Best Places To Go Camping In Oregon

Mt Hood + Clickitat River Area

Let’s Go Camping in Oregon
  • Kinnikinnick Campground Laurance Lake is nestled into the north side of Mount Hoods sprawling hills. Though theres no direct mountain view from any of the 20 campsites, proximity to Hood River ups its popularity.
  • Trillium Lake Campground Campsites are fairly difficult to reserve, and once you arrive youll understand why. With excellent mountain views and amenities for families, Trillium Lake asserts itself as one of the best campgrounds in the area.
  • Frog Lake Campground Though campsites offer immediate access to the lake, none are situated to have a view of Mount Hood. A clearing and epic views are a short walk away, though, and paddling is second-to-none at this high altitude lake.
  • Lost Lake Campground This large, spacious area is one of the oldest privately run campgrounds in Oregon. Cabins are available for rent if lakeside tenting isnt up your alley.

Mineral Camp Campgroundumpqua National Forest

Image from The Dyrt camper TJ B.

This tiny campground along Sharps Creek in Umpqua National Forest is open year-round and has three individual campsites surrounded by towering Douglas Firs. There are fire pits, picnic tables and vault toilets, but no drinking water or garbage disposal.

This is a very small remote campground past Dorena lake near Bohemia Mountain. If you can luck out, or go in the off season, this is a nice far out spot, off the beaten path to just relax by Sharps Creek. I liked how this place is small and more primitive than others, while still being a legit campground. The Dyrt camper TJ B.

Essential Oregon Coast Camping Gear

My husband and I are avid hikers and have continued my familys tradition of camping at the Oregon Coast during summer. Over the past five years weve finely honed our list of camping gear essentials. Heres our holy grail camping products.

Camping stove
  • This is the only camping stove we use. Were on our second one after the first one wore out after 4+ years of constant use. For a mere $45 its impossible to beat. For longer trips we use this camping stove.
Jetboil
  • Im guessing the uber-famous Jetboil needs no introduction, its an essential camping item for anyone that cant function without coffee . Weve been using ours for nine years and would probably buy one on the road if we left ours at home.

The 11 Best Places To Camp In Oregon

This is a HUGE campground. It is great if you are looking for a destination to rest and relax. There are miles and miles of hiking and biking trails. It is a bit of a walk to get to the beach, but its a huge beach and theres even a historic shipwreck you can check out. My kids liked seeing the historic military fort.

Personally, I loved all the blackberries along the trails. There is also a freshwater lake for swimming and tons of wildlife to see. Once you get there you wont want to leave, plus there isnt much close by, so come prepared to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Best Campgrounds Oregon #1: Sisters Creekside Campground

We almost moved to Sisters because I liked staying at this campground so much. What I liked so much about it was that you could walk to town for coffee, dinner, or to grab a beer and it was a nice jumping off point to exploring the Mackenzie River and Camp Sherman areas.

However, there are so many free and inexpensive camping areas in Camp Sherman and throughout the Willamette forest that are great to stay at if you dont need amenities. We often use the Sisters campground as a day to fill water, dump, and shower before or after spendng time in the Willamette wilderness area.

Joseph is a hidden gem of East Oregon that I didnt know existed until recently! Jospeh is the main jumping-off point for exploring the beautiful Wallowa mountain range.

There are many different campgrounds surrounding Wallowa Lake. Of the campgrounds nearby, Park at the River campground was our top pick. We loved the open meadows, spacious campsites, hot showers, and great views from the campground. From here, you can walk down to the State Park and play at the lake and youre only a 3 minute drive from a main trailhead to hike into the Wallowas. Here you can do a great hike to Ice Lake!

We also stayed at the State Park here and while its still nice too, we preferred Park at the River.

Tips For Camping In Oregon

  • Many of the campgrounds that are fun by the U.S Forest Service are pretty rustic, meaning the restrooms are likely to be pretty minimal, and the frills are few and far between. The incredible surrounds make up for this, though!
  • If you are on a tight budget, there are places in Oregon where you will be able to park up for free if you dont mind giving up some luxuries. Most of these spots are dotted across public land and are often run on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If you spend a lot of time in the national and state parks of the area, then it may be worth investing in n annual pass, as those daily fees certainly add up. An Interagency Annual Pass allows you into Oregon, Washington, and US sites operated by the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and US Fish and Wildlife Service. Another option to look into is the Oregon Pacific Coast Passport.
  • Some of the most unique camping options, such as tipis, yurts, and cabins are reserved up to 9 months before most summer weekends, so if this is what youre after, book well in advance! And aside from Booking.com, you can find them on Airbnb too!
  • If you are flexible enough to get out the door early, there are plenty of campgrounds that dont require a reservation, and youll have a high chance of snatching a first-come, first-served site. Especially if you are camping on a non-weekend and if you grab it and set up in the morning when everyone is leaving.
