Goal Zero Venture 7800mah Waterproof Power Bank

Best Camping Battery | Tailgating Battery Pack | Fathers Day Gift Ideas 2019
  • Output Wattage: 30 watts

If you are just looking for something small to complement an existing battery bank or to use for weekend camping getaways, you may only require the services of a smaller power bank like the Venture 30.

This is also compatible with some of Goal Zeros solar panels for recharging purposes.

It comes with a built-in USB plug so you dont need any additional cables to plug it into a solar panel or any other USB port to boost its charge.

It also has a built-in micro USB tip so you can charge electronics without additional cables.

It can actually charge two devices at once and includes an integrated flood charge to optimize your charging time.

On a full charge, you should be able to charge your smartphone two or three times and smaller tablets once.

Once its capacity is depleted, it needs four hours to recharge when plugged into a standard USB port and 9 hours to recharge if plugged into solar panels.

This rechargeable camping battery is also great for water-based camping trips because it is fully waterproof.

It boasts an IPx6 weatherproof rating and a durable body to protect it from the rigors of camping.

Best For More Power: Anker Powercore Ii 10000

When deciding which battery packs to test, I spent some time reading relevant threads in hiker forums and subreddits.

From that I learned the PowerCore II 10000 and the first-generation PowerCore 10000 are two of the most popular battery packs among ultralight backpackers.

It turns out the popularity is warranted. If you need more power this is the pack we recommend.

But its not just ideal for backpacking. Its also a great portable power source for camping trips.

On a recent weekend climbing and camping trip to Sand Rock, Alabama, five friends and I used this power pack exclusively to charge our phones and Bluetooth speakers. It had more than enough power to handle all the different devices.

Indeed, the PowerCore II has the greatest capacity of all the battery packs we tested according to our discharge test.

Here are the discharge test results of the three battery packs with a stated 10,000 mAh capacity:

  • Anker PowerCore II 10000: 6,518 mAh
  • Puridea S2 10000: 6,352 mAh
  • RAVPower 10000: 4,878 mAh

Using the PowerCore II 10000 to charge a Kindle at camp. This battery pack has enough juice that we like taking it on weekend car camping trips with friends.

Anker lists the pack at 6.9 oz, but when we weighed it ourselves it clocked in at 6.7 oz. Its low weight and high capacity make it the best option in terms of power per ounce .

Looking at specs alone can mislead you when it comes to the Jackery Bolt.

Heres what I mean:

The Bolt weighs 5.57 oz and has a capacity of 6000 mAh .

Aha So Whats Ah And What About Mah

The 9 Best Portable Battery Packs for Camping

Ah is short for amp-hour and refers to the storage capacity of the battery. The battery capacity of larger power packs is measured in amp-hours, but because smaller units have much less storage capacity they tend to be measured in milliamp hours, or mAh for short. 1000mAh is equal to 1Ah.

A battery with an 1800mAh capacity could deliver a current of 1800mAh for one hour. The higher the Ah or the mAh number, the more capacity the battery has.

Donât get too hung up on the numbers. As long as the power pack has enough power to charge what you want it to charge and has enough battery power to last your trip, youâre good to go.

When shopping for a power station, there are some important aspects to keep in mind. In the list below, I try not to get too nerdy.

Best Lightweight Battery For Camping: Anker Powercore 20100

Taking a weekend camping trip with a limited amount of gear? Youll want to make sure this lightweight Anker Powercore portable battery is in your equipment bag.

Its 20100mAh capacity is enough to charge most phones, tablets, and other mobile devices multiple times, while the dual USB ports and 24W output mean you can simultaneously charge two devices at somewhere close to full speed.

Safety features include protection against both power surges and short circuits, with an 18-month warranty for extra peace of mind. Speaking from personal experience, Ankers customer service reps are some of the more attentive that Ive dealt with.

A short micro-USB cable is included with the PowerCore, but if you want something longer, or need a cable with a USB C or Lightning plug on the end, youll have to provide your own.

Anker uses its own proprietary PowerIQ and VoltageBoost system for high-speed charging, rather than supporting the more widespread Qualcomm QuickCharge standard. Whether this matters will depend on the type of device you have and how quickly you need it to charge up, but the difference is pretty negligible for most people.

For a short getaway, the Anker PowerCore 20100 is the ideal way of keeping one or two devices powered up without adding much extra size, weight, or cost. If it doesnt perfectly satisfy your needs, however, Anker has a wide range of other options when it comes to capacity, ports, and charging speed.

Pros

Jackery Explorer 300 Portable Portable Power Supply Solar Generator

Goal Zero: The Best Portable Power Packs for Camping?
  • Output Wattage: 300 watts

Jackery has a pretty stellar reputation in the portable power supply world and I know several van lifers that swear by their Jackery setup.

The Explorer 300 is very similar to the Yeti 200X, but it has a slightly higher output wattage.

When Jackery Explorer 300 is fully charged it provide up to 20 to 25 cell phone charges, and 2 laptop charges before it needs to be plugged in. You can even run a mini-fridge for 4 hours or more.

It has a total of six ports for you to use: two 110-volt AC ports, one 60-watt PD USB-C port, a 12-volt cigarette lighter port, one USB-A port, and one quick-charge 3.0 port.

In terms of recharging the Explorer 300, you can use a wall outlet, car charger, or solar panel.

The fastest way to recharge is by plugging into a wall outlet and USB-C PD port at the same time.

But it will still recharge in about four hours if plugged into your carport.

While it is slightly heavier than the Yeti 200X, the two-pound difference really isnt enough to significantly impact the portability of this model.

Plus, it gives you that slightly higher wattage you might need to power some small electronics.
