including surfing. Inland, there are plenty of lakes, rivers, and woods to welcome anyone with a love of nature. If you want to get in on what Rhode Island has to offer, its hard to beat Burlingame State Park.
Situated on Watchaug Pond, Burlingame State Park is still close to the ocean, as well as the excellent birding area at Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. The park is huge, too, with a whopping 700 rustic campsites and 20 cabins to choose from. The Dyrt Ranger Molly G. said of her experience, We loved how close this camp was to the beach and to Iggys . Dont forget your bug spray though in the on-season all those wetlands mean the mosquitos can get pretty fierce.

Salisbury Beach State Reservationsalisbury
2021 update: Tent and RV reservations are available through Reserve America. The common picnic area and grilling area remain closed.You want to camp at the beach, you say? This reservation has nearly 500 campsites in more than 500 acres along a 3.8-mile stretch of beach. If the beach itself isnt enough entertainment, Salisbury offers concerts, a playground, a boardwalk, a carousel, and an arcade. While its not shady and secluded like many campgrounds, it is right on the beach. Between April and mid-September, pets are welcome at the campground but not on the beach.

Daicey Pond Campground Cabins Baxter State Park Maine
Yes, its total wilderness, but the camping cabins at Daicey Pond Campground in Maine have propane lights! The Appalachian Trail runs right through the campground, and in the summer and fall, the cabins are usually filled with hikers hoping to make it the trails northern terminus, the famous Mount Katahdin.
Park roads arent plowed in the winter, and its a 6-mile ski/snowshoe/hike to the cabins. Campers can choose from cabins that sleep from two to six people. Firewood is provided. From the campground, youll have an amazing view of Mount Katahdin, if it isnt cloudy.
Once you settle in, you can get busy exploring the ski trails, looking for wildlife or even ice climbing. Winter conditions can be very harsh in Baxter State Park, so be sure to plan your trip carefully and pack all the essentials for winter camping.

Scenic Rural Campsite New Glampshire
Location: Sanbornton, New Hampshire

Nickerson Forest State Park Ma
If youre a mountain bike enthusiast, Nickerson Forest State Park is the way to go. Like many of the more popular New England state parks, Nickerson Forest is big, offering 400 campsites. Thats good, because it can get quite full during peak camping season. Its easy to navigate without a car, though, because its so bike-friendly.
The Dyrt Ranger Molly G. observed that the bike system in this campground is truly awesome and allows access to the whole park great place for a good ride! The Dyrt Ranger, Duane B., called it a biking mecca and says, This is a great park for mountain biking, there are trails everywhere. Check NEMBA website for a trail map. A third noted the destinations bike chops, too, writing It has lots of bike trails and hiking trails to go on. Is very close to cape attractions and beach.
Lest you think thats all Nickerson Forest has going on, however, dont overlook the trout fishing ponds or the proximity to Cape Cod. And dont forget to bring your #DyrtDogs to swim the National Seashore and your bike to ride the awesome Cape Cod Rail Trail.

New England is home to some amazing outdoor destinations, and the best thing about the region is everything is packed into a relatively small area. While these are by no means the only camping options in the region, they are some of the best options within close distances to some really worthwhile spots to visit. From Maine to southern Rhode Island, New England offers an awesome mix of mountains and coastal locations to camp. I think camping is less common in New England than other parts of the country where there are more national parks, but some of my best camping trips with friends have been in the area. New England is a perfect place to camp in the summer, with warm temperatures and longer, sunny days. Fall is also a great time to bustle up and pack up for a camping trip in these places, as long as youre prepared for the brisk nights . The sites listed here are all easily accessible with any car, and each offers a unique camping experience full of different activity options in the areas surrounding them.

If you have been to Connecticut, you might associate it with the Gilmore Girls, Yale, and New Yorks suburban bedroom communities than natural wonders. But theres a lot to more Connecticut. Take Hammonasset State Park, for example. This is the stuff of idyllic New England childhoods and memorable summer vacations with two miles of beachfront, hiking, saltwater fishing and even opportunities for scuba diving.
