Strained Resources Cant Manage Rule

The areas included in the Nevada BLM Closures comprise about 8,000 acres of BLM land. With just one ranger to patrol the area, the BLM cant keep up with ensuring that everyone is following the 14-day limit.

In addition to an increase of litter being left on public lands from the permanent encampments, abandoned vehicles are being left behind, too.

The BLM spends anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000 to remove abandoned vehicles from public lands, and that money comes straight out of taxpayers pockets.

Blm Land Closures Affect All Public Land Users

Any BLM land closures affect all public land users. These public lands are often located in popular areas, such as near a city, like the areas being closed in Nevada.

BLM lands are a great convenience for RVers traveling through an area, or for RVers unable to find RV camping or who just prefer the boondocking experience.

When these lands close down, it eliminates yet another swath of boondocking land for responsible RVers everywhere.

More and more RVers hit the road every year, and every year, more BLM land closes down.

Gray Rock Camping Area

Another good free camping option near Lake Tahoe is the Gray Rock Camping Area in Eldorado National Forest. Youll want to give the Ranger District a call to confirm the area is open since it was heavily impacted by the Caldor Fire, but if it is you can enjoy a great free campground. The campsites here are well spread out which gives it a dispersed feel while still being at a developed campground.

Gray Rock is about an hours drive from Lake Tahoe, but there is tons to do in the surrounding National Forest as well. The campground has basic restroom facilities, but no dedicated water source so youll want to bring all that youll need for your trip.

Just as with the Airport Flat Campground, there are tons of dispersed camping opportunities on the Forest Service Roads that lead to Gray Rock, so keep an eye out for smaller sites that we didnt want to include in this guide.

Restrooms: Vault toilets available at campgroundWater: NoMap

North of Lake Tahoe youll find the Sagehen Creek area which features a free USFS campground as well as tons of dispersed camping opportunities. Located in Tahoe National Forest, the free campground has 10 campsites that are dispersed throughout the forest. There are basic vault toilets here, but no water or trash service. Please be sure to pack out all of your waste!

The BLM is closing more public lands to camping again, and this time its happening near Reno, Nevada.

Large, permanent encampments set up on wide swaths of BLM land outside of Reno have prompted the local BLM agencies to indefinitely close these lands to camping as the rangers struggle to keep up.

Overstaying Stay Limits Negatively Impacts All Public Land Users

According to Ken Collum, Carson City BLM District Manager, People who want to use public lands are reluctant to go out where camps have been for a while, we are hitting the biggest areas that have the biggest impacts to public lands users.

Permanent encampments on public lands are often sprawling, leaving litter and human waste behind. These encampments are also associated with criminal activity, deterring other would-be campers passing through from spending the night.

When To Dispersed Camp At Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is definitely a summer camping destination. Winters here bring cold and snow, and while it might be possible to camp at a few destinations during the winter months we typically dont recommend it.

That means that, generally speaking, you should plan your trip for May September to get the best weather. It is often possible to camp in the shoulder season outside of this window, especially into October during many years, but that is highly depending on the weather and previous seasons snowfall.

You can expect crowds to be heaviest during July and August, which leads us to say that September is the overall best month for a Lake Tahoe dispersed camping trip. During the peak summer months youll have the best luck if you camp on a weekday or plan on arriving as early as you can for weekend trips.

How To Find Even More Free Camping In Nevada

Gold Dust West Casino & RV Park, NV

Remember that the 9 free campsites above are simply my personal favorites there are thousands of others to choose from in Nevada.

While the best way to find great free campsites is by exploring on your own , here are some additional tips to help you expand your search:

    • Online Maps Satellite view on Google Maps and especially Gaia GPS are very useful tools to find potential free campsites. Gaia even allows you to turn on BLM and USFS boundaries to ensure youre not on private land.
    • MVUM Maps Motor vehicle use maps are very detailed, regularly updated maps of the roads on USFS and BLM land, including back roads. Both online versions and paper versions are available. You can pick up print copies for a small fee at a local ranger station or order ahead of time from the United States Geological Survey store.
    • Ranger Station I personally always stop by the nearest ranger station before looking for a dispersed campsite. Here you can pick up MVUM maps as well as get the most up-to-date info on road conditions and even recommended campsites from the rangers.

Still cant find a good free campsite near you?

If youre not set on dispersed camping, I recommend looking into parking lot camping, casino camping, and even stealth camping as additional options.

Leave It Better Than You Found It

Never dump your tanks or leave trash behind while boondocking. If you arrive to a campsite that was trashed before you, clean it up! It may not be your trash, but it is all of our responsibilities to keep this land clean, as public lands users. Anytime the BLM has to clean up a site, theyre using taxpayer dollars and already-strained resources to do a job that they never should have had to.

While the everyday RVer or traveler may not be able to do anything about permanent encampments on public lands, we can definitely do our part to leave things better than we found them for the next camper and not contribute to the problem.
