Nestled between the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, this pet-friendly campground in Rodanthe comes closer to a resort experience than most OBX camping spots features include a year-round zero-entry pool, a dog park, and, most importantly, beach access. A fleet of bike, kayak, paddleboard, and golf cart rentals stand at the ready for island exploration. From the campground, its a short drive or bike ride to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, a protected bird habitat.
Wi-Fi-equipped lodging options range from grassy tent sites to cute elevated cabins that sleep up to eight, with full baths, kitchens, and cable TV.
Carolina Beach State Park
If you want to check out a section of North Carolinas coastline, Carolina Beach State Park is an excellent spot to camp. Although its relatively small at only 761 acres, every inch of this state park is packed with fun activities. Carolina Beach is a great option for anyone wanting to do a spot of fishing on their camping trip, as this state park includes a marina and fuel dock. The Fort Fisher State Recreation Area offers even more fishing opportunities nearby.
Amenities in Carolina Beach State Park include a bathhouse, a marina store, and a rental shop for paddleboards, kayaks, and bikes. A range of camping accommodation is offered at this state park, the family campground is located in a wooded area. This part is open to tents and RVs, where 10 out of 80 campsites offer full hookups. Camping cabins are also available, but the best tent camping in this NC state park is found at the secluded sites. More adventurous campers can head out to the more primitive camping spots for a night under the towering hardwoods.

Camp Hatteras Rv Resort & Campground Rodanthe
The Camp Hatteras RV Resort & Campground is unique in the Outer Banks because it offers camping on both the Atlantic Ocean and on Pamlico Sound. The resort is spread out over 50 acres and has 400 sites, consisting of a mix of RV, tent, and park model sites with concrete pads and all hookups.
The complex has three pools, a Jacuzzi, a miniature golf course, tennis courts, and a shuffleboard area. A central clubhouse is a great gathering spot for smaller groups, and a conference center is also available for larger gatherings. The campground is pet friendly, and furry friends have their own space to play in the new dog park.
The beach on the Atlantic side is wide and easily accessed via walkways over the sand dunes at the east end of the resort.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Cape Hatteras National Seashore along the Outer Banks stretches some 70 miles across barrier islands and offers more then 30,000 acres in which to enjoy the pristine maritime environment. Four campgrounds in the park are located at Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, Frisco and Ocracoke Island. The campsites on Ocracoke can be reserved the rest are first come, first served. Ocracoke is a favorite spot because of its 14 miles of pristine beaches, quaint village, lighthouse and maritime forest. The only way to reach the island is by ferry, but the journey is well worth the solitude youll find here.

Cape Point Campground Cape Hatteras Island At Buxton
If Frisco is full, Cape Point is a good backup. It also has the added benefit of being the cheapest national park campground along the Outer Banks. This campground has 202 sites and is spread out in a wide field of grass with limited privacy, however the grass and wide-open spaces are the perfect habitat for white-tailed deer, which are frequently seen here.
This is basic camping, and no reservations are accepted all sites are first come, first served. To access the beach, you will need to drive about a mile to a public parking spot and walk out to the ocean. Each site has a concrete parking pad, picnic table, and barbecue water taps and bathrooms are spread throughout the area. The towering Cape Hatteras lighthouse is easily spotted from the campground.

Campground: Camp Hatteras was a great base camp for us while we were touring the Outer Banks. It is in Rodanthe, which is on Hatteras Island and centrally located along the string of barrier islands. This means that you are about 40 minutes away from all the major shopping and attractions in Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, etc., to the north and about 30 minutes away from the southern areas like Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras. In addition to its ideal location it also has many great features as a campground. One of the unique attributes of Camp Hatteras is that it is the only campground in the OBX that owns both ocean and soundfront property. Its pretty cool that from one location you can get up early to watch sunrises over the ocean but then at the end of the day, head over to the sound side and watch the sun set.

Northern And Central Outer Banks Camping
While there are no campgrounds to speak of in the northern Outer Banks communities of Corolla, Duck or Southern Shores, visitors who want to explore the northern and central Outer Banks have plenty of options in Kitty Hawk.
The area is home to a half dozen privately run campgrounds which are located throughout the town. Campers have the option of staying on the borders of the Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve at two campsites which offer electrical and water hook-ups, as well as public bathrooms. These campgrounds offer both sandy and shaded sites for more privacy, and can accommodate trailers, small RVs and tents. On the oceanside, a small number of RV and trailer parks can be found along the Beach Road. With fantastic beach access and reasonable rates, even in the height of summer, these parks are ideal for RV owners who want to be close to the Atlantic Ocean, but also have easy access to gift shops, restaurants, and the central Outer Banks attractions.
Though the handful of campgrounds in the central Outer Banks may be tucked away off the main Highway 158 bypass, campers love the seclusionand can still enjoy proximity to the popular area attractions, including the Wright Brothers Memorial, the North Carolina Aquarium, and enough beach shops and restaurants to keep a camper occupied for a month.

Mainland Currituck And Dare County Camping
Campers who love the Outer Banks but who want to truly get out into the wild should head west, to the mainland portions of Dare and Currituck Counties. On the Dare County Mainland, small campgrounds allow campers to stay adjacent to the huge Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. This large stretch of land, which covers the majority of mainland Dare County, encompasses miles of forest, marshes, estuaries, and as a result, is one of the best spots on the Banks to check out the local wildlife. Just watch out for those alligators.
In Currituck County, campers can stay in a handful of campgrounds and RV parks that are located throughout the mainland towns, or they can stay waterfront, adjacent to the Coinjock Bay. Two campgrounds in this area, Bell’s Island Campground and Hampton Lodge Campground, are located on the tips of waterfront Currituck and offer exceptional views of both Coinjock Bay and the Currituck Sound. The campgrounds can accommodate tents, trailers or RVs, and offer varying amenities including bathrooms and showers, electric hook-ups, and even small waterfront playgrounds.
Hammocks Beach State Park
Anglers might want to set up camp on Bear Island in Hammocks Beach State Park near Swansboro. Open dunes awash with sea oats wait campers here, as well as waters chock full of fish.
